3.5 units of Lantus is a LOT mary so please post once you get that meter (asap-hopefully).. If you need help walking through how to poke the ear to get the blood give me a shout I'm happy to take a break here and call and talk you through it. I was REALLY nervous first time -well first few times I did it but then after I did it.. I was saying- geezzz that was soo easy.. why was I so nervous.. you will most likely be the same way.. get the meter asap- your cat's health depends on it since 3.5 units is definitely a lot- at least from what I've read on this site. The sooner you start taking the BG numbers the road to recovery is what you will be on. :) :) :)

purrs, meows and cat rubs coming your way for support!!!!

Hi, Mary,

You now have a very experienced resource to call on close to home (Rebecca, the moderator). Please take advantage of her generous offer to pm or email her. By the way, video of your local tornadoes (sp.?) made our morning news here in Canada. We are busy getting ready for our Thanksgiving holiday this weekend.

It is good to hear that the diet change is helping, not worsening, Cherry's diarrhea. Are you still giving 3 units of Lantus, or did the new vet change the dose? Have you managed to get hold of a glucometer yet? You will find lots of help here with home testing and diet suggestions.

Please keep us up to date on how Cherry and you are doing.

With best regards, Michele and Kelly

Re: Update on Cherry

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't been back to my discussion thread: we had some excitement with tornadoes in Arizona last week! (unheard of!) No damage, just power losses and hard rain for several days.

Hope it's OK to share an update on Cherry, my 13 year old cat who went down to 6 pounds and also had those loose stools. Glad to share that Cherry seems to be even more alert and lively! I have her on all wet food now. She likes Purina DM. Doesn't like Natural Balance though which the vet recommended. She is also eating Fancy Feast, which I know is not the best. Likes chicken classic flavor especially.

She is still very hungry every 2 hours or so. Also the loose stools are less frequent although still twice or three times a day (before it was twice as often).

The new vet wants to try some prescription types of Hill's Science Diet food for her. I am supposed to pick them up Wed. or Thurs. whenever they arrive. Oh, and I tried Wellness wet food for her. She ate some of the kitten and chicken flavors two days ago but is now turning up her nose at this brand.

She seems to be drinking less: still urinating a lot but not outside the box anymore. The vet wants to try Flagyl for the inflammatory bowel disease. I still wonder if the high blood sugar could have set off her digestive problems.

I look at her and am so grateful I didn't follow the first vet's advice to have her euthanized!! She even rolled over on her back and let me play with her and pat her stomach today: like the old Cherry.

Hope it's OK to keep everyone posted! The key thing will be to have her regain some weight again and get back up over 6 pounds where she has been hovering. I can't begin to thank everyone on this board for your magnificent help and support! Warmest regards, mary d :)
