Hi,
My 14 year old cat was just diagnosed with diabetes. He’s being prescribed lantus solarstar pen and it is out of our budget. I heard that you could do a savings card but I’m not sure if I enter the cats info or mine? Silly I know. The pharmacy said that we pay out of pocket and that we can’t use any of our info for it so I’m confused. It asks about commercial insurance and age.

I just got the Lantus savings card last week. Go to the site saveonlantus.com. Answer the questions as if the lantus is for your cat who doesn’t have medical insurance and is not covered by Medicare. The only exception is to use your birthday rather than your cat’s The requirement is that you must be over 18. The savings card is worth the effort as it cuts the cost of lantus significantly. Good luck

Hi there. Sorry to hear your kitty has just been diagnosed with diabetes, but I'm so happy you found the board. You will find so much technical info here and moral support.
I filled the form out using my cat's name "Uncle" for first name and my last name. I checked the box
I brought my cat's prescription and Lantus coupon to the local Rite Aid and was able to use it.
I checked the box "no" for the commercial insurance and "yes" to over 18 years old

Hi there,

If you are in the US...

After researching this for my own needs and trying different human Rx discount cards, ie goodrx, scriptsave, etc. many of them will let you print and some pharmacy’s will take and some will not. The ones that will, the savings are small (about 10-15%). Some specifically ask if it is for a pet when printing, ie. Goodrx. When they ask this, it means that coupon will not cover it for pets. I know Lantus does not intend their coupons to be used for animals, I called them to verify when I was trying to find a cheaper price and saw the coupon option on their site.

One card that is for pets specifically, that will get a small discount is https://petdrugcard.com/index.html.

The BEST way to get Lantus at the cheapest price is to go through Marks Marine Pharmacy in Canada. You will save about 60-65% of the cost in the US, this is even adding shipping charges. That is what the majority of Lantus users in the US do. Shipping is 4-5 days from Canada to continental US via airmail and USPS shipped in a temperature safe container. Call them on the phone and they will help you through the process. Most people here get the pens, but the vial is similarly discounted, shipping costs are the same for either one.

Our Walgreens here took it. Our cat's name was Frank, but "Frank the cat" is on the account. They always call Brian Frank. We were laughing yesterday because it has been a while since we'd order diabetes supplies/insulin and we were getting a savings card for strips. Just wondering if they know "the cat" is not Brian's nickname. LOL

Looks like Hanna and I cross-posted. I concur with everything she said.

YES, if you can't get anywhere with the Discount card, or there is not much savings, please try Mark's Marine pharmacy as Julie suggested. Many people on the board here get their Lantus from them. I was REALLY lucky. My pharmacy not only honored my coupon (full well knowing it was for my cat) but also the pen only cost me $10!!!
Good luck and please let us know how it's going :bighug:

Hi @Barbara & Uncle (GA) !
And everyone!

Okay, so I'm having some trouble...looks like I might have to go back to paying full price for my lantus.

Has anybody else tried to renew their Lantus savings card and had difficulties? I finally got mine renewed (after I finally figured out I was typing in the wrong number) and it's successfully renewed, but when I went to the pharmacy they told me it won't work anymore because I've used the maximum allowable LIFETIME fills for this discount program.

Apparently we've been on the discount program for 465 days. I assumed that renewing the card would restart another 12 discounts or something like that, but I guess there is a lifetime limit? Anybody else run into this issue or anybody successfully renew their Lantus savings card and use it again?

@Ozzy Pawzbourne are you ever on the board? I hope you all are doing well? Are you still using the discount card? I know we got our initial cards right around the same time so I'm just curious if you've been able to continue using it.

Hey Julie, there's Taffy's cute face YaY :cat: Miss you guys and hope things are rollin' along
Bummer on the Lantus savings card. I only used mine for a little less than a year, Uncle died about 11 months after I got mine for him.
I don't know if there is a lifetime limit, hope somebody else will have more helpful info.
Found this link, maybe there is a workaround!;)

Hi Barbara! I miss you, too! Life has been so hectic! I just moved again, it's a good thing we're in a cute little condo now. I still have Taffy rolling along doing pretty well, he's about 16 now we're on 2.25 years, I think, from diagnosis. He had a big dental that went well and he's just chugging along. I also still have baby kitty and he's fine as well. I can't believe it's been over a year since uncle has been gone.

thanks for that link I'll check it out! I'm looking for anything to help with cost. I guess the discount was great while it lasted but now it's hard to pay full price. I'm also looking into basaglar. I wonder if anyone has used that yet on this board. I'm going to do some research, as the pharmacist suggested switching to that cuz they have another discount program & it's supposed to be very similar to Lantus.

I hope everything else is well with you take care!

only coupons i see are 99 for a vial and 149 fir 5 pack?

Oh my gosh! I'm so happy! So I went back to pharma to try the pet coupon that @Barbara & Uncle (GA) posted the link to. It didn't give much of a discount only took it down $3. There was a different girl working and I explained to her my problem and she said let her try it again with the Lantus card because she thought maybe the system had an updated earlier because it was a Sunday... she got it to work! So I am back to free Lantus yay!

There’s an app in the Apple store called GoodRX that works for Lantus and quite a few other things. That is the only one that has worked for me.

For anyone living near the Mexican border buying them in Mexico may be a very good option, but you'll have to go personally since they can't be sent

I tried this lantus coupon and it actually raised the price by a penny. tried at cvs. was hoping for more than that lol

pet drug card, good rx is also no help
Yeah, probably depends on the person that is helping you and how much pleasure they derive from the sense of authority of enforcing the "no pet" rules. I got discounts with the GoodRX app on both the Lantus at CVS and the Freestyle Libre at Walmart.

Did you use the card successfully? Did they request an NPI number to prove it came from a human doctor and not a veterinarian?
