HAPPY FURSDAY!!

It's a crisp, sunny day here. Can't tell whose LB action is whose, but Hershey seems to be feeling great, romping and wrestling with Oreo.

So - remember yesterday how I called the new vet and had all of my questions answered, scheduled an appt for tomorrow morning and marked one thing off my to do list? Well...Doug called our current vet this morning to fax our records to the new vet. I guess they found our records, because I got a call from the new vet's office this morning saying that the vet had reviewed Hershey's records and his dental is more extensive than they are set up to do. She said there isn't a board dentist at NC State in the area and doesn't know when there will be one. They referred us to a specialist in Durham (maybe 25 min?). :YMSIGH: Can you say deflated?!?! Well, that means starting all over again...

Called Westside Animal Hospital in Durham. A very sweet sounding lady, named Priscilla, answered the phone and spent more than :30 with me, answering questions and explaining about their office and the dental procedure. It seems Dr. Hoover has been doing dentistry for 18 years and has people referred from as far away as Georgia. From the information Sienne posted, I have questions written down. Several she covered in her general explanation, so that was reassuring. They do general practice type work as well as dentistry and said we can use them or use the closer vet. His exam rate is comparable to our current vet and he lowered his vaccine prices when the economy tanked, for fear people would stop vaccinating. AND - he gives a price break if you bring multiple patients together (which we like to do). She was pleased to hear Hershey is on all wet food saying, 'The current school of thought is that wet food is best.' :o

So - current plan is to take Hershey and Oreo in for regular exam/vaccines. Bring Oreo home and leave Hershey for his procedure. I know it might be best to meet Dr. Hoover/get a feel for his office, then schedule the procedure. I also know that with the holidays coming up and almost every day on the calendar booked, the procedure might get pushed to the back burner and Hershey really end up in a world of hurt. Priscilla said to expect the dental to cost $1000 - $1200 ballpark. I told her I had questions about medications but presumed there were options. She said there are, so I'll hold those questions for the exam...or, maybe not since we're doing everything at the same appt! UGH - didn't think about that. Guess I'll write down all of my questions and call her back tomorrow...

oh - Priscilla asked Dr. Hoover about insulin - He said to give Hershey 1/2 meal and 1/2 dose insulin the morning of the procedure.

And, while I was tied up on the phone, Hershey decided to visit the 30's...

Hope y'all are having a great day -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

Re: 11/14 Hershey And, yet another vet...

I think a dental specialist is a great idea. I was always worried about Tess's dentals because or vet didn't do x-rays, now they do. :-D :-D

BTW, I'd have the old records faxed to yourself and run off an extra set to keep w/ your own records. I keep Tess's records from her old vet (complete notes for which they charged a "printing fee" of $10), all vet receipts (all procedures and medications are listed) and copies of all her test results.

Re: 11/14 Hershey And, yet another vet...

I will give the vet you first spoke to a good deal of credit for reviewing Hershey's records and referring you to someone with more experience/skill. That's a very responsible vet!

When you bring Hershey in, have things written down. They should ask you to sign a consent for the dental. Write on it in big letters: No Metacam and No Convenia. That way, it's in writing. I've also asked my vet to make sure it's on the front of Gabby's chart (just the same way an MD would note any drug allergy on the front of a paper chart).

Re: 11/14 Hershey And, yet another vet...

- Hey, Ann - The current vet faxed the records to the local (new) vet. Doug went by and picked them up to take to the newer vet. Priscilla (at newer vet) said she'd call the current vet to have the records faxed. Since now they don't need these, I'm going to keep them. I'm going to start doing a better job of keeping records. Another time I feel like kicking myself for not thinking of things...

- Hey, Rhiannon - Yes, ma'am. They do X-rays. So, YAY! for Hershey, but not so yay for the wallet. ;-)

- Hey, Sienne - I was disappointed that we couldn't use the local vet, but I agree, I think it speaks highly of them to not want to waste our money. I'm working on writing things down. I think I'll call them back in the next day or so and see if I can speak to the vet or email them my questions. Good idea about making sure it's written in the chart and on the consent form.

Re: 11/14 Hershey And, yet another vet...

Hi Libby,
I'm so glad that things seem to be working out for Hershey's dental with the new, new vet. When will the dental be? Sounds like soon. We'll be sending extra-special vines to Hershey.

Have a good evening getting all your questions together

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

- Hey, Ella - Good to see you. Sorry, I meant to include the dental date. The first available was 12/12. Hoping his Lev holds out until then. Otherwise, we'll have to schedule an exam separate from the procedure.

Guess Hershey got tired of all the  and headed back to the blues. As long as he doesn't forget the route back to  ! Thanks for coming over today!!

it sounds like you're in the right place now. I have to say, I think dental x-rays are a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it's good to know for sure you're taking care of everything, but a curse because they make the dental so darn expensive! Not just the cost of the x-ray, but the cost of all the additional problems they find that they never would have found before.

Well, this is Hershey we're talking about, right? I'd say the deep dive while you were distracted was pretty much a "given"... ;-)

Re: 11/14 Hershey AMPS(125)+6.67(34)PMPS(94)+2.33(124)

- Hey, Libby - I was glad I was sitting down when I heard the price. Sure, I have that kind of money just waiting for a way to spend it. But, hoping it helps him feel even better. Seriously thinking of getting insurance on Oreo before we take him in, though, so his dental would be covered...

