Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012) - The Flower Condo

Status
Not open for further replies.
Greetings, Lantus Land! It's been quite a week since Karre's 1 Month OTJ Caturday Condo!

His Majesty Karre the Emperor of Basically Everything sends his commendations especially to those Lantus Cats and Beans who have seen themselves through certain cycles of the distinctly dramatic persuasion. He took it upon himself to supervise Jane the Lowly Minion while she went back over the past week or so and picked out a few LL Highlights. Here they are:

Claudia/Rocket's 6th September Update Condo, in which LL gathers together to send support, love and vines to our dear Claudia, whose legendary furboy Rocket may be readying himself for his next journey... Claudia and Rocket, you are in our hearts and prayers.

Lisa/Leo's 7th Semptember Condo, in which for everyone's learning pleasure we find a lively dramatization of how to steer cycles with foods of various carb percentages. His Royal Highness *personally* supervised this one. And there's some rhyming. Just saying.

Alexa/Reuben's 6th September Condo, in which there is *another* food discussion regarding the pros and cons of using high-sugar carb options (honey/syrup/karo), adding them to SLC home-made food (SLC= Super Low Carb, ca. 1-2%), and possible alternatives to high-sugar additions to up the carb percentage of home-made SLC foods.

Barb/Checkers's 6th September Condo, in which Checks dramatically demonstrates the importance of spot checks throughout - he threw Barb a late LOW drop to 30s! Great catch, Barb!

Kristin/Abby's 6th September Condo. Returning from the Falls and recovering from DKA, we welcome you both back to LL!

Lyresa/KT's 7th September Condo, in which we rejoice with Lyresa, who won't need eye surgery after all!

Jenn/Tidus's 7th September Condo, in which we realize that vets do *not* automatically know the best way to use Lantus just because they are professionals. This condo reminds us of that some vets don't know about the dangers of dose hopping, HUGE dosecreases, and so on. Thank you, Jenn, and good luck with the TR-protocol-based 2.25u increase.

Dale/Max's 4th September Condo, in which Max is seen flirting shamelessly with a reduction - but then, compare that condo to Dale/Max's 7th September Condo, in which he shows yet again that while he'll flirt, he won't quite follow through just yet. Read it for some suggested ideas on how to allow a reduction to declare itself by adjusting the feeding routine when the bean can test, is confident, and has data as well as experience to do so.

In other LL overview news: Tamara/Ella's recovery from Ella's dental is going ahead - keep it up, girls! Carla/Furball have been seen dipping into greens - Hooray! Helen/Rosy are keeping on keeping on, doing Rosy's dose dance - hang in there! Ann/Maggie are coping with Maggie's recent DX of megacolon - good going, you guys! Jill/Charlie are showing some great progress, kitty and bean alike - great to see! Mike/BJ are still battling BJ's higher-than-normal numbers while BJ's infection is likely still clearing and the ABs are lasting for few more days - Chin up, lads, you'll get back on track! Wendy/Neko showed some pretty, pretty greens at now 1 month post-SRT - Fantastic to see this, you guys!! Shai/Fitzel are still dealing with the Pirate's reluctance to be tested and are still considering an animal communicator - any progress on that front, Shai? Tracy/Leo are at a little over a month and a half after SRT now, and down to 9u, making lovely progress especially after Leo's bout of pancreatitis - Congratulations!! Melanie(/Racci) is doing splendidly at catching Racci's favoured drops into the 30s, and has been helping out wonderfully on LL - Thanks so much, Melanie, for so often being there to take over my hand-offs! Marje/Gracie continue on their mutual road to recovery - We're all rooting for you both, ladies! Rhiannon/Shadow are doing beautifully with all those great green numbers, and Rhiannon is doing a great job of sending alerts when a condo needs attention - Thanks, Rhiannon! Carl/Bob continue to be a wonderfully supportive, knowledgeable voice throughout FDMB - Thank you so much, Carl! Also, Linda of Linda and Bear Man has begun a very exciting new life adventure by starting her schooling and training to become a vet tech - Congrats on your BOS, Linda, and the very best of luck in your studies! (And salutation to my favourite rebel, Linda's cat Pinkerton! This one's for you!)

