I need help desperately!

My 6 year old cat Torrmund was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus almost 2 weeks ago. He had started loosing significant weight and muscle mass very quickly. Our vet has started him on Vetsulin (started at 2 units twice a day, then bumped to 4 units twice a day and bumped again to 6 units twice a day.) he is currently on the 6 units now but his glucose readings are still irregular and high. I’ve expressed concern and my vet explained that this is a process.

Torrmund is currently on fancy feast pate 2 times daily. The vet recommended a high protein, low carbohydrate diet. He is constantly crying for more food and is constantly hungry.

I am checking his blood sugars at home 4-5 times a day and he just had his first glucose curve this past Friday. That is when the vet increased his vetsulin to 6 units twice a day.

I’m at my wits end and I don’t know what to do. I’m so new to this and I feel so overwhelmed. Any help, suggestions or information is so appreciated!

Welcome to the forum! I'm sorry to hear it's been stressful, but I want to reassure you that there's a ton of info here to help you! I definitely recommend reading through some of the stickies in the threads and setting up a spreadsheet so members can take a look at the numbers.

Personally, I'd recommend feeding him more right now, especially while his blood sugar is whack. When it mellows out, he'll become less ravenous, but for now, his body can't process that food correctly. One meal with each shot and then smaller meals throughout the day to keep him safe! (I will admit to being less familiar with vetsulin. It's less used; lantus and proznic are both more common and my cat uses Lantus specifically)

Ask questions wherever they come up! There are no dumb questions and it's soooo worth it to see your cat improve.

Not to worry,.we all have felt very overwhelmed when we hear Feline Diabetes, but the great news is that it is very manageable. You are at a good start with Fancy Feast Pates, between 0-10% carbs , however, Vetsulin, also known as Caninsulin is a dog insulin it hits the cat hard and fast 6 units is a lot of insulin, the best insulins for cats are Lantus and ProZinc they are a 12-hour insulin and gentle on a cat, are you are home testing,?is important to test prior to shots to avoid hypoglycemia, also testing 3-4 times a day is recommended including 3-4 small meals or snacks during the day is important to keep the insulin in check, has the vet tested for Ketones? A curve is simply testing every 2 hours for 1 cycle (12 hours) a curve at the vet will only cause for your cat to stress causing higher glucose levels and an unnecessary dose increase, many members use the ReliOn meter and strips (Walmart) or any other human meter, no need to spend on a pet meter, please keep posting
