ciao a tutti.
grazie
federica

Hello everyone.
I would like to ask you for advice. After 10 days in hospital for ketoacidosis, I brought my cat Luther home. I have to give two doses of insulin lantus of 1 unit a day.
these are the

values: Sunday at 09 am pre insulin 417, dosed. Evening 09.00 pm 321, dosed.
Monday at 09 am pre insulin 225, dosed. evening 09:00 pm 151, no dose!
Tuesday at 09 pre insulin 338, dosed : evening 09:00 pm 115 not dosed!
Wednesday (today) pre insulin 392 made dose what
do you think these values are? is blood glucose too high in the morning? how do I reduce these values in the morning and get a Flat curve?
luther does not have much appetite, I have to feed it with the syringe and eats Purina proplan DM damp.
thank you

you federica

Hi Federica & Luther and welcome to FDMB.

I am glad to see you are home testing and lantus is a very good insulin for cats. Many cats do not like prescription diets and they are not always as great as the vet wants us to believe they are. We have a link to food charts that my help you find a lower carb food that Luther may like. Many members feed their cats either Fancy Feast or Friskies canned foods. The pate flavors are generally lower in carbs. Here is the link to access them Links to FOOD CHARTS | Feline Diabetes Message Board - FDMB. You want to look for foods that are 10% or less in carbs. It is important that Luther eats, especially after being diagnosed with DKA. You may also need to ask your vet for a appetite stimulant for him.

Did they do any bloodwork to check if there are any infections? That will also contribute to higher glucose levels. If he has one, his glucose levels probably will begin to drop as it is cleared up.

I am so glad browsers have translation functionality. ;)

‎thank you for your support Lisa. Luther unfortunately never ate damp. he's always refused it, he just eats dry. Since becoming diabetic (2 months ago) I have given the royal diabetic canin with 24% slow release carbohydrates. Now to make it eat well I have to blend and use the syringe otherwise eat little! from previous biochemical analyses there are no signs of infections going on. Bilirubin around 2 - ph ok- ketones ok. Can this high blood sugar in the morning and low in the evening cause damage? he still pees a lot. the doctor gave me nutribound as nutritional support.‎

It will take some time for his body to adjust to being on insulin. You are doing the right thing by skipping the dose when it is lower. Another option is to try lowering the dose to 1/2 unit to see if that levels the glucose readings more. He will continue peeing more until his glucose levels are regulated.

Some cats need encouragement to switch over to a canned food diet. You could try sprinkling a few pieces of dry food on top or better, a low carb treat such as freeze dried chicken. As he gets used to eating the canned food, you can reduce the toppings.

@lutero

Li conosci?