For those of you who are not mentioned by name this time - Fear not, most likely you will be next time :-D LL being the wonderfully extensive community that it has grown into, I simply can't manage to name every kitty and bean in one condo. But like many other oldtimers, I do see you all and try to stop by everyone over the course of a week. And remember that any and all of you are invited, ANY TIME, to pop into the most current Caturday Condo (or send a PM) if you'd like me to stop round and take a look or just give some extra support.

And now for some WCRs from our Hout Bay Pride. His Majesty continues as regally as ever, ruling with gentle paw despite the occasional stern glance when one of his Lowly Minions does not perform all duties perfectly. He is, of course, purrfectly justified in this - after all, Lowly Minion Jane's infractions include being remiss by a full minute and a half when having been commanded to open a can of tuna, as well as having failed only this morning to open the sliding door into the garden and thus forcing His Royal Highness to use the *catflap* (perish the thought!)... To name but a few.

Even so, His Majesty is the picture of health (literally - photos are forthcoming after this). All 5 Ps are in place, and he has given us a few blissful days of wholly anxiety-free green (including today's 5.1/92). King Henry is beginning to engage in outdoor games with everyone, chasing reeds dragged across the lawn, pouncing Luca and Magpie, and keeping on coming into his own after now a little over 2 months in his new home here with us. Queen Magpie has taken him aside a few times to instruct him in the requisite feline art of BMC (bean mind control), and Henry is showing himself to be an avid pupil. Lowly Minion Jane finds herself being drawn to the fridge with an urge to slice the specially roasted duck breast thinly, warm it, and offer it to our resident Coon Cat King  Luca is up to his usual tricks, racing up and down trees and pouncing anything and everything that he happens upon during his garden adventures. Everybody's happy

In case this little anecdote escaped LL attention in the last condo, a little re-run: Lowly Minion Jane recently caused King Henry to be very concerned indeed for her mental health, since he saw her *voluntarily* submerged in WATER! She decided to open this year's swimming season early, right after August, which is the coldest month of the year down here  So, she went swimming in the 17° pool after training, and came out the colour of her favourite coffee mug: lobster-red! She ought to have known better, not least because Henry didn't need *another* reason to become concerned - he had to go to the vet on the 6th to have his right ear checked. He kept scratching at it and shaking his head, and folding the ear downwards. They had to sedate him, poor baby, to take a closer look. No foreign body, but a little scratch - maybe from a bit of brotherly rough-and-tumble with Luca, oran encounter with the neighbour's tomcat, maybe from a pesky twig out during a garden adventure, hard to say. My money's on a little kitty spat with the neighbour's cat - he has a small patch of missing fur under his eye. The vet put him on Synulox for a week to ward off an infection in that ear. (On the drive to the vet, I promised Henry that I'd make him his very favourite treat, pan-fried (and then skinned) duck breast. Sure enough, when he got home, still a bit groggy, he went and sat down by the fridge, meowing reproachfully at me. I swear he knows the words "duck breast" by now  He got his promised treat, of course. I was a very sneaky bean and hid his first dose of ABs in a piece of duck breast, too, but he didn't mind. He finished the whole thing, about a palm-size! And then he went with his little round belly and napped on the art chair. Gotta love it.)

And now for the customary visual section of Karre's Caturday Condo - a few pictures from our catwalk this morning. Enjoy, and Thank You for visiting! Do post if and when you have the time - any and all WCRs and WBRs are welcome!

Happy Caturday, all! Hugs,
Jane.

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Lovely pictures, and a wonderful condo post. Karre is such a handsome little man. I love a tuxedo kitty (I have 3... all related to each other). I hope that you're having a good Saturday so far. :)

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Thank you Jane. I love the Reader's Digest Condensed Version of the week's condos, as I miss too many.
Not enough time in the day, to read them all, much as I'd like to.

Have a wonderful day.
Scritches to the Emporer and his subjects. :-D

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

~Sigh~

A lurker no more.....

Wonderful recap! And I adore the pictures. Such beautiful kitties. I dare not tell Poopy about the Emperor, though, unless I can get him to understand different realms.

