Hi All,

I'm not new to Feline Diabetes, my 13 year old has been in remission for about 8 months now so I haven't been on here in awhile. I home test her regularly (avg. weekly) and she's consistently been between 40-60 each week. She was completely Fancy Feast until my other cat was diagnosed with weak kidney and I had to change food to something they both could eat. We switched to Friskies Special Diet and that seemed to make everyone happy until a day or so ago when diabetic kitty quit eating! This is very uncharacteristic for her.

Here's what I posted on FB....

I have a dilemma and any suggestions are welcome! My 13 year old diabetic (in remission) is refusing to eat. This is a first, since this girl LOVES food! She's the bully of the group and will force herself into their food just to eat all of it. About a month ago I had to change foods from Fancy Feast to Friskies (for another one of my cats who was recently diagnosed with kidney issues). Diabetic kitty actually seemed to prefer Friskies over FF. Yesterday, I noticed that she isn't eating and is very lethargic. I tried giving her FF again but she's not eating that either! I'm really worried since this is sooooo not like her! Very uncharacteristic. Thoughts?

How long has it been since she's eaten anything? Another low carb thing you can try is meat baby food...Beech Nut or Gerbers

We don't want her NOT eating for more than 24 hours, so if it's getting to that point, then try anything

Hi Chris, Update: she did eat a little bit of FF yesterday late afternoon but only about 2 tsp. then late in the evening around 10:oo pm she ate a few of the dried chicken pieces so she did have a little food in her tummy. I wasn't feeling well last night and fell asleep during our conversation...sorry about that! This morning I slightly warmed up the FF and sprinkled the parmesan on top and she ate quite a bit of that...maybe a little over a tablespoon. She used the litter box and, for the most part, it was diarrhea-ish. There was one bigger piece that resembled a hair ball...?? So, I'm hoping whatever it was is out...?? I'll watch her this morning and if need be, I'll take her to the vet.

When is the last time she had a BM before the loose stool? Is she having any GI symptoms (ie. vomiting, drooling, looking at food but not eating)? Sometimes when cats are constipated, the loose stool can travel around the obstruction. Obstruction can make them loose their appetite.

Thank you so much for the read. To the best of my knowledge her BM's have been regular. I have 3 cats so it's hard to tell. I'll update when I have more info.

Soooo, another update: Cairo is acting more like her playful self. She seems to be drinking and using the liter box just fine. She will eat Fancy Feast if it's room temp AND if I sprinkle a bit of parmesan to it however, she isn't eating as much as she was in the past (which isn't necessarily a bad thing since she is a little--ok A LOT-- overweight)!! About 6 month(ish) ago Cairo had a dental and the vet had to take out 6 of her teeth (and 2 had already fell out before the dental) ... so she was down a total of 8 teeth! Here's what I noticed today... she is missing ANOTHER tooth ...annnnnd, it was the last K9 tooth that she had! Not sure if that has anything to do with her lack of appetite but I'm sure her mouth is sensitive.

If she just lost it, there may be a pocket of infection that cause that. Check her mouth and if you see redness/swelling, I'd encourage a vet visit.

Haven't noticed any redness or swelling. I've been watering her food down a bit more and she seems to be eating and acting like her old self ... for the most part. I'm traveling for the next few days and have a reliable house/pet sitter who will keep close tabs on her.

Make sure the pet sitter has a letter authorizing her to take your cat to you regular vet for treatment. And let your regular vet know who the pet sitter is, just in case.
(not that I'm OC[P]D or anything!)

Thanks! That's great advice. I left the vets name, number, address and care credit card! Guess I should have alerted the vet too! I'll be home tomorrow...crossing my fingers that everyone is ok! Then, I leave again in 1 week! :-( I hate leaving my babies.
