Leo update-5/29/2012

Just wanted to give a quick update on sweet lil' Leo.

His pancreas hung in there like a champ for a couple of days-going all the way out to +26 and +31 on .1 unit doses this weekend. Woot!

Yesterday I noticed that the duration of Leo's BG being under the no-shoot number was dropping. I gave his .1 unit at +19 last night. Still pretty good.

However, this morning at +7 he was back to where it had taken him +20 or so to get to on the prior two days. When he gets to 150, we're going to try going up to .2...unless that would be a bad idea. Appetite is good, we've been giving mini-meals every hour or so this past weekend. BF has the week off and is home to monitor.

Perhaps his pancreas needs more healing time, but I'm still pretty happy with the way he's handling his reduced dose and staying "in the blue". We're hoping that going up just a smidge will help him.

Also, does anyone know if it is ok for Leo to have some (fresh) catnip? We have a little patch of it right outside our door, and I've been not allowing him any (oh, mean Mommy!!)...I'm guessing that plants fall in the category of carbohydrate, unfortunately.

Thanks as always,

Kate & Leo

I think he is doing great. We have no idea why the pancreas works for a while and then doesn't and we don't know why it lasts longer sometimes than others.

As long as you monitor, I think .2 is fine. And I am pretty sure I have heard catnip is fine also, so give him a treat.

Kate - let that sweet baby eat his salad....there's no carbs in it and has good stuff....KT hollers for 'salad' almost every day during the spring and summer. I grow wheat for him as he doesn't really LIKE catnip! Yep, he's a 'unique' cat...(I usually call him 'wierd') :-D

HUGS!

Hi Kate -

Been doing my own thing lately with Grayson and haven't posted much or read many posts of the newer kitties on the block. Leo is doing AMAZING!!! Great eye to be giving .1u and even better that you've let him ride it out with those marathon cycles! I think your increase seems reasonable, provided you or BF are able to keep an eye out mid-cycle. Looks like Leo aspires to be one of those OTJ kitties!!! You're doing great!

Yes, the .2 increase is good to try, but given how he has reacted to .1 doses, you should do this only if you can monitor to see how low he goes, and intervene if it seems like he's dropping to fast or too far.
The catnip is okay. I am not sure how he reacts to catnip, but Bob would be very energetic and want to play when he was "high", lol. Exercise can help to keep his BG down too, so let him snack on the 'nip!

Oh, he is going to be one happy little fella when he hears that!! I felt so bad for him, it's right outside the window, and I know when he perches on the window sill, he can smell it. And after being tested every two hours for three days straight and never turning a hair or copping an attitude, he more than deserves a treat!

Sue-thanks for continuing to check in on us! It means a lot, it's very reassuring to know you are out there.

Squeaky & KT-Wheat, huh?!? I've never heard of that-pretty cool.

Hi Lu-Ann, thanks for dropping by. I hope your baby Grayson is doing well. I admire you guys that are dealing with so many things at once-it must be very challenging. Your kitty is lucky to have a mama like you! I have to give a lot of credit to Carl and Sue for helping me figure out Leo's dose. Everyone here has been really great about helping us.

Carl-Leo's the same way when "under the influence"...bats everything around that he can find, whether or not it's his toy. He also turns into an ankle-biter: goes behind you when you're walking and tries to attack your heels and lower legs. All and all...pretty funny!

Thanks, everyone, for the advice re: dosing. BF is indeed home and is very diligent about monitoring Leo. As of now, Leo's holding steady at where he was when I left for work-right around 135. Perhaps I judged his poor pancreas too harshly and too quickly! BF will continue to monitor through the afternoon and I think maybe it's best just to keep him at .1 until we have longer term data.

My little guy knows things that I do not...

BF checked Leo at around +13, and he was at 148, so he decided to shoot. He got the syringe ready with the dose of .2 units, only to have Leo run away and hide. He's never done that at shot time before. BF became frustrated after about a half hour of Leo doing everything possible to evade his injection, and decided to wait. He tested again in roughly an hour, just because it's a pre-injection habit-Leo had dropped to 114 on his own.

BF said it was like Leo knew he didn't need the shot. I'm glad my kitty is so smart. ;-)

He was thrilled with his piece of catnip-I'm going to see if I can make a post with pre-nip and post-nip pictures...it was awesome to see him play like that!
