Maggie _ Looking for Advice on Food

Hi everyone! ❤️

First of all, Maggie is doing great! 💚 She sends lots of hugs, purrs, and big kitty kisses to all her wonderful friends here. We are so incredibly grateful for everything you've done for us.

I have a question that isn't directly about diabetes, but I know there is so much knowledge and experience in this group that I'd really love to hear your thoughts. As many of you know, ever since Maggie was diagnosed with diabetes, she has become an extremely difficult eater. The only food she genuinely enjoys is dry kibble, which has unfortunately been mostly off the menu for many months because of her diabetes. At the beginning of our journey, I tried introducing 3–4 different wet foods, but she didn't tolerate any of them well. Every attempt ended with vomiting and diarrhea, and dealing with that on top of trying to regulate her diabetes was simply too much. Eventually, I gave up on wet food because I didn't want to keep upsetting her stomach while she was still on insulin. That's how we ended up with Ziwi Peak Air-Dried Venison. At the time, it seemed like the best solution because it was a complete food, very low in carbs (3%), and a novel protein. Unfortunately, we don't have access to any other complete air-dried or freeze-dried foods here in Greece. The truth is... she has never really liked Ziwi. I've tried everything I could think of, different toppers, probiotic pastes, and every trick I could find, but nothing really worked. For months now, the only way I can get her to eat it is by lightly moistening it with warm water and rubbing a few Royal Canin kibble crumbs over the pieces to make them smell more appealing. Even then, she'll eat it only from my hand (or my husband's hand). She won't touch it from a bowl, and she certainly won't eat it from an automatic feeder. I was willing to do all of this because I truly believed it was the best medical choice for her. But now that she's in remission, I don't think it's realistic, or fair to either of us, to continue hand-feeding almost every meal for the rest of her life. Because of her suspected food allergies (and possible IBD), I'm trying to keep her on novel proteins only while also keeping her carbohydrate intake as low as possible.

Recently, I've started wondering if I should give wet food another chance. I even tried Ziwi wet food, but it seems she simply doesn't like venison. So now I'm looking for another novel protein option. I've been looking at catz finefood PURE Kangaroo because, at least to my eyes, the ingredient list looks ok:
• Kangaroo 70%, Kangaroo broth 28.8%, Minerals 1%, Evening primrose oil 0.2%. There are no grains, potatoes, tapioca, peas, or other obvious starch sources. However, I'm confused by the nutritional analysis.

The label lists the following analytical constituents:

• Crude protein: 11.5%
• Crude fat: 3.5%
• Crude ash: 2.6%
• Crude fiber: 0.4%
• Moisture: 79%
• Nitrogen-Free Extract (NfE): 3%

Based on these values, the calculator I normally use estimates that about 13% of the calories come from carbs. At the same time, I've found other sources claiming that only 3–6% of the calories come from carbohydrates. Does the calculated NfE overestimate the actual carbohydrate content in a food that's almost entirely meat, or should I rely on the calculated percentage of calories from carbs?

I also have one more question. I'm still feeding Maggie exactly the way I did while she was on insulin, about eight small meals over 24 hours. Since she refuses to eat from an automatic feeder, almost every meal depends on me, and honestly, it has become physically and emotionally exhausting. I still set an alarm during the night to feed her, I'm up every morning at 6:00 a.m. for her first meal, and my husband and I even leave work early on alternating days just to go home and give her one extra meal. It's becoming incredibly difficult to sustain. I know that frequent small meals are generally recommended, but given our situation, would it be reasonable to encourage her to become a grazer again, as she was for her entire life before diabetes, by leaving food available throughout the day? My biggest concern is that, at least initially while she's is still eating Ziwi, I know she probably won't even approach the bowl. The only way I can imagine her eventually accepting food left out for her is if she gets hungry enough to finally give it a try. But I'm worried that letting her get that hungry might somehow jeopardize her remission or put unnecessary stress on her body.

Has anyone been through something similar? How would you handle this situation? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry for such a long post, but I wanted to give you the full picture so you could better guide us and help us make the best decisions for Maggie. ❤️

Thank you all so much. Your advice has already changed our lives once, and I truly value your opinions. ❤️🐾

I'm so glad to hear Maggie is doing great! I hope she's not missing her ear pokes too much 🤣

Would you want to try a bunch of nutritionally complete freeze dried options and see if Maggie will accept any of them, even if it's not readily available in Greece? I'd be happy to send you whatever is available from the US - I'm very serious so let me know if that's something you might be interested in. So far, my cats have liked Feline Natural and Weruva much better than Ziwi, though admittedly none of them like it as much as real kibble.

Does Maggie like broth? The other thing that I've been trying to do with mixed success is - my two civvie cats who are kibble addicts really like chicken broth, so I've been dropping in a little more of the wet food into chicken broth every day hoping they'll accept it in time... it's slow going but I'm hoping we'll get there.