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

What a wonderful Caturday report! It's so nice to get a glimpse of what went on in a variety of condos throughout the week. There is so much to learn from each other so thanks for supplying us with the Coles Notes :-D version

So glad to hear that Karre is doing wonderfully and back to his old antics. You're cats and garden look as beautiful as ever and I'm happy to hear that King Henry is on the mend from his ear issue. I bet the duck breast definitely helped with his healing, emotionally at least:)

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Wow, Jane, awesome condo and recap of what's happening around LL and beautiful pics, as always of your family and surroundings. Thank you for your mention of Maggie and all the cheers and sparklies and support and vines in our condo. Congratulations to Karre's OTJ and how well he is doing at the Falls. It gives us hope that someday.... Maggie is still swooning over Henry's comment about her and hopes one day to make a trip to South Africa. Have a wonderful weekend,

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Thank you, Angela, Barb, Teresa, Tamara, and Ann! It's so lovely to see you in here, and I'm thrilled you're enjoying the LL Highlights and the photos  Looks like Leo and Reuben are gunning for another mention in those LL Highlights as we speak  Settle down, boys!

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

It's good to hear that Karre is still doing well, and all the other kitties. I hope Henry's ear heals quickly. I love the pictures of the play fight. You captured it perfectly.

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Thanks Carla, what a lovely compliment! I think our camera also has some kind of "sports" setting, but I tend to just leave it on the general setting on catwalks. I'm thrilled you like the photos so much!
Jane

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Jane Thanks for another great Caturday condo! The recaps are really nice since I dont make it around to visit all the condos each day. Beautiful catwalk pictures too! Have a great a day.

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Jane,
Another amazing condo!
I would like to personally thank Prince Luca for the reminder. Today, I really needed to hear his advice.

Hugs,
Carl

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Hi Jane,

As always, I loved your photos. Your fur family is so precious. What could be more fun to look at then happy loved cats! Then when you pair it with a beautiful garden, well that's just bound to please.

Thank you for the mention. That's very sweet of you. I never mind helping. It's just passing it on. That Rascal Racci is laying in wait for me trying to catch me unawares again running high blues, ready to dive into the 30's so have to test again but I did want to run over here first.

Love the catch up! Between your news and Liz's I can get the news about so many of our friends! It's great!

TTYL

Hugs,
Melanie & Racci

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Your Majesty Karre. Queen Magpie. King Henry and Prince Luca. A swash and buckle day if I do mention it myself. Being THE Pirate of the 7 Seas can be dauntIng. Savvy? But we are pleased to present the Royal Court some shineys and sparklelies.
(as Pirate Fitz dramatically slashes open a roped and tied burlap sack to reveal a tumble of diamond, emerald, ruby, spinel, tsaverite, kunzite and south sea pearls pretties)
All this treasure for a place at the Emperors table for Caterday Festivities.

(aside by crew mommy- thanks for the great condo updates and for the mention of the Pirate. We are currently on the hunt for a piratical animal communicator with a few feelers out. Definately worth it to find out what's going on in that little fuzz head!)

Love the pics - and dont be surprised if the Pirate Sails by the Cape someday. Be on the lookout for black sails.

Arrrggggggghhhhh.....
Shai and The Pirate Fitz

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Thanks Emperor Karre for the splendid account of a week at court. And please commend your court scribe, Jane, for her excellent attention to all of the events in the land--Lantus Land, that is.

Love your condos, Jane, and the lovely pictures of the kitties and the plants in your garden. Hope you will enjoy the upcoming week. Thanks also for all your help in LL.

Hugs from us,

Ella & Rusty

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

We all enjoyed the emperor's musings-- it's good to meet you all! I think we just missed your 2nd round on Lantus as Simey went OTj in June!

Loved it! :!:

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Thanks so much, Leslie, Carl, Melanie, Shai and Pirate Fitz, Ella, and Kim! I'm glad there's, as it seems, something for everyone in Karre's Caturday Condos  I've taken to bookmarking some potential "LL Highlights" threads and saving them in a separate links-folder in preparation for the LL Overview  I feel bad because I can't get to everybody, but I'll keep trying to rotate so that all of our dear LL kitties and beans are mentioned eventually.

