Our 20 year old cat was diagnosed with diabetics today, we want to be cat totally proactive to help him. We are hoping that joining this forum will help us to better care for him.

Oh it will help you, for sure!
WElcome! Sorry you have to be here, but you are in the best place to learn about Feline Diabetes.
Read EVERYTHING, is my advice.
Try and be calm. We all know how overwhelming it is at first.
Check out the health links - you will learn A LOT! Diabetes is managable.

What I did was to copy and paste everything into word docs so I could absorb it all later.
Breathe - you, and your baby will be ok.

You did it exactly right. And you must be doing lots of other things right to have a 20 year old kitty!

The site is full of resources and information. I would suggest that you start reading, copying the pages and rereading. A good place to start is the FAQs: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2501

We have had great success treating our diabetic kitties with a wet lo carb diet, starting at a low dose of insulin and increasing carefully and slowly based on glucose testing at home. Here's a good site to learn about diet: http://www.catinfo.org. Here's a video showing how we test: Video for hometesting

Questions for you:

What insulin?
Dose?
Diet?
How was the diabetes diagnosed?
Cat's name?

Let us know how we can help. Everyone who posts here is paying it forward for help they received at the beginning of their journey.

Hi and welcome to FDMB.

We have all been where you are now. It is scary at first, but let me reassure you that feline diabetes is a very managable disease. It is managed through diet, hometesting, insulin and lots of love.

This board was created to help everyone with a diabetic cat. Please ask any questions you may have.

If you could answer Sue's questions, that will also help us when we respond to any of your questions.
