Kyo's thread part 2!

It was recommended that I make a new thread since the other one had gone over 2 pages.

I'm currently awake at 5 in the morning having another PJ party with Kyo on a .1u dose! Handling the curbing just fine, she's been reading 53-56 from +4 to +6 even with 1 tsp gravy lovers after each test. Hoping she hops up on her surfboard soon since we are past the +6 mark or else I'm going to break out the Karo. I really should have reduced when she read her first green @PMPS, I blame myself

69 @+7.5, fed 1 last tsp of high carb and then put down 1 table spoon of LC wet that she mostly ate and stopped testing there since she got over her nadir . Going to catch some Zzzz before AMPS! Goodnight everyone :)

This is really up to your preference. Personally, I like keeping everything together in one place - sometimes it's nice to be able to look back without having to go searching for previous threads.

I blame myself
Honestly, if I had been around when you asked, I probably would have told you to go for it. Maybe Kyo heard me say she didn't seem to be in any hurry to get off insulin and decided to prove me wrong. ;)

Looks like it's time to try a Drop. :)

Holy cow, she just read 62 for AMPS, I DON'T THINK I CAN POKE THAT LOL. Going to stall for 20 and see what's up.

Thanks @ohbell !!

@Djamila glad to know that I was on the right track with my thinking! She still continues to surprise me, I'm honestly trying not to rush this process! But just when I think we would take some time to settle into this dose and now we are here. Craziness.

@Bron and Sheba Thank you!!! I had an amazing teacher ;) Seriously though, you taught me how to curb Kyo's levels and empowered me to be able to learn to do it on my own!! I'm getting all choked up again :bighug: thank you thank you!:bighug:

72 after a 20 minute stall. Maybe I should have stalled one more time? I don't feel comfortable with shooting that number unless you guys were around to instruct me otherwise so I skipped this morning dose. Hopefully she doesn't rise too much

I saw @Djamila suggest this, what about a drop now instead of the 0.1?

I am so glad for you and Kyo to see such awesome progress so soon!!!! What a star, Harukyo!!! :D

Would the drop dose be okay to shoot on numbers like that? @AliceMeowliss&Cassandra
Well firstly, I can’t answer you with 100% because I am not experienced with ProZinc, but..... have you tested again today? I would be interested to see how Kyo is doing today since she did not receive any insulin at all.

My general answer with the caveat of course that every cat is different, is that that drop would probably be more helpful to Kyo’s lasting recovery, and you can shoot greens as long as you are not blindly shooting a ridiculously high dose (like when someone is new and their vet tells them to shoot like 5 units or something ridiculous of Vetsulin without testing—that’s what I mean by “ridiculously high dose”—not appropriate for that situation yet), you know your cat, you have plenty of test strips and can monitor if needed.
You have learned to feed the lows and prop Kyo up if necessary. The only other reason I might say to reduce or skip a dose would be if the caregiver needs precious sleep or has to be gone from the home.

That being said, please wait for someone else to support these statements as I wouldn’t be comfortable advising without backup, for sure. :)

It's funny that you mention the sleep thing because that's exactly what I was thinking this morning! I knew I was too sleep deprived to be able to do proper testing through the morning. I think I've gotten enough sleep now though, just in time for a +6 test.

I’m glad you skipped. I’d be guided by @Djamila because she understands Prozinc. Looks like she is staying in normal numbers. Test a couple of hours after the food and if her BSL drops it will show her pancreas is working. Giving a small snack.. a teaspoon of low carb .. at +9 can sometimes keep the next Preshot down. Try that too.

Oh what lovely numbers!!! I'm tearing up a little myself now :).

So what you're aiming to see is most of the numbers in the 50-80 range, with occasional numbers up to 120. And as Bron said, you want to see a slight drop after eating. The +9 snack is a very helpful thing to do at this phase, as it can keep the PS numbers from climbing too high, so if there's any way to do that, I recommend it.

And by the way, I'm so glad you skipped this morning. That was absolutely the right decision. Fingers crossed for a nice green PMPS!

88 @PMPS the lowest PMPS to date! Still close to the 80 range, but I'm wondering if she can handle the drop dose. I think I might go for it since I'll be around to test? I know shes eager to get off the insulin but I feel hesitant to have her quit cold turkey.

Something else that I wanted to mention is that she's been eating less per time she's at her bowl. She usually finishes 1 3.3 oz can of FF within 2-2 hours and 30 minutes of feeding and she hasn't been finishing her +4 meals, usually letting them sit for quite a while. Her appetite has become so controlled since she's improved so much maybe I'm just not use to her controlling her eating again lol, she use to scarf down her dry food as soon as I put it down. I have to coax her to eat a portion of her wet food now.

I’ll be looking for your updates tonight! Pretty sure I’ll be up for awhile too. I think going for the drop is better because it gives her a little more time to heal, but again, with the lower numbers of course it’s better if you can keep an eye on her with any dose, big or small. I’m glad you can try tonight!

