Hello everyone,

I know all of you have been sending vines Riley's way, so I thought I'd give you a quick update. I have been communicating with Marje on a regular basis because I was so worried about Riley's condition. He was so sick, as you know, I didn't think he would make it through the night. That was February 12, the day before my husband's birthday, and I thought what a horrible day it would be if we woke up and Riley was gone. Well he managed to make it through and on Monday I did as I was advised and picked up some cerenia and appetite stimulant from the vet. I gave Riley a pill and within an hour he looked better. I was on a schedule to get everything in him, as if I was in a race to stop the damage to Riley's kidneys. He was getting a full pill of cerenia, 30 minutes later 1/8 teaspoon of potassium in baby food, a half of a Zobaline, an hour later some wet cat food with phosphorus binder and an hour after that .75 ml of Nutrived. By the time I left for work he was starting to look sick again. I would repeat the same routine when I got home minus the cerenia. Again, after all was injected into my poor boy, he would be lethargic and sick with flat ears. Then Marje sent me some information about Nutrived having propylene glycol in it and also suggested that the iron could be making Riley sick. I talked to my vet and she suggested that I stop giving Riley the Nutrived. In the meantime it was suggested that because Riley was so ill I might want to schedule an ultrasound to look at his organs for possible cancer. So I do have one set up for Monday....however.
After one full day without the Nutrived, Riley is a different cat. He has been up all day, he's been outside, walking up on his toes, eating all of his food with the phosphorus binder in it, has eaten the baby food with the potassium in it, taken a half Zobaline, and I haven't given him a cerenia at all. His ears are perked up and his energy level is better than I've seen it in months. It is an unbelievable turnaround. He is bright eyed, alert, interested in everything. What do you make of it? If he continues to behave this way, I am thinking about canceling his ultrasound and having a blood panel done in a couple of weeks to see where I need to make adjustments in his medicines. Advice please and thanks to everyone again!

Cherie, this brings tears to my eyes:). I have been following ur condo and praying for Riley to strengthen so this is fabulous news :bighug::bighug:!!!!!..... so thrilled for him and you :bighug:. Good job to you both :cat::cat::cat:

Maybe the iron upset his tummy. Try plain b12 then. I use a caplet that I just open and sprinkle on the food.

I am so happy to hear there was a turnaround with Riley. It's amazing how getting the right balance of things can make a difference. You should definitely have a blood panel within a couple of weeks. When we started the potassium, the IM vet wanted to know within a couple of weeks, to make sure the dose wasn't too much.

I don't know how long it takes to book an ultrasound for you, but it might help you know if there is anything else you are dealing with. I have to book the civie's ultrasound quite a bit in advance, so I tend to go ahead with them rather than have to wait a while until the next opportunity.

Further update;

Riley's bg was 62 tonight so he is definitely in remission. He ate three shrimp with phosphorus binder in them. He walked across the yard, which is quite a ways, all by himself and for the very first time since he started getting neuropathy last October. This truly is a miracle. Normal pee and bowel movement. I cannot believe what I am seeing!!!!

It's so good to hear Riley is feeling better! :)

Getting blood work done in a couple weeks is good, but if I were in your shoes, I'd go ahead with the ultrasound. It's rare for a kitty to go into a spontaneous remission, but we have seen it happen. An ultrasound will go a long way in letting you know if there's anything else to be concerned about.

Just my thoughts...

Best.update.ever!

Did you get the b12 and SEB? I mailed it last Monday.
Yes I did and thank you so much! I have sent for the #5 capsules. Can you tell me how much slippery elm to put in the capsule or did you sprinkle it on the food? If so, how much? Thanks again so much and I apologize for not thanking you sooner.

What a great report on Riley!! So glad to hear he's doing better.

Here is a thread with discussion on Slippery Elm Bark. I haven't ever used it, but everything I've seen is that people mix it with water and give it as a liquid. My understanding is that it doesn't have a taste, so perhaps Riley will be ok with it.

Hi Cherie.

I am so delighted to read that Riley is doing so much better. I am not familiar with Nutrived, but it sure sounds as though that did not agree with him. Add me to the list of people that think it is a good idea to get both the blood work and the ultrasound. If there is anything else going on, it's better to find out sooner than later, and if there is nothing, what a load off your mind!

My cats didn't like the SEB slurry, so I put it in the #5 capsules. I believe I gave two capsules a day. Sasha didn't mind having it sprinkled on her food, so I did that with her. The others had to be pilled, even Cinco who usually ate anything.

Sending lots of healing vines to keep Riley doing better!

What great news AND turn around for Riley. I have used SEB and sprinkled it right into his food and he didn't seem to care that it was there at all.

That's great news! Sending continued vines to Riley to keep feeling much better.

I too recommend the ultrasound, and you need to get the blood work to make sure the potassium is going the right way. Best Of Luck on both.

@Cherie Hogan

You are NOT going to believe what I just found!! The capsules - lol. I was getting down an aluminum pan from the top shelf (where I was sure the capsules were and where I looked at least three times) and they were laying in the pan (I didn't look in the pan before). Soooo, if you do need them - they are size 4 and it is 1000 clear gelatin, just let me know.

this is good news....

i too think the u/s is a good idea.... if they find nothing... it gives you a baseline. But something was making him feel bad enough
for the nutrived to have been even started. Knowing things early gives you more time to intervene.