The calculators you use based on the Guaranteed Analysis are usually inaccurate. In order to accurately determine the % calories from carbs, you need the “as-feds”, “dry matter basis”, or some companies call it the “typical nutrient analysis” but it’s the actual values they get from testing the food. I’m not sure if the values provided are the analytical ones….it almost seems they are because I looked at their website.

Let me look into this and I’ll respond soon. Have you tried Ziwi Lamb? It’s novel and my babies love lamb.

Hellen....it looks like you use the same calculator as I do so if those are true nutritional analysis numbers and not GAs, then you are correct it’s 13% calories from carbs. That’s probably a little high for a cat in remission. Ideally, something less than 6% would be best but there is the old adage of “feed a cat what it will eat”. I’d stop short of dry food on that, though.

To answer your other question, no, you don’t need to keep feeding her all those minimeals. Is it possible to get in four feedings a day? That’s what I do with my kitty even though she’s never been diabetic. She eats every five hours but you can tailor Maggie’s meals to your schedule, if possible. All those minimeals you were giving her were to work with the insulin but since you aren’t giving insulin (anti-jinx), then she doesn’t need all those meals.

You can also leave food out for her to graze (no dry food) as well. That’s totally fine if she will eat it. Since I feed balanced, homemade raw, I can’t ever leave food out but as long as hers doesn’t get dried out, you can let her graze. It’s probably not an issue with the freeze-dried but I don’t know about canned. Where we live, canned food would get dried out and gross. I usually always left some out for Tobey overnight because he had CKD and it kept the acid at bay. If we put it out at midnight, if he didn’t eat every morsel, it was super dry by 5 am.

What foods do you have available to you there? I know how difficult it is to have a picky eater; not fun. Gracie would only eat certain types and just specific lot numbers of those so we would have to go all over town looking just for a specific lot number.

Wait specific lot numbers???? Omg they should have hired Gracie as a professional taste tester with that kind of palate. If she were a human, she could have been one of those sommeliers that could detect the slightest change in the note of a wine or something.

Hi Hellen, wishing you lots of luck with this new situation, and so glad Maggie is doing great!
Sounds like 4 meals a day will work to accomplish your goals. I hope Marje's suggestions will do the trick!

Sending lots of kisses and belly rubs for Maggie :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

Lordy don’t I know. It was crazy. And, of course, it wasn’t just one flavor or one kind because we had several LCs and several MCs. But anything for our little Gangsta’ Princess.❤️❤️❤️

When Pookey was on insulin I was feeding him 12 times a day. Agreed about it becoming too much. Every hour I was micromanaging and watching the feeder. I think he got tired of it too. For the first year of remission I continued on that schedule. Now for the last 4 months, I’ve been doing 8 meals a day. It’s worked out a lot better honestly and I think if he ever went back on insulin I would keep it how it is today. Marje has me thinking though maybe I could condense it even further…

Yes, lot numbers. Sometimes one lot number is "yucky" but another lot number is yummy. Don't ask me how I know 🤪

Connie... ❤️ You are such an incredibly kind and thoughtful person. Your message truly touched my heart. Thank you so, so much for offering to help us.

The hardest part is that I don't really want to introduce Maggie to a food that isn't available in Greece. I'm already under enough stress every month trying to make sure I can find her Ziwi. It isn't sold here either, so I have to order it from other European countries, and every month it turns into a stressful search, hoping I'll be able to find enough before we run out. That's why I'm trying to find something that I can get a little more easily, a solution that's sustainable in the long run.

But thank you from the bottom of my heart for such a generous offer. Just knowing that you were willing to do that for us means more than I can ever express. It honestly feels like you've already helped us simply by offering. Maggie and I are sending you the biggest hug and thanking you with all our hearts. ❤️

I think my little girl has become incredibly picky with her food. I actually tried the broth trick before (using lamb broth, since because of her allergies she can only eat novel proteins), but she wouldn't even sniff it! :banghead::banghead::banghead:

And I'm so, so happy for you and Moonie. You're both doing such a wonderful job with the new dose! I honestly think about you every single day and always wonder how you're doing. I'm sending all my positive thoughts and energy your way and cheering for you with all my heart. I truly believe you're going to do really well.. You both deserve it so much. 💚🐾

My dearest Marje, ❤️

I'm so sorry for my late reply. Yesterday I got a call from our animal rescue group about an injured dog that had been hit on a major road near where I live, so I rushed out of the house. Three other volunteers and I searched for him for hours, and when we finally found him, we realized he had a serious head injury and a broken leg. Needless to say, we ended up spending the evening at the emergency veterinary clinic. Thankfully, I think he's going to make it. He'll need to stay hospitalized for a few days, and after that he'll go into foster care until he's fully recovered. So I think everything is going to be okay. ❤️

