Still early into Dodger's diagnosis. I was feeding him the Fancy Feast chicken and turkey pates. He was eating them well when his appetite was really ravenous. Lately he's gotten pickier and doesn't always want to eat at the scheduled morning and evening times when I need to administer insulin. Wondering if he's just tired of eating the same thing? Naturally, I just bought a whole case of each LOL.

My co-worker gave me a ton of Blue Tastefuls Chicken Entree (spoonless singles) that her cats wouldn't eat. This has become my go-to food when Dodger gets picky. He always eats it. I want to buy more in the regular can size, but I couldn't find the Blue Tastefuls listed in the food chart on this site. I went on Chewy and the carbs aren't listed. I did find these answers in the Q&A sections. Copied below:

The chicken: "This recipe has a carbohydrates content of 1.74% as fed."
The turkey and chicken mixed: "Blue Buffalo Tastefuls Turkey & Chicken Entrée Pate Wet Cat Food has approximately 2.85% carbohydrates on an as fed basis. Due to your pet's diagnosed condition, we recommend speaking to your vet to see if this is suitable for your pet's current diet plan."

These seem like super low numbers, but are they accurate? Just want to run it by you all first to make sure. Any opinions on Blue Tastefuls in general also appreciated.

ETA: I didn't look up the seafood varieties because Dodger doesn't seem to like any fish flavors.

I googled this about the Chicken Entree and found
Estimated Nutrient Content
  • Guaranteed Analysis. Protein: 9% Fat: 4% Fiber: 1.5% Moisture: 82% Ash: 0% Carb: 3.5%
  • Dry Matter Analysis. Protein: 50% Fat: 22.22% Fiber: 8.33% Ash: 8% Carb: 19.44%
  • Calorie Weighted Basis. Protein: 40.51% Fat: 43.73% Carb: 15.76%
If this is what Blue Buffalo tells you the same thing about the dry matter for the carbs then it's too high. It also has sweet potatoes and rice in it.

I tried to find the turkey and chicken flavor but no luck. I would assume it's too high also since it has sweet potatoes and rice in it also

But let's see what Blue Buffalo tells you, let me know I'm curious

Just found this about the turkey and chicken take a look

I feed Newman Fancy Feast Chicken and Chicken and Beef Pates switching back and forth when he gets bored with one or the other. I have PureBites Chicken Breast Freeze-Dried Raw Cat Treats which I crumble some into a sprinkle and when he sits and looks at the Fancy Feast with disinterest, I sprinkle the freeze-dried chicken on the pate and so far, it jump starts his interest and he eats the Fancy Feast non-stop.

Thank you, Diane, for finding that! I think Chewy's answers to the questions were misleading then, because both inquirers stated they had diabetic cats. So if I see potato and rice in the ingredients I should assume high carbs? I will check out the FF chunky foods. My other cat used to like the chunky chicken.

Linda, I have freeze-dried chicken treats so I'm going to try that. Thanks for the tip!

You are welcome
Hi I would e mail them anyway just to see what they say.
You can also look at our food chart , he might like Friskies they are low carb
Most of us feed 6% or under . I would feed Tyler 2 and 3%

@DodgersMom
Hi I contacted Blue Buffalo for you and they answered me back with the dry matter carbs.
Looks like the Chicken would be OK to feed. You can use the Turkey and chicken in case you ever need med carbs to bring up his BG. Med carbs are between 11-17%
Dear Diane,

Thank you for taking the time to contact Blue Buffalo. All of our non-therapeutic diets sold through pet retailers are maintenance diets, and are not intended to be fed to animals seeking specific nutrition for a medical condition that may be supported with nutritional therapy. The Tastefuls Turkey & Chicken Pate canned cat formula contains 11.76% carbohydrates, dry matter basis. The Tastefuls Chicken Pate canned cat formula contains 7.25% carbohydrates, dry matter basis.

We recommend speaking with your veterinarian, as he or she should be able to direct you to a product that is best suited for your pet should they have specific medical conditions that may benefit from nutritional therapy.

Thank you again for contacting us.

Sincerely,

Tracy

Diane, thank you for doing that! I feel like writing Chewy and asking them to remove their responses about the carbs being so low. Both people had diabetic cats, so I think those replies were inaccurate and misleading. Glad I asked first before buying. Thanks again!

You're welcome :cat:
You can even try sprinkling some Parmesan cheese on his wet food, a lot of cats like it
