HAPPY FURSDAY!!
It's a crisp, sunny day here. Can't tell whose LB action is whose, but Hershey seems to be feeling great, romping and wrestling with Oreo.
So - remember yesterday how I called the new vet and had all of my questions answered, scheduled an appt for tomorrow morning and marked one thing off my to do list? Well...Doug called our current vet this morning to fax our records to the new vet. I guess they found our records, because I got a call from the new vet's office this morning saying that the vet had reviewed Hershey's records and his dental is more extensive than they are set up to do. She said there isn't a board dentist at NC State in the area and doesn't know when there will be one. They referred us to a specialist in Durham (maybe 25 min?). :YMSIGH: Can you say deflated?!?! Well, that means starting all over again...
Called Westside Animal Hospital in Durham. A very sweet sounding lady, named Priscilla, answered the phone and spent more than :30 with me, answering questions and explaining about their office and the dental procedure. It seems Dr. Hoover has been doing dentistry for 18 years and has people referred from as far away as Georgia. From the information Sienne posted, I have questions written down. Several she covered in her general explanation, so that was reassuring. They do general practice type work as well as dentistry and said we can use them or use the closer vet. His exam rate is comparable to our current vet and he lowered his vaccine prices when the economy tanked, for fear people would stop vaccinating. AND - he gives a price break if you bring multiple patients together (which we like to do). She was pleased to hear Hershey is on all wet food saying, 'The current school of thought is that wet food is best.'
So - current plan is to take Hershey and Oreo in for regular exam/vaccines. Bring Oreo home and leave Hershey for his procedure. I know it might be best to meet Dr. Hoover/get a feel for his office, then schedule the procedure. I also know that with the holidays coming up and almost every day on the calendar booked, the procedure might get pushed to the back burner and Hershey really end up in a world of hurt. Priscilla said to expect the dental to cost $1000 - $1200 ballpark. I told her I had questions about medications but presumed there were options. She said there are, so I'll hold those questions for the exam...or, maybe not since we're doing everything at the same appt! UGH - didn't think about that. Guess I'll write down all of my questions and call her back tomorrow...
oh - Priscilla asked Dr. Hoover about insulin - He said to give Hershey 1/2 meal and 1/2 dose insulin the morning of the procedure.
And, while I was tied up on the phone, Hershey decided to visit the 30's...
Hope y'all are having a great day -
Libby (& Hershey, too!)
