Try and be calm. We all know how overwhelming it is at first.
Check out the health links - you will learn A LOT! Diabetes is managable.
What I did was to copy and paste everything into word docs so I could absorb it all later.

You did it exactly right. And you must be doing lots of other things right to have a 20 year old kitty!
The site is full of resources and information. I would suggest that you start reading, copying the pages and rereading. A good place to start is the FAQs: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2501
We have had great success treating our diabetic kitties with a wet lo carb diet, starting at a low dose of insulin and increasing carefully and slowly based on glucose testing at home.
