I have another post about question on Lantus dosing. Julie & Bandit mentioned .75 unit dose. I have some BD syringes that have .5 scale. How would I give .75. Thanks, Julie. I checked the Lantus Stickies and didn't find this information. I'm sorry. I'm just so stressed about my cat.

No worries!

Here is what .25u looks like on your syringe.

.75u is the same, with the stopper halfway between the marks--but above the first .5u marking instead of below it. The plunger is halfway between the .5u and 1u marks. Does that make sense now?

When you "fatten" or "skinny" the dose, you're raising or lowering it by .1u. Here is what .1u looks like:

You would eyeball that amount above or below the dose you're giving.

You need to scroll down to the end of this sticky: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=18139 for more information on fine dosing.

Magnifiers are very helpful for this.

I find both clip on magnifiers and headband magnifiers (if you don't wear glasses) here. The clip ons work pretty well and can be flipped up when you don't need them - great for those of us having issues with presbyopia (the inability to adjust your eye focus between near and far)!

This is a good question.

I was giving Annie .5u and .75u at one point, and our syringes say its the half marking ones but I don't have those half lines between my 1u and 2u etc??? Where can I find those?

Do your syringes look like the one on the right, or on the left?

The left hand scale is what syringes with half unit marks should look like. If your box says they have half unit marks and they look like the syringes on the right, then there was some sort of pharmacy/manufacturer error, and you need to contact the pharmacy/manufacturer and get them replaced. If they look like the left hand side, you might be mis-reading the syringe.

I called my drug store and specifically asked for them. They fortunately did have them in stock so you should be able to get them :) At least I can in Canada.

mine look like the ones on the right... but the package says 1/2cc??? we got those from the vet. We went to shoppers drugmart one day to try to get the 1/2 unit syringes, and she showed us a package that said 1/2cc, and once again they looked like the one on the right up there in the picture. I told her i needed the 1/2 unit syringes and she said those were the ones..... What the heck is going on here? haha. i need the ones like the ones on the left in that picture.

I see what your problem is--the 1/2 cc are the larger ones and don't have half-unit markings. Those are really large and not so great to use on a small animal like a cat!

Go to your pharmacy and ask to get 30-31g, 8mm (5/16"), .3cc syringes, with half-unit markings. Make sure you say that you want the ones with the half-unit markings, because they make them in that size both with and without them. These are the same syringes used to give insulin to small children.

I'll also explain the syringe terminology for you so you have a better understanding of what those measurements mean!

30-31g--this is the gauge of the needle, which measures how thick the needle is. The higher the gauge, the thinner the needle is. Depending on the syringe manufacturer, these size syringes can be 30g or 31g--either size is fine.

8mm (5/16 inch)--this is how long the needle is.

.3cc--this is the capacity of the syringe. You have 1/2cc syringes, which means they can hold 50 units of insulin. .3cc syringes hold 30 units of insulin (there is 100 units of insulin in one cc).

Half-unit markings--like in the picture above, there is an extra set of markings on the left hand side of the line that indicate .5u increments.
