Meters

I tested both meters against each other this morning and this is what I got. See picture. That was this morning. She had less than 1/4 tsp pumpkin last night. She was eating better yesterday but not wanting to eat much this morning.

The Pettest is labelled as a pet meter. The TrueMetrix is a human blood glucose meter. In higher numbers, the pet meters tend to read a lot higher than the human meter. It's really not significant, as both results tell me "blood sugar is too high". The meters register a lot closer in lower numbers.

Are you giving insulin now? The spreadsheet shows "0" where the number of insulin units should go.

Should I be using the pet meter or the human meter? Also was going to put the libre on to get low readings while I’m at work. Is it likely that she will go hypo on a .25 dose ?

If you want to use the dosing methods we use here, it'd be best to use the human meters. Besides being much cheaper test strips, our dosing methods were written with human meters, back before pet meters were invented.

Note, the Libre often tends to read lower than a blood glucose meter in low numbers. We suggest double checking with a hand held for numbers under 100.

It's hard to guess what she will do on a 0.25 unit dose, but given how high her numbers are off of insulin, I suspect you'll be OK with 0.25 units. If she still is eating some dry food, we'd even be suggesting 1.0 unit as her starting dose.

Vey little dry food. I’m going to stick with the human meter. Pretty sure the pet meter is wrong. I have not decided what to do about the libre. It’s more for my peace of mind and less ear pokes which she is getting quite sick of. 🫤

Monsters test results came back positive for pancreatitis today.
I’m sorry to hear that. I hope they are giving her the treatment she needs.

I’m also very concerned you haven’t started insulin. With these high numbers, you are setting her up for glucose toxicity which means the dose, once you start, may certainly have to go higher to break through those high numbers. Plus, she is at risk for developing ketones and DKA.

If you’ve decided to go to a human meter now, please let me know and I’ll update the SS.

She’s really not getting treatment. I made up my mind that I am starting Sunday when I am home..I switched back to a human meter. I am very concerned about the second shot so I will need you to be by my side if I am getting lower numbers pre shot. She was at a steady 99 on Bexacat 15 mg if that helps. I am going to send you a pic of my hypo kit and you tell me if I have the right things. She been running at 243-273 on human meter. I am absolutely terrified of a hypo event.

I would add extra batteries for your meter and a second back up meter to the kit. You don't want to be caught with a dead battery or meter during a hypo.

Pancreatitis is painful and cats often don't want to eat. Which, with your cat's history of ketones, is not a good thing. The basic meds to treat are Cerenia, odansetron, appetite stimulant, pain meds, sometimes fluids. Ask your vet for these. Sometimes you have to be a bit pushy to get treatment for the cat.

You know I’m really struggling with time. Keytones were up from low to .02 today which is not bad. It happens periodically when she’s dehydrated. I am really trying to get everything prepared but is extremely hard with the massive daily care and having to run off to work 6 days a week to pay for all the daily care. Then I am running around before work trying to give hydracare, cerenia etc and up till 1:00 in the morning preparing for the next day. It’s exhausting.
