Ok here we go again... My 11 yr old male cat has reached the end of the Vestsulin bottle (which he has tolerated very well) and now my vet has prescribed Humulin NPH. I am not comfortable with this and have an appointment this pm to see about getting a prescription for PZI. I think he'll do this as he has seen a dramatic change - reduced insulin amount and overall health - in my cat since switching to canned food. My question is where should I direct my vet to send the prescription for PZI (company information). If he doesn't agree to the prescription then what is the insulin dosage for Humulin NPH? Your reply is very much anticipated!!

ProZinc has been touted as the replacement for Vetsulin. Here is the company's web site: http://www.prozinc.us/ Some members here on FDMB use it and have good results with it. Some online pet pharmacies sell ProZinc if you provide a prescription. Here's one: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=9790

There is also BCP PZI insulin: http://www.bcpvetpharm.com/products_bovine.htmYour vet can request a free 5 ml bottle for you: http://www.bcpvetpharm.com/pdf/sample.pdf

Lantus (glargine) is a great insulin to use for diabetic cats. There are published veterinary studies on how the insulin works. Here is the one done by Rand J.S: http://www.felinediabetes.com/Roomp_Rand_2008 dosing_testing protocol.pdf You buy Lantus at the Human pharmacy with a prescription. The Lantus ISG has info on how to buy Lantus (pens or cartrigdges instead of the 10 ml bottle), how to handle Lantus, and other info.

Humulin N can be used, though for some cats the duration is too short and bgs are pretty much an up and down roller coaster ride all day. Here's the primer on using Humulin N: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=303
