Impact of Missed Shots

For Jack

Hi, my cat Jack is going to be switching to Lantus. I am just waiting on it to arrive (hopefully by Saturday). Currently, he is on Vetsulin.

I am trying to figure out what the best schedule is going to be for me when it comes to treating Jack with Lantus. Long story short my schedule is rather inconsistent right now so I'm trying to come up with times to give him his shots that will have the fewest disturbances. Right now, that looks like it'd be 6am and 6pm. Once a week though I will be gone from the early afternoon until close to midnight. I have to drive 1.5 hours away for a class. This is going to be the case until the end of April.

So my question/concern is - what would the impact on his treatment be if once a week he didn't get his shot?

I do potentially have someone that will be able to give him his shots but this will only be the case until March :\.

Honestly, worst case scenario I might just take him to class with me :x. Luckily, he likes car rides but that might be kind of awkward and I'm not sure the professor will approve.

Hi, welcome to L/L Land. We all do what we can do, sometimes we do have to skip, but if there is any way though that you can avoid skipping shots, it would be best. Every time a shot is skipped the shed ( the reserve that builds up in the body)gets depleted and it can take several days for to get rebalanced. This reserve is what makes Lantus so much more even than other insulins. If you can't find anyone who can give the shot for you I'd see about taking Jack along. I took Tess w/ me when I had class over an hour away, but luckily I was the instructor. Luckily you say Jack likes to travel, Tess did NOT!

I agree with Ann - you can make it work for you. If someone else can give the shot, even til march - super. if you have to skip, it's not the end of the world and you can work with it. if you want to take him along, there's another option.

welcome to Lantus/Lev Land! Keep asking questions and we'll be glad to teach you what you need to know to help your sweet Jack!