- Hey, Carl - You're right. I guess it is Hershey being Hershey. So glad to hear from you. Praying each day is better than the one before.

**So good to see everyone today!!!!

Re: 11/14 Hershey AMPS(125)+6.67(34)PMPS(94)+2.33(124)

Hi Libby,

Good catch on that 34! :o

I agree with what others have already said, this new vet sounds more capable of handling Hershey' needs, great idea to do multiple cats & keep some costs down.

Re. your vet commute, we live in the boonies, & town is 25-30 minutes away. Our vets were always a minimum 35 minutes away until we began using Ann & Tess's vet - that's 25 minutes away & feels so close now!

Re: 11/14 Hershey AMPS(125)+6.67(34)PMPS(94)+2.33(124)

we took punkin to a veterinary dentist (specialist) for his last dental. it was expensive but i wasn't sorry. he had lots of things going on and it gave me a lot of anxiety-relief to know that she was equipped to handle things if he had a problem, with the anesthesia, for example.

you'll be so glad to have it done. :YMHUG:

Re: 11/14 Hershey AMPS(125)+6.67(34)PMPS(94)+2.33(124)

Whoa on that 34 :o - as if the dental drama isn't enough for the beans. nailbite_smile

Re: 11/14 Hershey AMPS(125)+6.67(34)PMPS(94)+2.33(124)

- Hey, Suzanne - Thanks. We don't exactly live in the boonies, but it seems we're either :30 or 1:30 from everything we need/want access to (except now DGS is 2:00). It's not a long drive and it's pretty easy to get to, I was just looking forward to FINALLY having something close. Oh, well, certainly not the worst thing.

- Hey, Julie - I know you're right; I'll be glad I went. But, as the one whose job it is to s-t-r-e-t-c-h every dollar, it sure is painful up front. Priscilla (at the newer office) was very reassuring and I do have a peace about it. I'll just be glad to have it done!

- Hey, Anne - Yeah, Hershey is all about the drama...or, maybe he's being kind and dropping to get my mind off of the upcoming dental. ;-)

:?: I read about possibly needing probiotics if Hershey is given antibiotics. Like what?

:?: Also, when feeding baby food, how much should I give? I'm figuring post-procedure I'll let him eat about like he feels like it initially.

oh, another :?: I'm thinking about buying a warming something for Hershey. Thought he might especially appreciate it post-procedure. I was hoping for one that self-warmed (needed no plug or batteries) something akin to the hunting seat Doug used to have (but I donated it to an outdoor kitty that had taken up at our house at the time). All I'm finding are ones with plugs. Anyhoo - is there one you'd recommend???

THANKS!!!!

Re: MORE Q: 11/14 Hershey AMPS(125)+6.67(34)PMPS(94)+6.67(68

Glad things are starting to shape up but what a journey!

Probiotics help keep the existing good gut bacteria from being affected by the antibiotic. I like Renew Ultimate Critical Care. I get it at GNC and give 1/3 capsule sid for Gracie because she's small but if Hershey is average or large! you might want to give it bid.

I'd get Beechnut baby food or something like that which has nothing but the meat ....no corn starch or vegetable broth, etc. I'd start by just giving him a tsp at a time ....you don't want to over feed after anesthesia. I don't think you have to limit overall how much of it he eats but I would go with frequent, very small amounts.

Heating pad....not sure on that.

Hope that helps some :-D

Re: MORE Q: 11/14 Hershey AMPS(125)+6.67(34)PMPS(94)+6.67(68

Good luck with the revised plan on the dental for Hershey. It's great to see him humming along in the greens again.

For "heating" pad, I used to get things called Purr Pads at Petsmart. They seem to reflect body heat back to keep the kitty warm. My old Buster (GA) was arthritic and loved the things. I used to stack them a couple deep for him. Current cats, not so much.

These dentals sure do know how to give us "sticker shock!" The more we know, the harder it is to continue with the old ways. Cleo had her dental at my regular vet. Vet said she didn't need any extractions, but, since they did not do xrays, I will never feel sure of that. But, I can tell her mouth feels better by the way she eats.

Good luck Libby, you are a great momma bean!

Most people will order FortiFlora for a probiotic. The ReNew that Marje mentionedis pretty concentrated. I would not start with more than 1/3 of a capsule twice a day. You can always increase if you need to.

If you are thinking about feeding just baby food for a day or so, I'd calculate the number of calories that Hershey typically eats and give the same number of calories of baby food.

I haven't seen any battery operated ones.
Shadow has a few different ones but this one is her favorite.

I've been trying to figure out where I stashed the heater pad for the kitty camper for your outdoor cat. ( I hadn't got back to you on that)
I gave away the camper part to our shelter because the outdoor cat I had was too big to get in and out.
like this http://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Heate...TF8&qid=1384530368&sr=8-1&keywords=cat+camperI just kept the heater part which is encased in hard plastic. I always kept a blanket or towel on it out in the garage so he had heat in the winter.
We don't have the cat anymore and my husband re-arranged the garage and I don't know where he stashed it. I'm still looking.
