I have been using 1/2 cc syringes U 40 1/2 needle 29 gauge for Fluffy, but I find that these do not have 1/2 measurements. Which one has the 1/2 units? Thanks
 
I believe the 1/2 unit markings are only available in 3/10 cc U 100 syringes. There are several brands, but here is a link to the ones I used:

You can use U 100 syringes with U 40 insulin, you just need to use a conversion table. You can actually get much finer dosing that way.

U40 insulin syringes are not available with half unit markings.

Only 3/10 cc (30 unit) U100 insulin syringes are available with half unit markings.

Hope posted the link to the conversion chart to use U40 insulin with U100 insulin syringes. It's very important to use the chart so that your cat gets the right amount of insulin.

U100 3/10 cc half unitmarked insulin syringes come in a few different needle gauges and lengths (some combination of 30 or 31 gauge and 1/2 inch or 5/16 inch). If you prefer 1/2 inch 29 gauge, like the U40 insulin syringes you are currently using, try these Monoject ones: http://www.americandiabeteswholesale.co ... 289_88.htm
 
I am confused about the conversion chart. The bag of needles I have says for U-40 insulin. The first line I hope is 1 unit and 2 line 2 Units. It would be easier for me if it had 1/2 marks because it is hard to judge where the 1/2 unit is. What do you think would be easier for me :?

The conversion chart is only used if you want to use U100 insulin syringes with U40 insulin.

If you are using U40 insulin syringes with U40 insulin, you do not need to use the chart.

As said above, there are no U40 insulin syringes with half unit markings.

You can eyeball where the half unit is with your U40 insulin syringes.

Or do what many other U40 insulin users do: buy half unit marked U100 insulin syringes and use the conversion chart.

If you need 1.5 units of U40 insulin, you would measure to just between the 3.5 unit and 4 unit line of the U100 insulin syringe.
 
well, this explains why i couldn't find syringes with 1/2 unit marking today. i drove to 2 pharmacies, then to a feed store, then to a veterinary clinic.

i'll have to go back to these links and see if i can understand the conversion stuff.

It would be 3.75 which you would have to eyeball or you could just do a 1.40 Prozinc (3.5 units on the U100 syringe) or a 1.60 Prozinc (4 units on a U100 syringe).

You are correct.


Just do this easy math (use a calculator if you need to):

U-40 units times 2.5 = MARK number on U-100 syringe.

Examples:

0.2 units of U-40 times 2.5 = 0.5 unit-mark on a U-100 syringe
0.4 units of U-40 times 2.5 = 1.0 unit-mark on a U-100 syringe
0.6 units of U-40 times 2.5 = 1.5 unit mark on a U-100 syringe
0.8 units of U-40 times 2.5 = 2.0 unit mark on a U-100 syringe
1.0 units of U-40 times 2.5 = 2.5 unit-mark on a U-100 syringe
1.2 units of U-40 times 2.5 = 3.0 unit-mark on a U-100 syringe
1.4 units of U-40 times 2.5 = 3.5 unit-mark on a U-100 syringe
1.5 units of U-40 times 2.5 = 3.75 unit-mark on a U-100 syringe <<<< still difficult to do.
1.6 units of U-40 times 2.5 = 4.0 unit-mark on a U-100 syringe
1.8 units of U-40 times 2.5 = 4.5 unit-mark on a U-100 syringe
2.0 units of U-40 times 2.5 = 5.0 unit-mark on a U-100 syringe

If you hold a U-40 syringe up to a U-100 syringe, you will see the the
"1" unit mark of a U-40 syringe lines up with the "'2.5" unit-mark on
the U-100 syringe.

When using U-100 syringes with U-40 insulin, we work in increments
of .2 units of U-40. 1.4 unit dose or 1.6 unit dose not 1.5 unit dose.

That way you can easily use your U-100 syringes with 1/2-unit marks to
make small dosing adjustments of U-40 insulin.

Always state your dose as the TRUE DOSE of U-40 insulin (the number before multiplying
by 2.5). Never state your dose as the unit-mark you fill the U-100 syringe to.
Always speak and record your doses as the TRUE DOSE. Very important if you
ever need to take the cat to the ER, and when talking to your vet, and here on FDMB, also.

Sorry! For 1.5 units, you measure between 3.5 and 4 units on the U100 insulin syringe. I fixed the typo in my post above. I was distracted by my fussy civie at the time and misread the chart.