Eating less is great I think as a sign of healthy regulation, too! Kyo’s recovery has been super fast and it makes me so happy! :)

Will watch with interest how this cycle goes. You are doing an absolutely amazing job with Kyo. You can be very proud of yourself!

Thank you!! I'll be back for a +4 update!

@AliceMeowliss&Cassandra Yeah! And I was hoping to decrease the amount of food she eats anyway since shes a chubby girl right now :p so I'm glad shes in agreement with me on that!

I got some good pictures of her today, she joined me for my much needed afternoon nap and claimed my arm as her pillow. And then later on nesting in my blankets and clean clothes (why is it always the clean clothes! LOL)

Haha, I'm glad you guys liked the pictures. I definitely had lots of room to practice on her ears! And Kyo loves to chase the sheets too! Makes making the bed a little more fun :cat:

So Kyo came to me at +3 time and so I got a test in then, she read 60 and I wanted her to have the rest of her dinner so I put down 1/4th of her LC wet food. Tested again @+4 and she read 57, gave her another 1/4th can for a total of 2 1/4 cans of food. I thought she probably wasnt too hungry today because of all the feeding we did last night curbing her.

I'm trying to keep her eating 2 1/2 cans for now (down from 3 cans) because I don't want her to lose too much weight too quickly. I'll be ordering a baby scale from amazon tomorrow so I can begin tracking that too! Sorry for the 20 minute delay!

Hey twinsies but an hour different, 61 at +4 for me and just got 57 at +5.....!

I looove having a baby scale for Alice. I used to only know her weight by going to the vet. The baby scale is so much better and now she just steps up on it anytime I get it out, even if it hasn’t finished turning on and calibrating yet. Haha! It also weighs in kilograms first so I just started doing it that way and now it’s easier for me to go back and forth in my head between kg and lbs. :)

OMG GOOD GREENS!! Yay for Alice!! :D:D But looks like you're probably going to have to stay up testing a bit more huh? I was thinking I do the same and get a +6, I sleep better knowing shes past her nadir  so I will be here!

I hope Kyo will get use to the baby scale too! I think If I don't make a big deal about it, she will probably lay on it on her own because she loves to claim new things :p. Hey, do you feed your cat a variety of flavors of wet food that are close within carb content? Or do you stick to one flavor? I'm trying to figure out if I can just stick to the flavor Kyo likes most that way I'm not having to calculate like 3 different calorie contents every day o_O lol

Have you thought about getting an automatic feeder for her. Even when she’s in remission it will be very useful. It will save you getting up at night

Honestly, I didn't think I'd be breaking up her food this much so I hadn't really planned ahead to get an automatic feeder so soon because I didn't know how much stalling I'd have to do for her shots and stuff like that. Maybe I'll buy it for myself as a congratulatory present when/if kyo goes into remission!

Kyo read 70 @AMPS so I'm skipping her shot again! If she reads me another PS out of the 50-80 range should I drop dose or skip? @Djamila I'm not sure how consistent I need to be with the drop dose. So far kyo is going on her second 24 hour cycle with the drop dose

Wow 55 @PMPS! Kind of scary to see her so close to the lime green number but I know it's okay because she got absolutely no insulin today!! Is it fair to call this day 1 of our OTJ trial?!

@ +1 I caught Kyo eating contraband dry dog food (don't know how much) and tested right away. She was at 51. I am so upset I cannot even describe. What should I expect to see in her levels over the next couple of hours? I'm really hoping this doesn't hurt her progress

It will take an hour or 2 for the dry to
Affect the BS level. You Can’t trust cats around any dry food. Especially F D kitties.
I’d get rid of the dry and feed the dog tinned or raw. It will always be a temptation.
She will be fine as you can always give insulin but you dont want it to happen once she’s off insulin.

Alice snuck into the other cats’ dry food even when it was up on the cat towers and she would have been too weak to get to it at the time. Or should have been. Hope Kyo didn’t get very much!

Ugh that sucks. I'll just have to be so careful. My family is not as "health" oriented as I am about their pets..but they also cannot afford to buy anything but dry food. Its a very tough situation for a low income family. Its tough on me to have to be the "perfect" one and always make sure every piece of stray dog food is picked up if Kyo wants to hang out in the living room. I didn't catch that someone just straight up left the cup that they use to scoop out the dog food on a chair or something and so I guess Kyo must have knocked it down gotten into some of it. I think i'll just have to supervise her at all times when I let her out. I'm usually always so good at catching these things, but I'm not perfect all the time.

I only have to hold out for a year and a half before I can move out after I finish school. Just going to have to make it work until then :/

I have no idea how I missed your response last night! :p

So.... food.... She has a primary cheaper food that is 5%. That’s her friskies pate. Sheba perfect portions in broth are approx 3% on the chart. She gets freeze dried treats which are zero. But as long as the packaging of the food says it is something like “100% complete and balanced nutrition for adult cats” then it means it is supplemented appropriately to cover all the amino acid needs and micronutrients that are considered essential. Dr. Pierce’s chart or website, wherever I read it? mentions something specific about the importance of liver, and calcium. Possibly in one of the homemade recipe pages..... So yes, I would feed the same low-carb complete nutrition kind of you and Kyo’s mutual choice, as long as she is not having GI or other issues..... and you can get things like pure bites freeze dried with duck liver for treats and then you’ve got liver no matter what too. :D

Don’t beat yourself up. I also had rabbits who snuck into the dry cat food more than once! And they are herbivores!!! It horrified me every time! Like... “Nooooooooooo don’t doooooo it!!!!”
You are doing your absolute best in a situation where you do not have perfect control.

