I have always used carts for both L's and this is my first Pen ( sent/bought from Shelley and Scar)...Can I pull the part with the insulin in it off of the base with the twisty thing for easier storage?

I am used to having the cart in a med bottle with bubble wrap and dark paper- this pen is clumsy and wierd to hold...afraid I will drop it and it isn't protected...

If I can't seperate it, can I store it without the cap on it? Then I could just wrap the whole pen ( cap won't fit if I do that)

ergh.

Oh, and for future reference should I need it, I started the new pen on April 4.

Melissa, I never actually used the pens...I bought five of them years ago but then Tigger got sick so I gave them all away - I was afraid they would expire. I thought they were kind of cool actually.

Can you call the pharmacist and ask him if you can dismantle it?

Or post on Community and ask there? I could give you the names of a few people I know who have used them, but I don't think they post here on this new board unfortunately. :(

Maybe PM Steve...he might know. Venita might know too.
 
If there's a way, I don't see it. I tried pulling apart one of my old ones and even after screwing the end all the way out, I can't get it to twist apart. I think the mechanism which makes it inject is at the top of a long barrel, which is all one piece.

Conversely, I don't understand the cartridges because I thought they were meant to go in one of these pens, but I don't see how without breaking the pen.
 
The separate cartridges are ment to be used in a reusable pen such as the Novo Pen 4. See:

You are using a disposable which is not meant to be disassembled.

I am currently using the similar disposable pen for Lantus. I take the cap that came with the pen off and discard it. I "seal" the end with the rubber stopper with one of the plastic cap that covers the plunger end of BD syringes. The BD cap fits nicely over the treads where the disposable pen screw on.
 
I couldnt find a way to get the refil out of the pen without damaging it either. You do get used to the pen and its great in that the cap keeps it dark and protected and you dont have to worry about wrapping it up. What I do is put an elastic band around the box of pens and slide the pen I am using under that so it doesnt move around and store that in my crisper drawer, it gets little movement, crispers are kept a bit warmer than the rest of the fridge so you dont have to worry about it freezing either, its the most protected part of the fridge.
The pen is different but has its good points too.

I think I will just bubble wrap the whole thing- I know I will drop it eventually- probably right after I write this but BEFORE I get a chance to bubble wrap it! :lol:

tell me about the moevement thing- once Vicky had mentioned about me keeping mine in the door where it would get shaken every time I opened or closed the door, and I see above about the crisper...

IMO, the liquid in these things are like vacuumed packed or something and the liquid doesn;t really move.

Even the last cart I dropped and craked, there were not even bubble in the suspension!

So- how does the liquid move?

This may not be true of cartridges, but the pens develop bubbles in the chamber as the red plunger comes down. We don't inject air in to it, so not sure how the bubble gets in there, but it does.

So that's why I caution about the movement if you keep insulin in refrigerator door. I'm just passing on - someone else said it may be harmful. Who knows?
 
Hi Melissa. Just my two cents here, but I really like the pen over the cart. I feel the cart is better protected. I've dropped the pen a few time and never had any problems. You could probably wrap the whole pen in bubble wrap. I keep my box in the crisper, and the pen I'm using is just left out separately.
