Kyo's thread part 2!

It’s almost impossible to keep a cat out of everything all the time. Especially if they are food motivated. No matter how hard I tried Sheba managed to get into things. She ate a small birthday cup cake I had out on the table defrosting for my granddaughter once. We came back inside and no cake. Found Sheba under the table with a half eaten cake looking sick. And it was chocolate which is poisonous to cats. So phone calls to the vet etc and a sick cat that night. She also regularly raided the kitchen garbage bin as well and I could never leave food around on the table. I also checked the floor all the time.
Harry my current boy who isn’t a FD kitty is just as bad. Into everything.
Don’t beat yourself up.

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't curse the one thing that has really helped this process along, which is Kyo's appetite. And you know its funny, I always hear about other cats sneaking human food and Kyo has just shown no interest in my food whatsoever. Actually I take the back. She likes vanilla ice cream (she tried to lick my cone once and I was so surprised), chicken pot-pie gravy (probably why she loves the gravy lovers food), and sweet tea LOL. The sweet tea is unexplained, but I suppose its par for the course for being in a southern state LOL. What kind of cat is Harry? Is he the one in your avatar picture or was that miss Sheba? :)

The avatar is Sheba. Both she and Harry are Australian Mists which are 1/4 Abyssinian, 1/2 Burmese and 1/4 DSH.

Oh my goodness look at those big feet! Thats crazy that you know their genetics! I've always wondered if there was a way you could test to find out genetics for cats. I know there is one for dogs (not sure how reliable though). Harry is such a lovely cream color and dannngg hes claimed a nice leather seat all to himself, what a spoiled boy :D Is Clover one of yours too?

The breed Australian Mist only started in the 1970s. And they are all 1/4 Abyssinian 1/2 Burmese and 1/4 DSH. Harry is a Golden Spotted Mist and has spots which can be hard to see in some photos. Yes he's a lovely deep cream and a mummy's boy!:cat:
Clover actually belongs to my daughter who lives next door but she spends every day here from about 7am and goes home at night when they come home....and she thinks she owns both places. They are great mates and are the same age. I'm happy for her to go home to sleep because when she stays here at night, they tend to race around all night. When Harry is here on his own he likes to snuggle up in bed with me and we all get a good sleep!

This is such a fun thread! It looks like Kyo survived the kibble caper alright. Which is a fantastic sign of her pancreas function right now. Of course you don't want to be taxing its ability, so staying vigilant on the kibble will matter (as you already know), but it looks like she was able to clean it out of her system on her own.

Sam doesn't eat human food....except for potato chips and beer! I used to say that beer could not be left unattended, but he's so dang sneaky about it that now the rule is that beer must be served in the bottle here. Sorry guests, no glasses, mugs or steins. If there is an open glass, he will find a way to get to it the second you look away! I think he was a frat boy in a previous life.

Hahaha, it's so funny when they have clear preferences for some things. One of those nine lives must have definitely been in a frat house :joyful: Cats are such stubborn creatures, but I guess you could also admire their pesky persistence. I think that's why I was always a cat person though, I appreciate that Kyo really chooses when she wants to spend time cuddling or napping with me because if she doesn't she'd just leave. Very free willed creatures that like to get what they want! :cat:

Kyo is doing really well so far besides our contraband hiccup. Today she read me a 49 though...my understanding of that is she can't go hypo if shes not receiving insulin right @Djamila ? But then if I do a mid test, I'm supposed to see a decrease in blood sugar to show that her pancreas is regulating on its own... so that means she will get lower than 49? I hope this question makes sense

It's not that they can't go hypo without insulin, but it would only happen if there was some other serious health problem. In general though, a healthy cat won't hypo without injected insulin. And we see lots of cats who are off insulin and show numbers in the 40's, so I wouldn't worry about it.

You'll often see a drop in BG after a meal, but that's more when they are just coming off insulin. I think it's unlikely she would really drop from here. And when you're starting from a low number, a little rise would be fine to see as long as she stays green. :bighug:

They are all just absolutely gorgeous and they look rather sturdy as well! :)

(ETA: article is about FD)
Interestingly brings my mind back to this article:
“Increased susceptibility has been reported in Burmese in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, and Maine Coon, Russian Blue, and Siamese were reported in the USA and Norwegian Forest cats in Europe.3,4,68 Burmese cats in Australia and the UK are four times more likely to develop diabetes, with 1 in 10 cats aged ≥8 years affected.24

Just every single day I check back in on you two I am so thrilled!!!! She has made such beautiful progress. It’s nice to see the guidelines and treatment working in action. :D

