Scooter has a weird lump growth on the top of his hind leg... He keeps biting at it and making it bleed. Any ideas? I can't afford a biopsy on it right now.

Oh gosh... poor Scooter. I am not sure what that could be but hope someone else will have an idea. I hope it is nothing, or something like a sebaceous cyst, but I am not experienced enough with this type of thing to have a guess.

That looks like a swelling 'sticker' or possibly got poked with something. If Scooter were mine, I'd clean it good several times by soaking it with hydrogen peroxide - I have a feeling you'll find that it breaks open, drains then heals. Spike gets those occasionally - one of them he caused himself by poking a claw thru his skin when he was scratching out a 'sticktight'. This happens especially on the legs. My Hot Rod (GA) got them too.

BIG HUG for both of you!!

If it is the thing that Lyresa is suggesting it might be, might I respectfully suggest against hydrogen peroxide, which can dry and injure the skin. You can probably accomplish the same "breaking open" end with a warm washcloth compress.

If it is not the thing that Lyressa is suggesting it might be, I don't have a clue what it might be.

aw...can't offer helpful input...
but sending vines to lil Scooter and hoping that it's easily resolved.

I agree with Venita on this one and should have suggested it first - try warm washcloth compress. If it IS an infection pocket tho', the skin over the top has already been killed by the fever heat inside but is still hard due to the wonderful way our bodies work. If softening that dead skin top with warm and wet works, HOORAY! Spike won't let me hold a warm, wet something against his 'hurts' for long enough to soften it - I'd end up with more 'hurts'... :-D I can use the peroxide on him with a cotton ball quickly before he gets upset.

My only suggestion too........

I only use saline for flushing anymore... rubbing alcohol is for cleaning thermal paste off heatsinks and peroxide is for heavy stain removal :-D

I will try to compress it.

You might try a dab of Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment after the soaking.
It will soften and help heal and/or open the wound so it can drain if it needs to.
If it is a covered bite wound, they can fester pretty deep.
If it doesn't come to a head in a day or two, I'd double check with your Vet just to make sure it isn't anything more worrisome.

I would also make that washcloth as hot as you can without burning. Hot compresses are better than warm when dealing with an infection and it looks like it has a head on it. I cleaned a terrible deep abscess out on my Midnight that way from a cat fight before I was able to get him to the vet. I applied the hot compresses 3x a day and neosporin after. The vet couldn't believe how clean it was. He said it was the first time he didn't have to use a tube on an abscess that deep. The heat will make it squirt out. gross but efficient.

I have dealt with a lot of abscesses, my rats get them all the time. I recommend against neosporin though, they need to heal from the inside out and covering the hole with an ointment can cause it to just fill back up again ;-) It doesn't look like any abscess I've ever seen though...

I didn't mean to cover the opening. Neosporin should never be put inside but only on the outside or on a closed wound. I used it around the wound. & just covered with gauze to keep dirt out. Does it have a pus head as it appears?

Yoshi had a bump that looked a lot like that up in front of his ears that he would rub and make bleed. It released hystamines or something to make it itchy which is why he would scratch it. The vet checked it out and I can't now remember what she called it but said it was ok when she checked it but was the type of thing that might turn into something bad so we should consider having it removed. If it's been there a while and feels like a growth rather than temporary swelling, I'd suggest having your vet look at it.

From your description, that sounds like a mast cell tumor. The ones a re the skin are relatively benign but should be remove. My Civi Izzy had a few that were removed and Mitten had some removed.

Hmmmm.... I am going to see if Scooter can have his dental done soon (DCIN will be funding it) and I could ask the vet to check it out while we're there. Probably won't be for a few weeks but I'll keep an eye on it in the meantime. He seems to be leaving it alone today.