Now, back to Maggie...You confirmed exactly what I had been thinking about the kangaroo food, so I've crossed it off my list. There's no way I'm willing to take any chances, so I'll keep looking for a wet food that's under 6% carbs. 💚

The options here range from very limited to practically nonexistent, but I'm not giving up. I'll keep searching the larger European websites that ship to Greece, and I'm hoping that sooner or later I'll find something suitable. Unfortunately, there really aren't any good options here in Athens, and when you combine that with Maggie being unbelievably picky, it sometimes feels like an impossible mission. But I'm not giving up. I'll keep searching, I truly believe I'll find the right food eventually! 💚

As for the feeding schedule... once again, you've saved my life!!:p:p:p Being able to feed her only four times a day is such a huge relief! Spacing her meals about every five hours fits my schedule fine. You've probably just saved me a lot of stress... and maybe even my job! 😎:p:) And the fact that I can also leave food out for her to graze if she'll eat it means you've already given me two wonderful options. I'll try both and see what works best for Her Majesty. For now, I'll keep hand-feeding her Ziwi until I can find a wet food that she actually likes and that also meets all the nutritional requirements. If I manage to find one, then I can simply use the automatic feeder without worrying about the food drying out. We already have three automatic feeders for Her Majesty, and one of them is the Petlibro Polar with the built-in cooling system, so wet food will stay perfectly fresh!

Honestly... I think Gracie and Maggie must be related somehow! 😂When I hand-feed Maggie, piece by piece, she'll happily eat one piece of Ziwi and then completely reject the very next piece, even though it's from the exact same bag. She'll dramatically turn her head away as if she's saying, "Please get that disgusting thing out of my face!" Then, if I walk away for two or three minutes and come back with that exact same piece, she'll eat it as if it's the most delicious thing she's ever tasted.:banghead:🤣🙏:banghead:
Cats... 😎🐈‍⬛

Thank you so much Staci!❤️ I really hope so too....
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that one of Marje's suggestions will be the solution we've been looking for.

Please give Ivy lots of kisses and cuddles from both Maggie and me! 💚🐾🫂

Hi Tim,
I completely understand what you mean. At some point it feels like your whole day revolves around food, feeders, and constantly watching the clock. I think Maggie was getting tired of it too.. I'm really happy to hear that 8 meals a day has been working so well for Pookey. It's so reassuring to hear from someone who's already been through remission.

Marje has definitely made my life so much easier! I never imagined I could reduce Maggie's meals to just four a day. It honestly feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I'm hoping she'll be just as happy with the new routine as I will be! 😂😂

Maybe you could even think about reducing Pookey's meals a little more too, if it would make your life easier and still work well for both of you. It might be worth trying! 🙏

And I hope beautiful Maggie will decide to give wet food a try!

Well... I think God finally took pity on me after watching me spend the entire day searching for a suitable novel protein food! 😂 I think I may have finally found the one!
Venandi Animal Horse (Mono Protein) www.venandi-animal.de/pferd-als-monoprotein/33014

Ingredients:
  • Horse meat, liver, lungs, heart and stomach (67%)
  • Horse broth (32%)
  • Minerals (0.5%)
  • Eggshell powder (0.5%)
Guaranteed Analysis (as fed):
  • Crude Protein: 10%
  • Crude Fat: 7%
  • Crude Ash: 2.3%
  • Crude Fiber: 0.4%
  • Moisture: 79%
  • Calcium: 0.24%
  • Phosphorus: 0.22%
  • Potassium: 0.20%
  • Sodium: 0.25%
According to my calculator, it comes out to about 4.6% of calories from carbs, so it seems to meet the recommendation of keeping carbs below 6%. I went ahead and ordered it, and it should arrive in about a week.🤞I'm really hoping this will finally be the one! Now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that Maggie likes it... and, just as importantly, that her sensitive little tummy tolerates it well. 💚🐾

@hellen_maggie

For both of you….as you change their feeding schedule…..take a few days to do a little testing and see how they adjust. Ideally, their BG should come down a bit a few hours after eating.

I’m so happy you found something and I hope your little “angel” loves it. I feel it is somewhat inherent in cats that they can be picky. I think k they fall into two categories:
—-live to eat. (Gracie and Livia
—eat to live (Maggie and Tobey)

The world of cat feeding according to Marje 😂😂😂😂😂

Hahaha... do you think we could switch categories somehow? 😂 I'd love it if Maggie decided she wanted to "live to eat" instead! It would certainly make my life a whole lot easier! 🤣❤️
I really hope we don't get any surprises with her new feeding schedule! 🤞😂 But yes, of course, I'll do a little extra testing over the next few days to make sure she's adjusting well. Better safe than sorry! ❤️
