Maybe Junior is exploring all the food options at home? I think I used the word "ravenous" more times in 2 months of Grayson's threads, than in the 50 preceding years! Needless to say, my guy was opening cabinets, tearing through plastic bags and cardboard boxes, opening an oak bread box to access cat treats that have been stored there for longer than he's been alive, canned goods, egg noodles... you name it! Last week he was making a casserole: Green beans, Cream of something soup, dry cheese packets (from Kraft Mac & Cheese)... What's up with that??? His starving appetite was a good sign, as it related to his ketones, but I'm not sure WHY he's been so hungry. Anything that wasn't nailed down... he was on it. He could smell dry kibble through three doors - and find the one crumb the dogs had missed!
This is primarily the reason I started feeding him every few hours. Otherwise, by +6 he was miserable and by +10, he'd have worked himself into such a fit that he'd throw up - mostly water, cuz the food was all en route. But he didn't need that. Honestly, I think Libby has it right... consistent meals at consistent intervals. Hershey wasn't snarfing food when he was here, and we've both been at it for about 2 months now. Of course he hadn't been much more than 12 pounds, I think she said. Grayson had been 21.6. He did NOT like to miss a meal.
That being said, he has gained back about a pound in the 2 months since he started his insulin, now weighing in at 13.4 pounds. He's still REALLY skinny around his butt/hips, but otherwise looks good. Hard to imagine that, w/ all the canned food he's eating, but I guess his metabolism is working, even if Mr. P is not!
Right now our record keeping is one of the most important things we can do. Be thorough - once we have enough data, we can do some analysis and see how our kitty responds to various stimuli. Good luck!
