This is the first time I get in contact . I'm a Brazilian cat owner worried about the possibility of his becoming a diabetic cat. for a while he is taking oral madication "glipizida" . His doctor insists on trying it before starting using insuline(lantus glargina). She firmily believes that it's necessary not to go sraight to insuline. Why do I say a possibility? Because it all started when he begun to treat his intestinal disease, taking cortisona ( prednisolona) and after almost two weeks his glicosis started to go up. His maximum has been 300 and the minimum 228 taking 5mg each 12 hours. We are about to start cortisone and it makes me nervous .
I also have Juanita( a 9-year-old female Persian). She is a pkd cat. Can you see may situation? At the moment the two of them are facing crisis. She is better now. She had cristals that fell down from the kidney and almost avoided the passage of the urine. When I noticed her "anorexia" I run to the vet and started the strugle for Juanita's life. She is doing very well .The last images have shown the cristal almost reaching her bladder.
If you undestand you help me, please, may me we can share important experiences.
goodbye

Welcome, Lybia -

You have found a wonderful place with lots of information! My older cat, Hershey, was diagnosed with diabetes in Nov, 2011 and has been on insulin (ProZinc) since Jan, 2012. I'm sorry I don't know anything about your cats conditions, but will see if I can get someone who does. It's pretty late here (12:35am) and the board is usually quiet by now, so it may be tomorrow morning (here) before you hear from anyone.

In the meantime, you can use the search bar at the top of the page to learn all kinds of things and maybe even help answer some of your questions.

Take care and know that someone will be along shortly -

Libby (and Hershey, too!)

Welcome to the best place to help your kitty. I'm not sure about about that
glipizide (sp?) stuff so I will let others help with that. I just wanted to say welcome and hope more eyes see your thread.

Hi Lybia! Welcome!

Here's the information about glipizide that I posted in the linked thread:

Glipzide is not recommended for use in cats. It might work for a short period, but it ends up over taxing the pancreas and worsening the diabetes for the long term. See p. 218 (4) of the AAHA diabetes guidelines where it states:

Oral hypoglycemic drugs, combined with diet change, are only indicated if owner refuses insulin therapy or is considering euthanasia. These agents are not considered appropriate for long-term use.

Insulin therapy, on the other hand, allows the pancreas to rest and heal, and with the correct type of insulin (Lantus, Levemir, or Prozinc) and a low carb, canned diet, in the majority of newly diagnosed cases sends the cat into remission (insulin no longer needed). The glipzide only postpones the need for insulin, and once it does do further damage to the pancreas you will have no chance of it healing and getting your cat into remission. At that point he will likely need insulin for the rest of his life.

This is the article that discusses the damage glipizide can do to the pancreas in cats: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1885761/. Here's another link that discusses its efficacy in cats: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=627.

What are you feeding him right now? Are you feeding a low carb, canned food? Dry food is very high in carbohydrates and some lucky cats do not need insulin from diet change alone. However, most do need insulin for a short time before reaching diet-controlled remission. The good news is that when the proper insulin (Lantus, Levemir, or Prozinc) is coupled with diet change and home testing, cats have very high remission rates, and usually do not need insulin permanently. However, these remission rates are only valid if you start insulin therapy immediately. If you wait do start insulin therapy after a prolonged period on glipizide, there will likely be too much damage done to the pancreas at that point to achieve remission and he'll need insulin permanently.

Just stopping in to say hello and welcome! You've found a treasure trove of information and great people with more knowledge than the best med centers anywhere! It's great to have you here!

Hello, thank you very much anyway. Don't worry, many people know about glipizida and I'm convinced that I have to stop it now and start Lantus, it's one of the best insulines.
I'm sure that this is really the best place I could find for information and help. I've been trying to post a picture of teofilo and Juanita so that you can appreciate my special beauties. Can you help . How can I do this?
