Kipper 2 months diabetic and new to FDMB

Hi all,

Sorry about the previous post. Kipper is helping. Just wanted to introduce us and let you know how helpful you have all be in helping me understand what is going on with Kipper. Finally got spreadsheet and profile set up. Just not sure how to include them with my post. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome!

You're ahead of the game with a spreadsheet. Go to the User Control panel, choose Edit signature and add the urls for your spreadsheet and profile.

So we're nosey. What insulin? What dose? What do you feed Kipper? It sounds like you are hometesting?

We are all paying it forward by helping newbies because we received such wonderful support when we were new and terrified. Feel free to ask questions and ask for resources or just come on to whine when you are overwhelmed. We have all been there - several times!

Kipper is on Lantus- currently 4bid- but we have gotten some low #'s the las 2 days so (in conjunction with our vet) have dropped back to 3bid. I have home tested since about 2 weeks after dx (8/6). We started out with Purina DM dry. After reading everything here and on Dr. Lisa's site I considered a raw diet ( my daughter talked me out of that as I work full time, etc) so I have transitioned him to EVO Cat & Kitten exclusively. (Vet not happy, he wants Purina DM) but you don't alway get what you want. ;-)

I am so happy to have found this board. It is interesting how may people think I am silly to "waste" the time and money on a 12 year old cat. A support system is just what I need.

Yes, I did check Janet & Binky's chart. I have transitioned Kipper to Evo Cat & Kitten canned and that is all he gets. I think the canned has made a really big difference since before the switch his numbers were rarely if ever below 350. Now I am starting to get some pretty low numbers.

Food makes a big difference (just like human diabetics). Some here have reported a drop of 100+ just from changing the diet to low carb wet food.
 
I do have a couple of questions. The vet is having me use glucose confetti in the litter box again. We did this early on. Now I am getting no color change at all. The vet had me bring in a urine sample this am. I have asked if this is something to be concerned about but haven't gotten a specific answer. Does anyone have any experience with this.

Also, I failed to mention in the profile that Kipper has periodontal disease but is scheduled for a cleaning and exam on 10/26.
 
No glucose in his urine is a good thing, it means that throughout the entire period between 'pees' his blood glucose levels did not go above renal threshold. But that is all it means, and that is why we test blood glucose levels so we have a more accurate idea of where levels are.

If he has gum disease and is getting a dental, you may find that his blood glucose levels decline even further, so please be vigilant :)
 
Welcome to the board! I see that you are already testing and switched from the dry to wet food, which may have had something to do with the low numbers you have been getting ... that dry food is horrible for diabetics.
I just have to laugh about your comment that the vet is not happy haha_smiley ... I think that Kipper is YOUR cat, not the vet's, so whatever you choose to feed is YOUR choice. There are plenty of food choices in Binky's list that provide you with the carb levels, so you can try some variety if Kipper wants.

Now about the dental, you will want to ask your vet the time the work will be done and see what the vet suggests for the insulin dose on the am of the dental and also the pm.

I gave Shadoe a reduced shot the nite before the dental, then skipped the morning shot. Her pm shot brought her very low - with the anesthesia, often you will see lower numbers following the work.
