I just got back from the Vet. I gave her an edited copy of my SS. I left the obvious dose changes alone, for example, PS's around 200 and when we were out of town and I increased .5 for about a week. She was obviously going to have a problem no matter what was on that SS.

She said that the reason the numbers are all over the place on the SS is because I changed the dose. I told her I wasn't going to shoot 1u on a 200 PS when 1u on a 300 something PS sent him into greens. Anyway, I only ever lowered at the most .2 units. She said if I got a PS around 200 to NOT give insulin at all. I told her if I didn't give him insulin, he'd be back up in the 400's and maybe 500's. I pointed out that I waited and gave a reduced dose when he was in the blues at his AMPS for 2 days in a row so obviously 1u was too much so it had to be adjusted. She said that if 1u was too much, then he didn't need insulin. Can you believe she said that???? Like 1u is the end of dosing. I'm scared of having a vet like that taking care of him. What if I have to take him in for a diabetic emergency? I don't think I could trust her to treat my diabetic cat. The vet tech offered to give me a sample of Science Diet dental treats. That's like offering a human diabetic candy! WTH?

I can't trust her to help me with dosing and I can't trust her to say, okay, looks like ProZinc isn't working, lets try something else...if we needed to! She wanted to do a fructosamine test to get an average. I stood up for myself and said, I don't think that would be necessary given the careful monitoring I've been doing. She basically told me not to look at the #'s in between the PS's. I just needed to worry about the PS #'s. That's kind of damn dangerous for my cat and I don't agree. She said that my 200+ nadirs were just fine for regulation. I told her, I'm looking for remission, how can I achieve that when we never reach non diabetic #s?? She didn't have an answer, she just suggested the fructosamine test.

After this dental, I'll be finding a new vet who's a little more knowledgeable in FD. This vet had a diabetic dog so she thinks she knows how to treat diabetic cats because, obviously it has to be the same protocol, right? ugh. I'm afraid to even have her check his glucose because of the way she dug the lancet in sideways and back and forth in his darn ear. My poor cat! He was bleeding like a stuck pig.

I just ended up nodding and saying, okay, see you on the 12th for his dental and thinking to myself, hope you don't hurt my cat.

Sounds like you need to go vet shopping. I was lucky that my vet would still sell me insulin while I took the dosing into my own hands. Before the dental you should ask (if you haven't already done so) for a break down of exactly what they will be doing and what drugs (anesthesia) they will be giving. There is a thread somewhere on health about the recommended drugs/procedure a vet should be doing for dentals now-a-days.

Yikes! I hope you can do better with the vet with the diabetic dog. Those sort of comments are nothing short of scary!

I would have then asked, "then why are there lines between the 0 and the 1 on the insulin syringes?"
I was hoping you'd be able to get through to her. Not only will you now need to find a new vet, but I also feel bad for any future patients of hers whose owners don't have the initiative to do an internet search for "diabetes in cats".

You may want to post another thread asking if anyone knows of a good vet in your area.

Glad you stuck to your guns!

I believe it is Sue who is in the Springs, she recommended her Vet, might have to talk to her. I thought this one was going to be okay until the phone conversation yesterday and the visit today.

I actually kind of laughed when she said not to give insulin at all if he was 200 or below. Not even wait 30 mins and retest, just nothing at all. That's when I figured I should just quit talking and get the visit over with, go home and do what I feel is best. I didn't even mention that I'm converting U40 to U100...she would have had a heart attack! The syringes she gave me were U40, 1cc....so no in between lines, just 1u increments. Heaven forbid you dose in increments! LOL

The estimate she gave me for the dental has a spot for Buprenorphine Hydrochloride for pain but there is no quantity listed and no amount. Under that is the Pain control package for Feline to take home which is Buprenorphine .3mg. I'm guessing they give no pain control in the IV during the procedure or it would have been included in the estimate. He's going to need possibly 3 extractions. I'll post over in Health about the dental later tonight when I have a chance and ask about it. I checked out that link about dentals and have some questions!

I am so sorry about the vet...just keep on searching..
We are on our 4th so it can take awhile,,,I would try interviewing them first..see what
happens there..
Good Luck!

A lot of it (unfortunately) is kind of standard vet thinking I think. Not very up-to-date IMO, but if they don't deal with diabetes a huge amount, it's not too surprising.

Good for you for getting through it without throwing anything angry(2)_cat .

If you don't feel good about her and don't trust her, I would find another vet to do the dental. Just makes more sense to me, than to be worried that she will hurt him, or not do a good job. I'm not saying there's any need to worry, I have no idea, just saying if you already are "over her" lol, I would go ahead and find someone new if you are up to it.
