Vtambo & Rex

Member Since 2017
Hi again. I have a couple more questions about food. Seems odd that with the hundreds of foods Dr. Lisa has on her chart that I somehow have been feeding the ones that are not on there... i guess I have always been kind of an oddball.... I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the phosphorus content in Young Again Dry, Nutro Natural Choice canned, or Wellness Core Shreds (pouches) or Wellness Trufood (pouches).

also has anyone had experience with feline kidney stones? Vet says Rex has kidney stones. His kidney numbers are up - so does that automatically indicate CKD or could it be from the kidney stones? or are kidney stones a result of CKD? Can kidney stones be treated with anything noninvasive? do they just go away?? so many questions.

another question I had been thinking about lately is that since Rex's BG numbers have been pretty good, many nights I do not give him a shot at all. typically his night time numbers are in the mid-100's. should I be skipping? or give shot anyway? he was originally on 1 unit 2x a day, then the vet upped it to 2 units 2x a day. given his current numbers (she went more on the fructosamine than on the numbers I provided her from home testing), now she is saying 2 units in AM and 1 unit at night. I usually only test a night because when I have done more often than 1x per day he gets really ornery. I figure that if he is stressing on the testing, it may affect the BG numbers. if I don't give him a shot in the PM, then I also figure that by AM he is probably going to be needing one anyway so not so important to test. I do do an occasional AM test just to see where it is at after 24 hours without a shot. opinions/suggestions on this would be appreciated as well.

Hopefully this is not too many questions or one post. Please let me know if so for future reference.

Check this out; it may have some of the info you are wanting (it's from 2012).

I have that list. I will have to make some time and take a closer look at it again in case I missed something. the Wellness pouches are only a few ingredients, broth and some shredded chicken. I think they may have come out after 2012. I know for sure the Shreds did because they JUST came out in the last few months. in fact, they are replacing the Trufood. unfortunately Rex likes the Trufood but does not like the Shreds as much. I have been able to order the Trufood still on Amazon, so have been getting it by the case when I need. hopefully will be available for a while. don't want to stock up with too much for fear of staleness and/or him changing his mind and deciding he doesn't like it anymore (kind of typical for him...) I will have to call the company and see if I can get anything from them. I am just kind of new at this phosphorus thing and I am not sure what to ask - percentage, mg, or ??? I just use the pouches as a supplement to get him to eat better, plus it is mostly liquid so I figure that is a really good way to get more fluids into him. I really don't want to have to give those up, but will if the phosphorus content is high. I would have to figure out something else then I guess. also wondering about the Orijen treats. those are crumbly so sometimes I crush them and put on top of his food to get him to eat. not sure what the phosphorus content is in those either. would just a little sprinkling on food make a big diff?

oooohhh, now here's one I have not seen. Fingers crossed that this has some info I am looking for. Thank you. :cat:

does your cat have some Maine Coon in him (or her)? I am pretty sure Rex does have some Maine Coon in him, although I know his mother was your typical tortoise shell, but Rex has the big fluffy tail, the hairy ears, the more squarish fuller face/jaw, etc. and he is pretty large.

I cannot know for sure whether she has any or not. She does not really have that 'look' to me (the long hair 'between the toes', the tuft of hair on the ears, etc.). I had an 18lb black male cat who everyone said definitely had some in him. Smartest cat I ever had.

Mosts cats with CKD do NOT have kidney stones.
Kidney stones tend to damage the kidneys with results in higher kidney values
If the stones are stuvite they acidifying the urine will tend to dissolve the stones. If another type of stone I do not thing there is a way of dissolving them.
Kidney stones can also cause blood in the urine

If you're watching Phosphorus levels, definitely take a closer look at Wellness. There was a thread about them changing formulas and the phosphorus level was increased. Many are trying to turn away. Have you seen this list for CKD / diabetic kitties? I think someone sorted it out from Dr. Pierson's food chart

I also hesitate on wellness canned because it has carrageenan in it. When Rex was eating wellness regularly he was vomiting frequently. When I switched him to nutro the vomiting stopped so thinking it may be from the carrageenan. I do like the broth pouches though. Nothing in them but meat, broth and water. I would definitely need to find a replacement since Rex loves the broth.

Will take a look at this list. Thank you for the link.

So that is interesting. The stones were an incidental finding via ultrasound when getting a urine sample. I had also noticed when doing dipstick testing the stick was indicating blood in urine. So if the stones are a certainty which could damage kidneys and stones are not common in ckd, would it still be treated as though it was ckd? I think when the test came back it said Ph was 5.5 which I believe is acidic. I will have to look though if that was blood or urine. How would apple cider vinegar affect urine? Acidifying or alkalize?

Thank you for this info. For some reason in my gut I have had this feeling that ckd may not be the correct diagnosis and this makes sense, but what do I do about it?

Just looked. Ph was urine.

I just looked at the wellness chart from Facebook and it seems like wellness is just better to be staying away from. The ones acceptable for phosphorus levels have either high sodium or ingredients like cranberries. I think there are better options.

thank you. very helpful. with the low phos food is the binder still recommended? do the numbers have to get to a certain point before using? I guess I still have a lot of research that I need to be doing....