My ridiculously food motivated cat (next cat health project on the list :banghead:) snuck into my herpes cat’s room and gave himself and his buddy feline herpes too. Now everyone has it! And I did my best. He was..... persistent and sneaky!

I’m low SES too. We don’t all get perfect choices but it sounds like you are really making the best of what resources you do have, and it’s so valuable. I’d rather an animal have a loving home than be in a shelter... or worse.

Thanks for all that info!! I'm sure Kyo would prefer to stick to her favorite flavor of FF instead of me having her cycle between 3-4. She really likes the chicken and liver flavor FF can I've noticed (or at least she has the least problems eating that one) so ill stick to that and maybe one more kind once a week! :)

If you think about it... when we feed dry we often feed the exact same thing always, too....
FF bugs Alice’s tummy, but I tried that flavor! We are chicken and liver friskies now. =^.^=

Anyway when the fall semester starts you’re going to be busy! At least feeding can be easy on you. :) It’s actually so amazing that Kyo’s timing is summer for you and that she is improving so much already. How crazy! And good.

Thanks so much for cheering me up about it, I try so hard and my family honestly has been doing better about taking their pets for shots and stuff I've been very impressed with how they try too. I suppose you're right, the dogs they have absolutely adore my parents and it beats being in a shelter all alone :(

I use to have a rabbit when I was younger too! Do you like owning rabbits? We ended up rehoming ours because we moved away and she ended up with some really nice people at a ranch! :)

As for the feline HIV OMG, I honestly am not even very familiar with how HIV effects cats! You've got me going and doing some more research now!

Thanks for the pick me up again, I really appreciate it Cassandra :bighug: I will continue to do my best and even better!

Herpes, not HIV!!!! Herpes just causes respiratory snottiness and I believe can cause issues with conjuncta (eye). My cat who caught it in the first place..... she just sneezes in my face. I’m thankful I wear glasses. :p
A LOT of cat health and disease I have learned has been through my own experiences or those of others. I didn’t know about ear mites until I helped a friend take her cat to the vet for his swollen ear, many years ago.
But I found out about what was wrong with Majyk (patient zero haha) when she went outside (no one else goes out) and kept not eating for a day or two from her outdoor bowl at all and then I didn’t see her for a couple days then I guess she hid in my garage..... I was worried sick. That’s how I really learned cats are motivated to eat by their ability to smell their food!

I love my rabbits, both gone and still.... hare.... (couldn’t resist the bad pun). They were all free-roaming house rabbits. The one I had from a baby passed away from GI stasis complications on Alice’s birthday last year actually! The lion lop passed thanksgiving night. Now we have our mini Rex TomTom left. He eats my furniture and molding when he can. Does his best job at being bunny that he can. :D
There’s this whole story from my childhood, my preschool was giving away baby bunnies and my parents wouldn’t let me have own. They were SO right. But I always wanted one. Then she needed a friend. Then someone was like... hey I have this rabbit I don’t want..... then I had 7 furbabies. That was officially my caregiver limit!

My big PSA about rabbits is to encourage people not to adopt them as Easter gifts. A LOT of bunnies end up in shelters within a few months of Easter. TomTom was at the big city shelter by August, where I found him a month later.

Also re: continuing to do your best and better.... cannot remember who right now, someone on here has a Maya Angelou quote on their signature that is something about doing your best until you know better... then doing better. I don’t actually know the quote.... but I’m sure you got the gist!

It’s almost impossible to keep a cat out of everything all the time. Especially if they are food motivated. No matter how hard I tried Sheba managed to get into things. She ate a small birthday cup cake I had out on the table defrosting for my granddaughter once. We came back inside and no cake. Found Sheba under the table with a half eaten cake looking sick. And it was chocolate which is poisonous to cats. So phone calls to the vet etc and a sick cat that night. She also regularly raided the kitchen garbage bin as well and I could never leave food around on the table. I also checked the floor all the time.
Harry my current boy who isn’t a FD kitty is just as bad. Into everything.
Don’t beat yourself up.

Idk if I miss read the HIV or maybe I just thought it was the same thing as herpes, either way I'm glad it turned out to be not that terrible of a thing for you kitties! I just learned about ear mites recently too! Girl, we have 2 cats 5 chihuahuas and 1 chocolate lab. I'm right there with you with that caregiver limit :p And haha love the pun. They will always live on in our hearts! And, yeah I hear about the bunnies during Easter time too! So ridiculous. Animals aren't a holiday trend. The world isn't as much as a perfect place as we would hope :( all we can do is educate ourselves and inform others. Like how this place does! :joyful:
