My friend posed a question I can't answer. She is using Levemir from a vial but, is considering the switch to the pens and I just ordered the Lantus pens. She asked if each pen came with it's own needle and don't they get dull with repeated use? Does anyone have an answer for us? We would feel awful using dull needles on Jake and Mugsy and making their treatment more of a misery. :? nailbite_smile

I believe the pens come with one-use disposable needles, so for (the intended) human use, a fresh one would be used for each shot - HOWEVER....!!!!
For kitties, I may be wrong here, but I understand that most people here still use a regular syringe with them - and just use the pen "as if it were a vial"? (I believe the pens have a rubber, piercable port, very similar to the ones on vials?) The pens I think aren't really ideal otherwise for kitty use as they can only dial in doses in 1.0 (whole unit) increments...?

Perhaps someone more familiar with actually using these, will chime in here?

I used the pen when DC was on Humulin. It can only dispense in full units.
You can by pen tips for it. The cost for the tips (100) is about the same as a box of 100 syringes.

Thanks! Those are the same needles we've been using for the Vetsulin. :-D

Sally,

I use the pens for Sara and use a U100 needle with 1/2 unit markings. I can measure out small doses under 1U and inbetween with them. It does have a rubber stopper on the bottom were you draw the insulin.
