Ketone Testing - help

Hi all,

We are having a really tough time at the moment and this week my boy was hospitalised for DKA. It was very scary and continues to be.
I need to test for ketones but he doesn't use a litter try so I need to test his blood. Can anyone recommend a metre for this?
Thank you
Simone

I used a keto -mojo which I got on Amazon. I bought it like 5 years ago do not sure if there’s something better. There’s a few new brands there note that I didn’t see before, and most have good reviews. Just make sure whichever one you get it doesn’t take more than a 0.5 size blood sample, and make sure they also sell the test strips.

Hi Simone and Stanley, I’m so sorry Stanley has been ill with DKA.
Is he home yet?
Once he gets home you will need to do the following to ensure that ketones dont reappear
  • Feed 1 1/2 times as many calories as he would normally eat. Offer small snacks every couple of hours. If he is at all nauseated ask the vet for some cerenia and ondansetron. Ondansetron is better for nausea and can be given 3 times a day.
  • Don’t skip any insulin doses. If the BG is lower than normal, stall, dont feed and test again in 20 minutes and post and ask for help. I can see you have been skipping many doses. This is not a good idea with DKA so recently. I see you have reduced the dose to 1 unit. Let’s see if that lets you give both a and pm doses.
  • Test at least once daily for ketones. More often if traces appear. Post ketones results in spreadsheet.
  • Encourage extra fluids. If he will let you, add a teaspoon of warm water to all the snacks.
Post every day for assistance and guidance.
The first couple of weeks at home is very important to maintain what I have listed above so he can fully recover.

Thank you Bron, this advice is really useful. Stan responded really well to treatment and came home the next day but i am terrified of it happening again.
He has been consistent with his insulin since last summer when he came out of remission but I just can't get his numbers down.
I have realised that I have not been sharing the most up to date spreadsheet so I will get that updated and ask the group for more advice.
Thanks again for your help. Simone
