Hello,

My cat was recently diagnosed, in January of this year. He had multiple teeth removed last Sunday, as well as a very large abscess on his head drained.

I have been bouncing around gathering info from this site, and want to thank you for providing it.

I am thinking of getting a human meter from Walmart later today. I am hoping that once Inky has his infections controlled, and his gums heal, we can really get going on controlling his BG better.

I have a hypo kit ready to go, and had to use it already.

When I brought him home from the vet on Sunday, he went into hypoglycemia. The Alphatrak said LO. I immediately starting dosing him with Karo corn syrup. Then I ended up bringing him to an emergency vet, where he spent the night. When I picked him up, I brought him to the vet who did the dental and the lancing. He received fluids and glucose at the ER vet, and the dental vet kept him for 24 hours and gave him fluids, his lantus and then a bolus for a high reading (I don't have the info on what was high) When they discharged him, I brought him home, and his Bg went down to 49. I was able to get it up into normal with the karo, and with some dry zd food that I soaked in water. The dental vet said to lower his Lantus to .5 units. It was low normal this am, so I skipped. That was before I read about stalling, which I will do in the future.

He is on Gabapentin for pain, and I did notice that he is very unsteady on it, and it seems to mess up his BG, so this morning I only gave him 1/2 cc. He was still able to sleep a lot, but he is still unsteady. I am going to try to get some more readings today and the next two days. I work from 5 to 1 and I live an hour away from work, so tho I do my best, his Lantius isn't always 12 hrs apart. I know that the infections he has been having has made it harder to stabilize his BG, so I am hoping that he will do better once he isn't infected any more.

A book is fine, it's good to know the background. :)

Is there a particular reason Inky is eating Z/D wet? It's quite high in carbs. Food changes can also reduce the amount of insulin needed. Out of curiosity, when the Alphatrak said LO, what dose had you given him that day? Any data you have for the last few days will help us figure out what you should do next with dosing.
 
Okay. You should ask both the dental vet and the ER vet to email or mail the journals to you. So you see.
I instinctively feel the dental vet should Not have given a bolus dose, when it is Lantus. That's why he ended up in hypo.

Are you talking about gabapentin here, or are you referring to the lantus (0.5U)? Just want to double-check the insulin dose after the hypo. It should look very very tiny in the syringe, like there is barely anything there.

Last fall, he started overgrooming and lost a lot of fur. He got dipped in Lime Sulfur for 4 weeks. He went to a dermatologist . We decided to try z/d because of possible food allergies. His fur started growing back after being on it for two weeks.

In the meantime, his weight went from nine lbs to five. I was supposed to take him in for an ultrasound to check for cancer. The day the vet started in with the Euthanasia speech, I asked him to check his BG. It was 793. He was put on 2 until of Lantus. We did a BG curve, it was still high, (He was on dry food at the time) They raised his dose to 3 units, I took him off of dry food. That is when low readings started showing up. I did a curve at home, and we went to 2 and 1/2 units. His abscess grew to ridiculous, I took him to a different vet, regular and ER. They are the ones that did the dental and abscess, and moved him to 1/2 unit. Fortunately that day, my 1/2 gradient needles arrived.

I am sorry, but I had very little sleep, and didn't document so I am not sure. The bolus dose was not Lantus, but a fast acting one.

Gabapentin I changed to 1/2 cc.

Lantus is now 1/2 unit, yeah it looks like hardly anything. Feels like I don't even move the plunger when I press it.
 
I want to switch him to Blue Buffalo Novel Protein alligator, which is higher in protein. It is still not great for the carbs, but I am not sure what else to try.

I did use the CatInfo pages and made my own cat food for a while, but with my own Dxs and working full time, I just don't have the energy to do that for now.

Yeah, I got up at 12:30 am the day he had his dental, took him to DD's house so she could take him in for the dental. I got him home at about 7. I took him to bed with me, he woke me up about an hour later, that is when the LO happened. I got home from the ER vet at about 2, and had to run his food to them before 6. Then I had to take him to the dental vet, and decided to leave him there for 24 hours, as I knew I was too tired to monitor him properly I went home and slept for 13 hours.
 
Thanks for the update. I had wondered if it was allergies. There are a lot of commercially available low carb wet or raw food options that have different proteins. Some options include rabbit, venison, lamb, duck, kangaroo. Another way to make your own food is a premix. I used one called EZ Complete - available here. Just add meat, water and premix, stir and freeze in meal/day size portions. It didn't take much time. I even made some with bison and elk. If you can get alligator there, you could make your own too.

I did look, and it has chicken liver, which he may or may not be allergic to. He is so fragile right now, I think I will wait until his weight goes back up towards normal and he does not look like a poster child for starving cats.