If I may, I have a question, too - I'll enlarge the text to make sure it catches someone's eye:

Have any of you ever treated your cat with ear drops?

(Carla, I remember Furball was just getting over an ear infection at the end of last month, and she didn't get ear drops that time, but have you ever used any?) I'm a bit worried about our darling King Henry. Though he was seen by the vet on Friday, and his ears were clear except for one small scratch in the right ear canal, most likely from a claw, and though he was given ABs to ward off infection, he doesn't seem to be improving... All 5 Ps are in place, but he's shaking his head vigorously every few minutes, and folding *both* ears (I suspect some irritation from the otoscope) down wards, and periodically he just sits down hunched up as if he were very unhappy with the state of affairs... No sensitivity to touch, no shrinking away, no symptoms suggestive of localized (or other) pain, great appetite, no unusual odour from the ear(s). Our vet is open for 1 hour on Sundays... I am toying with the idea of calling and asking if there aren't any drops we could quickly pick up and start giving him - I'm thinking he feels an itching sensation that's making him shake his head, and if there was something that could alleviate that, I would love to be able to have it. Otherwise we could call on Monday. But if I could go get something today to help with the irritation and make him feel better, I would love that. Any thoughts would be so much appreciated. Thanks!

Hugs,
Jane

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Did somebody say roast duck breast??? Num num! I'm late to the party but it's still Saturday for me :-D

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

RE: Eardrops in Cats

Jane, Furball has had ear drops in the past for ear infections. So has one of by other cats (Baby) just recently. They were both different types of drops. Furball's ear infection has been on and off for most of the year. My previous vet gave me Baytril/Micazole/Cort-Astrin for Furball. I had to give her a dropper full every 12 hours for several months. I hate using a dropper because you can't just squeeze it once and get all of the liquid out. I usually end up getting a syringe and using it instead. Baby was shaking her head several times a day and was diagnosed with an ear infection when I took her to the vet. The vet gave her Mometmax. This was given as 4 drops in her ear once a day for one week. It cleared up her infection. Although holding a cat long enough to get 4 drops in is tricky sometimes. I hope you can get something for Henry's ear and it heals quickly. If he is shaking his head, I would take him to the vet or it might get worse and be more difficult to treat.

Is it possible kitties itch as they heal as do we hoomans? If that's the case, (I know he's already getting the ABs to fight off infection) how about adding a bit of antibiotic ointment with pain killer in it? Available at any pharmacy. The painkiller part is obvious, but the ointment part would help sooth the scabbing process, too. Worth a thought. ;-)

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Hi Jane! What a wonderful post - loved it all. Life is good for everyone there - YAY! Thanks too for the photos - excellent!

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Sounds delicious to me as well! I recall seeing the idea of lightly drying small chicken pieces in a low oven and then frying them. Maybe we'll try something like that here.

Love the Condo this week, especially the Royal Family Frolicking shots! What a handsome family. We continue to be honored at the personal attention we received from the Emperor and wish him long life and the continued homage from his vast and adoring kingdom of kittehs and beans.

Thanks for the mention of our wild adventures this week. Leo appears to be ensconced in the reds at the moment, with some pinks coming later on I'm sure. That means more recovery time for me! My brain is still spinning from the repeated adventures and lack of sleep, but then it made sense to me when I counted that he's earned 4 dose decreases in the last 7 days. No WONDER! Al Hail King Karre and his spectacular bean!

Re: Karre's Caturday Condo (8/9/2012)

Carla, thanks so much for that input, that really helps! And thanks, Teresa, for your thoughts, too.

Thanks, Mike, Michelle and Lisa! It's so sweet of you all to come by here and hang out! Karre is loving all the visits, too!

Henry will be going back to the vet tomorrow if they can't just let us pick up some drops to help with the itching and irritation. Vines are appreciated. He gets terrified when he has to go and be examined. My poor beautiful boy. Hopefully they can just give us drops without seeing him a second time.

