Happy Friday everyone!

Grayson would like to introduce his big brother (but not NEARLY as big!) Herb. Just shy of 10 years old.

One of my "First Five", I rescued Herb and his brothers 8/4/2003 from the attic of a vacant/ boarded house after their mom had been hit by a car (Reggie was SCREAMING, and caught my attention). First litter of itty-bitties I ever had, and bottle feeding about killed me. Herb and his "twin" Peaches  are orange & white tabbies.

On Tuesday of this week, my vet came to the house for the "annual tune-up" - shots for everyone and any additional things I request. I requested bloodwork on Grayson and a few others that had been acting a little "off". Herb's showed BG=352. Totally caught me off guard! He was down to 13.8 pounds, 1.0 less than last year.

He's been transitioned to (exclusively) FF and has earned a tab on Grayson's spreadsheet. I've been testing a few times a day (he REALLY likes FDC! ;-) ) and since the change he's been about 60-80 points lower than the first two readings. I plan to start him on Lev tomorrow. Although he has to share some things with Grayson (food, insulin, etc), he will have his own meter so I can get accurage averages on each.

I'm thinking of starting at either .5u or 1u Lev... and am open to input. G was such a different kitty, he didn't play by the rules. I'm hoping that a "normal diabetic" might show response and even consider becoming diet controlled down the road! (I was hoping the food might do the trick) But he gets the benefit of a mama bean who's not overwhelmed by the new journey. Since we started G on ProZinc, I'm nearly 1.5 years out of practise - so please offer up any thoughts!

Thanks,
Lu-Ann, Grayson & Herb

Welcome Herb! Sorry you have to be here, but I'm sure your little brother will show you the ropes. ;-)

Lu-Ann, how long ago did he transition to all FF diet? Just wondering if the dry food is still making its way out of Herb's system. If he were mine, I would start him with .5u.

We want to see Herb - pictures please. :-D

I see Herb is going to be more of a challenge... he's quite the lap cat and G is not. Having a hard time accessing the computer with a kitty on the keyboard! Pictures forthcoming. Gotta reduce. BRB.

Love red tabby boys!

My civvie Buster is red tabby and white, with quite the attitude about paw handling!

Welcome to the group Herb! Your momma bean is an old hand at FD but here is hoping you are a regular fd kitty and not following Grayson around :o .

You get the special food and treats and special time with with mommy like Grayson does!

Awwww, he's such a beautiful boy! Sorry you have to do the sugar dance with Herbie too, Lu-Ann but I hope that this may be a walz instead of a tango. :-)

Since it's been 4 days since the food change, I don't think the food itself is directly influencing his BG's anymore - except for the residual hyperglycemia. So, I agree with Marcy's recommendation that if Herbie were my guy I'd start with 0.5u of Levemir. I Sheila were here, she might mention that her Jeddie went into the 30's on I think it was his first or second shot of Lev and she started out at 0.5u. I've seen Harley (GA), Hadley, Vinny and Bagheera (GA) and several others on this board who've newly started Levemir respond very well to the insulin within the first 3-4 shots. After a few days, insulin resistance may set in and the numbers may start to level out or maybe even go up. If that happens, you'll have the data to know that it's time to start systematically raising the dose.

I'm glad to hear Herbie is eating his wet food, loves his treats and is good with the testing!

Please keep us posted on his progress!

Got to see Grayson, Herb, and the rest of the fuzzy fur gang!!!

So awesome and Lu-Ann drove mom and I around town and showed off the new museum pieces for her town.

 :-D :-D
