Many of you know Linda and her Bear Man (GA). After Bear Man crossed the Bridge, his littermate, Teddy crossed only to be followed by Miss Emily. Pinkerton has been with LInda for quite some time, as well. Linda posted the following on Facebook today:

Vines are needed for my study buddy, Pinkerton. Some time early this morning after we got up, he somehow injured himself. I was getting ready for school when I heard him wailing in his little bed. It soon became clear that he could not walk. He only has one hind leg, and was unable to bear weight on it. I took him to an ER, where an X-ray revealed that the head of his femur was shattered. He has been taken to a referral clinic and seen by an orthopedic surgeon, who feels that the fracture can be repaired, but that because of his situation (only one leg, moderate arthritis in his hip), he is at high risk of complications from the surgery and his recovery may be difficult. I hope to speak to the surgeon today (just finished speaking with an ER vet), and surgery might be performed as early as tonight or tomorrow. Please send healing thoughts - he is going to need them.

She updated her post this afternoon:
Afternoon update on Pinkerton: they will do the surgery on Tuesday morning. They will take biopsies of the bone to see if there is anything there that caused the bone to splinter with no large force, but they will take a week to come back. They will go ahead and stabilize the break with plates and pins, in the hope that the bone can heal normally. He is not a happy camper at the vet, so they hope to send him home Wednesday. He will be on an e-collar for two weeks, and crate restriction for two months. Thanks so much to everyone for the vines and prayers. This morning it looked like I was going to lose him, so things have brightened up since then.

Please send Pinkerton whatever support you can. Linda could probably use some support (and chocolate) too.

Keeping you and Pinkerton in our thoughts and Prayers. Wishing Pinkerton the very best today and a fast recovery.

Re: Linda's Pinkerton needs vines

Thank you to everyone for the healing vines. Here is today's update:

He had his surgery today. He has an intramedullary pin and 13 screws. Before surgery he received X-rays of his abdomen and lungs. because the fracture occurred for no apparent reason, they are are suspicious of bone cancer, and did X-rays to check for any evidence of cancer spread. The lungs were clear, however they detected stones in his gall bladder, which will have to be monitored. Surgery went well, and he is recovering as well as can be expected at this point. He is pretty out of it on a constant IV infusion of pain meds. They will try to wean him down to a less potent IV pain med. They will offer him food tonight. He has not yet been able to stand. The vet asked about giving at least one dose of Metacam to help with his pain. I agreed, as his urine is very well concentrated (1.040), even after constant IV fluids. Biopsies were taken of the bone, and will be sent out to rule out anything like cancer going on in the bone. If he does well, they may consider sending him home tomorrow, however he has to be weaned down on his pain meds first. He won't necessarily be able to stand before being discharged. He is doing well at this point, just about 8 hours after surgery.

Everything looks pretty good at this point - there was no evidence of cancer in his lungs, and no complications during the surgery. He is comfortable on his pain meds. I will check on him tomorrow morning. It sounds like he will need a lot of care when he comes home, especially if he is not able to get in and out of the litter box himself. Please keep the good thoughts coming his way!

Re: Linda's Pinkerton needs vines

Thank you for taking the time to update. I'm so relieved that the surgery went well and there was no evidence of anything ominous. The vines, etc. are coming your way. If it snows in Chicago, I'm happy to send snowflakes as well.

Re: Linda's Pinkerton needs vines

that sounds very encouraging, Linda. As long as he can pull through the next 24 hours and get home, I bet he will learn to get around much more quickly than you expect. I hope he'll be able to walk soon. In the meantime, there is nobody better to take care of him than you.

Re: Linda's Pinkerton needs vines

Plenty of snowflakes here to send!
Hi Linda, The report is encouraging and we hope that Pinky will have a good night and that the cancer- test results will come back negative.
Thinking of you both and sending lots of vines and tons of snowflakes,

Try to get some good sleep yourself tonight, OK?

Re: Linda's Pinkerton needs vines - 1/22 update

Early Wednesday morning 6 a.m. Pinkerton update. I spoke to the vet tech. Pinky is resting comfortably and had a good night. They have tapered down his IV pain med a bit. He was offered food last night but wouldn't eat. He has not yet been able to stand, but he shifts position in his cage. I'm hoping to hear more from the surgeon today.

Re: Linda's Pinkerton needs vines - 1/22 update

Re: Linda's Pinkerton needs vines - 1/22 update

I visited my buddy tonight and I am encouraged. He was happy to see me. He is very doped up, but doing well. After they took off his cone of shame, he dragged himself to the litter pan and urinated on his own. He still won't eat, can't stand. he will be coming home tomorrow if everything goes according to plan.