Hugs
Jane

Lisa, I'll re-read your fab summary-condo tomorrow, I just realized you asked that I look it over for anything to add/amend etc. Great job!

HI Jane! I just wanted to make sure I hadn't said anything misleading in terms of taking care of a cat in a situation like that. I put up a disclaimer of course, but there may have been something you said that would be important to capture, too. I wanted to be accurate, because I know some folks bookmarked it. Glad you liked it tho - sometimes the writing bug hits and some fun humor comes out. CLEARLY you understand the writing bug! Have a great day!!!

Jane, that's a beautiful pic of the heart shaped flowers. I saw the pic earlier and had to return and admire.

Thank you, Ann! You inspired me to go out and take a few more photographs of the garden :-D Here they are.

Sir Karre - what a beautiful paradise you enjoy! Mama & Papa sure love their camera and it loves them too!

I'm a bit late Jane... ...am I forgiven if I bring you more flowers?

This isn't a very 'pretty' picture but the blooms are just beautiful:

BIG HUG!

Thank you, Teresa, Carl and Lyresa!

Carl, which flowers do you mean? The pink ones with yellow centres? I want to answer your question but I'm not certain which picture you mean!

Lyresa, thanks for the lovely flower picture! It's perfectly fine for you to visit the condo any day of the week. I just open Karre's condos on Saturdays as most folks tend to have some extra time then. But it's open to and and all, all week

Early to bed for us tonight. See you all tomorrow!
Hugs
Jane

Hi Jane! Wonderful pics and Karre Condo as per usual. Sorry we are late to the party, but we thought we’d stop in nonetheless :-D
Have a splendid week!

Yes, Jane, those! I was trying to figure out if the pink and the yellow were separate flowers, or both part of the same flower, so you've answered that question. But what are they? I want some!
We don't have many flowers on this island, because we can't "introduce non-native species" on the Park (except in our yards) so when we landscape around the park, we just add "more of the same", and it's mostly non-flowering and evergreen. Looks beautiful, but it's "boring" when you see it all day every day. Tourists love it, because they think they've entered Jurasic Park when they turn off the highway. But living surrounded by brown and green and sand makes one feel like they are a part of "camouflage world"
Carl

The emperor is fed pan fried duck breast made especially for him. OF COURSE he is with a title like "the emperor"!
Living the life of riley, that guy is.

I absolutely love the picture of him cuddling his little magpie. Also really like the one with all 3 of them (The Emperor, Magpie & King Henry) having a blast all together in what looks to be THE MOST gorgeous, flowering, South African yard ever.

And a pool too. I am living vicariously right now. Today I cycled to work with "rain pants" on. Typical rainy Amsterdam day. Rain is good for flowers too though so no complainin'.

Have a great one and keep OTJ buddy.
Over and out,
Charlie

Thanks, everyone! No worries, Donna - as I said earlier, Karre's condos are open all week, because I only open one per week so as not to add even more to LL's busy traffic! You're all welcome to post any day. Carl, those pink-and-yellow flowers are primroses - I hope you find some to plant in your garden, they really are such cheery little spots of colour! KT, how GREAT to see you posting, thank you so much for stopping by! Jill and Charlie, thanks for visiting; I'm so happy you enjoyed the photos!

Hugs,
Jane

Primroses are now on my list of things to do!

A ray of sunshine for all the beans...happy Tuesday!

Henry decides Play Time ought to continue on the grassy ground, and carefully plan his descent, only to take it in one lightning-fast jump in the end!

Henry switched to pouncing imaginary antelope, Luca gave us his patented "Who, me? Innocent little ME?"-Look - and proceeded to pounce the Queen!

When the Queen got the better of him, Luca went back to playing with Henry, who followed suit (and Luca)...

Oh, so fun to see the kitties playing. Someone can not only take pics of still life, but is pretty good with the moving life, too!

I especially love the pic of Henry looking directly at the camera just before the big leap to the ground. Looks like he's thinking "oh no, she's going to catch this on camera...I'd better get it right, or this is going to end up on LOLcats!"

Thank you Jane, beautiful moments to capture and share!

Carl
