Lantus?

So - the vet had me purchase Novolin NPH yesterday for my cat, and today, I'm being told she should be on Lantus. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any resources to get this medication for under $100, or of a place where I could donate my Novolin NPH (and possibly get a few doses of lantus in exchange?)

I'm really up a creek financially after $400 in vet bills - and I'd really like to get my cat started on the right meds ASAP, especially if they've been shown to put the diabetes in remission (http://felinediabetes.com/glargine.htm)

Thanks for any advice - really new to this and want to get started on the right foot!

I live in the Seattle area, also.

If you purchase one SoloStar pen (3 mL), it will be less than $100.
However, when you buy it as a 5-pack, the cost per pen is less.
Many pharmacies will sell it only as a 5-pack, though.

If there is a FDMB Lantus user near you, you may be able to split a 5-pack.

But depending on where you are located you may need your vet to write you a script for Lantus Solostar pens. I believe in Canada you don't but in the US you do, and just not sure about other countries.

You can use a pet prescription card: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=53397 It won't save a whole lot of money, though, but it's something.

Some people buy Lantus from an online Canadian pharmacy. It's less than what a US pharmacy charges. A presciption may be required. This thread has info: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11530

You want to get the box of five SoloStar pens, not the 10 ml bottle. The bottle tends to poop out after a month. With most cats only needing a few units of insulin a day, at the end of the month you're throwing away a barely used bottle and that's a huge waste of money. The SoloStar pens are 3 ml each so there's less insulin being thrown away every month or so. The box is about $220 or so but the price per pen is way less than a 10 ml bottle which is $110 or so. Some pharmacies may sell you a single SoloStar pen.

Check the Supply Closet http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewforum.php?f=15 Sometimes there is an offer for Lantus there.

Thank you all for the info - really appreciate it! I'm hunting around locally to see if I know anyone ON lantus or who has a cat that no longer needs the med.... since I *JUST* bought Novolin NPH yesterday... *grumble* Gonna keep her on Novolin till I can afford another form of insulin.

My vet said that the Lantus bottle / vial should last 4 - 6 months. She said the pharmacy wouldn't say that - but her experience has shown when refrigerated, it is still good for several months.

If you haven't already, go to the lantus forum and read the sticky thread on the LLEF. There may be some available help there.

Refrigerated AND not stored on the door - the movement breaks it down faster.

Also, my understanding is that a prescription is required for any US orders from Canada.

Yes, a prescription is needed in the US even if ordering from Canada, Musette's Lantus was ordered from Canada, but it required a prescription and I also had to sent a copy of my photo ID. Also for legal reasons, anyone that might have Lantus to either sell or give away would need you to have a prescription for Lantus before being able to legally give it to you.
