Off to vet on Weds for 6mo check up …….. when I put him in the carrier he peed a gallon. Revenge I thought...... Oh well there goes the urine sample. (Somehow the techs still managed to get a little bit)

Dr called last night with blood results and all is good yay! But he said there was evidence of UTI :o I was surprised and remarked that he had no symptoms. Dr said we could culture and find out what ATB was needed to treat and I was thinking about the time involved to culture, the weekend coming when vet is closed and Murphys Law  so I opted to just get him on something now. Since it was late and all I had was Baytril he said it would be Ok to give him some. I no sooner hung up and Houdini came over to me and peed on the floor! He has NEVER done that before! There was a fair amount of blood in it too! I quickly gave him the Baytril and watched helplessly as he went from box to box. Stayed up late with him a coaxed him to drink a little more but not much I could do.

He seems better today and still eating well but not altogether a happy cat. Sure explains the wonky #’s the last few days.

If the techs didn’t bother or weren’t a good as they are we never would have gotten a urine sample in the first place. If I had not talked to the Dr last night I would have panicked at the bloody urine and we would have been in the emergency room. Sigh..... Someone's lookin' out for us ;-)

Gail, did you go ahead and have them do a culture? It is the best way to find out what antibiotic is the best. Good thing you went in.

To me there is no clear evidence of UTI. A urine sample syringed-up from the floor is not suitable for culture. Blood in urine is not a good indicator of a UTI either. Just two weeks ago my civi Stuart was peeing blood but a UA showed no infection and he was fine the next day. I have had similar occurrences with my Patches too. However, about five weeks ago Patches was a little off and her rabies vaccine was due so I took her in. A UA showed a UTI eventhough there were no clear symptoms.

Larry, Apparently I wasn't clear in my post ........he peed in the carrier at home, switched carriers and then went to the vets office. The urine sample was done by needle. My vets office staff are very professional and I doubt seriously if they would have used a sample from the floor. Also the urine sample clearly showed an infection before I saw any blood in his urine.

Gail, it is indeed fortuitous that your vet and his staff found this and you were aware when Houdini demonstrated discomfort in front of you.

Best wishes, H, for a quick and complete recovery.
