Hey Everyone!
My dad has graciously come in to watch our sugar kitty while we are gone overnight. Is there a pre-set of instructions I can give him about what to do, the proper procedure?
Suggestions on what I should leave him with?
Jess

Provide a reference syringe with a line on it to make sure he can measure the dose correctly.
If he is willing to test, teach him how.
It could be helpful to print the info on recognizing and managing hypoglycemia.
Prepare a written authorization to treat if something happens and he feels a vet visit is needed.
Name, address, and phone number of regular vet and emergency veterinary services.

And tell him to have fun - play, cuddle, etc. It isn't always about the diabetes!

With Prozinc you can leave pre-filled syringes. I do with my substitute beans. Fern is on a sliding scale so I leave a few small shots, a majority of normal shots a a few high shots. I'm also on my 3rd vial of meds. I put water into the first vial and have made them a trainer in case they have to fill a syringe.

My parents bring Fern into the half bath for his testing/shot vs me doing it in the living room so that he can't go far if he is not in a cooperative mode. I also make sure that they have an uncoded meter for testing so that there is no way they would have to re-code.

These are the insulin instructions i leave my sitter. I only use one like once a year and i always have them come over before i leave to practice giving shot.

Thanks everyone for your help!
My dad came and trying to get my kitty used to him was a DISASTER. I mean, it would have been easier to find Atlantis than to get my kitty to cooperate with my dad. After 2 hours of attempting to get my dad trained, lots of screaming (on both sides ) (I have vowed that I will *never* again allow myself to hear my kitty scream in horror like he did and not run to save him) I made the executive decision to have my dad take the kitty to the vet twice a day for his reading, shot, and medication.
He was much more cooperative getting into the cage than ever let my dad handle him. And it took the stress off my dad, who basically was in a panic attack the entire two days we were gone over the idea of Mister getting a hypo event. (I told him he had never had one and to relax, but that didn't happen).
This was the worst experience of my life. I just hope the stress we inflicted on Mister didn't effect his health. :-/
Today he is resting in the sun and listening to the birds out back.

We just went away for two days and opted to board her at the vet. We would have been paranoid otherwise and would have had to get a pretty sitter to do the shot. Plus we have 6 other cats and would have been afraid of a stranger injecting the wrong cat or not finding her or something.
