I just got back from the Vet. I gave her an edited copy of my SS. I left the obvious dose changes alone, for example, PS's around 200 and when we were out of town and I increased .5 for about a week. She was obviously going to have a problem no matter what was on that SS.
She said that the reason the numbers are all over the place on the SS is because I changed the dose. I told her I wasn't going to shoot 1u on a 200 PS when 1u on a 300 something PS sent him into greens. Anyway, I only ever lowered at the most .2 units. She said if I got a PS around 200 to NOT give insulin at all. I told her if I didn't give him insulin, he'd be back up in the 400's and maybe 500's. I pointed out that I waited and gave a reduced dose when he was in the blues at his AMPS for 2 days in a row so obviously 1u was too much so it had to be adjusted. She said that if 1u was too much, then he didn't need insulin. Can you believe she said that???? Like 1u is the end of dosing. I'm scared of having a vet like that taking care of him. What if I have to take him in for a diabetic emergency? I don't think I could trust her to treat my diabetic cat. The vet tech offered to give me a sample of Science Diet dental treats. That's like offering a human diabetic candy! WTH?
I can't trust her to help me with dosing and I can't trust her to say, okay, looks like ProZinc isn't working, lets try something else...if we needed to! She wanted to do a fructosamine test to get an average. I stood up for myself and said, I don't think that would be necessary given the careful monitoring I've been doing. She basically told me not to look at the #'s in between the PS's. I just needed to worry about the PS #'s. That's kind of damn dangerous for my cat and I don't agree. She said that my 200+ nadirs were just fine for regulation. I told her, I'm looking for remission, how can I achieve that when we never reach non diabetic #s?? She didn't have an answer, she just suggested the fructosamine test.
After this dental, I'll be finding a new vet who's a little more knowledgeable in FD. This vet had a diabetic dog so she thinks she knows how to treat diabetic cats because, obviously it has to be the same protocol, right? ugh. I'm afraid to even have her check his glucose because of the way she dug the lancet in sideways and back and forth in his darn ear. My poor cat! He was bleeding like a stuck pig.
I just ended up nodding and saying, okay, see you on the 12th for his dental and thinking to myself, hope you don't hurt my cat.