Dang, neat article! Literally the only time I am interested in reading a scholarly journal is when its about my cat lol. Those same articles bore me to death when I have to read them for school :p. I wonder if those breeds are more susceptible due to their popularity since they are all well-known and expensive breeds? Not sure if their source actually covered that part though. I thought the fructosamine section was really interesting because my vet recommended that I do one in a month after our last check up. It actually pushed me to purchase the AlphaTrak2 because Kyo gets stress induced hyperglycemia, which might end up reading on the fructosamine test and its an expensive test! I hope that getting a couple of curves and readings on the AT2 will give my vet some peace of mind that I'm not some incompetent crazy person who has denied a vet blood curve already. ALSO the ADW site has the AT2 kits for $42.00 right now AND if you have ever heard of the "honey" browser extension, its a little program that searches for coupons that will apply to your cart and it saved me $7! So I got the AT2 kit for $34.81 total and some how also didn't have to pay shipping?? Like the test strips are $50 for 50 or you can just buy and entire kit again for cheaper?? How wasteful...

Anyway, thanks for all the warm wishes Cassandra! Hope Alice's recovery is going well! I saw that she just got some stitches taken out and then got a staple  poor baby

Thanks! She’s okay though. There was just a lot of tension on one spot from where her tumor was removed. It’s already looking better. :D

I love a good research article when I can focus, and I actually miss college!! Lol. Maybe not as much when I was in it.

You never answered my question on your intro post, noticing Kyo’s name, I asked if you were into Japanese? It was my foreign language in college and part of my college goals. =^.^=

I would think in regards to those breeds.... if they are more expensive then that would not necessarily make them more common, and my presumption from the article presentation is that there is likely a genetic component... probably interacting with environmental factors, such as dietary choices common in the areas mentioned. But I didn’t check the additional sources......(yet? :p )

Aw, glad to hear shes healing well and Kyo and I hope she continues to grow stronger!! :D

And oh! Yes! I'm sorry I was so overwhelmed with info when I posted that I completely forgot to even talk about my hobbies! I also had to take a foreign language but I only ever got to intermediate level Japanese and that was my sophomore year of college (I'm finally a senior, woohoo!) and I've regressed sooo much!! I can read hiragana and katakana pretty okay, but the Kanji didn't stick very well :( I love the language and the culture, I hope to visit there one day as well! Hopefully I'll be able to brush up on my language studies before I go :D

All of my pets names have been Japanese since I was little. I had a winter white dwarf hamster named Haru (got her in the spring) and then I got Kyo (named from a Japanese manga named Fruits Basket where one of the main characters is a boy who transforms into a cat, back when I thought miss Kyo was a Mr.Kyo LOL) and then I had a Syrian hamster named Mochi...cause she was squishy haha! Love owning hamsters, but I've taken a break since their lifespans are so short and I get so attached :( But I do plan on owning another when I finish college and move out cause I can't help it :cat: Have you ever seen on YouTube where people build crazy houses for their hamsters? I love those!

I had a cat named Kon after the lion plush spirit thing from Bleach. =^.^= I didn’t name him but my ex did.

かんじはダメです! lol.

Mmm, mochi.

So I bet you would have been one who already knew what bonito flakes are when they get suggested as a LC kitty treat! :)

Oh hey I loved Bleach!! I am not at all up to date with what anime is popular right now, but back in the day Bleach, Naruto, and Full Metal Alchemist was my jam!

And yeah Kanji is hard >.<

Also yes I do know what bonito flakes are! One of my favorite foods is takoyaki :D I'd probably eat all the bonito flakes if I ordered them LOL

Aw thank you for the check up @Bron and Sheba ! We are doing good so far! I'm really curious to see what she reads on the alpha trak since shes been reading 40s on my human meter, it should get here by tomorrow so looking forward to that :D

Kyo OTJ trial day 11 and going strong!! Too bad we had that dry food hiccup or else she would have went OTJ on my birthday  But thats okay, from the beginning of starting this process she has has a schedule all of her own!! :D Looking forward to checking back in with you guys on the 10th for day 14!!

So exciting!!! I love seeing Kyo holding in such lovely numbers :D

And a very happy birthday to you! :bighug: I hope you had a great day and enjoyed celebrating!

And speaking of celebrating, can't wait to see you on Day 14!

I know!! She's been doing so great, now if only we can get these reoccurring ear infections to quit! She's got an appointment today for it

And aww thank you so much for the birthday wishes! @Camille and Cyclone very graciously donated their time and made a video for Kyo that I'll be posting tomorrow for the official OTJ! So so excited, I wish it was tomorrow already! I still consider it a late birthday present ;) from Kyo, haha
