Gandalf 6/28 Low this AM

He was 46 at +11.5 when I needed to shoot this AM. Tested again, 47. So I waited and he was 72 a half hour later, so I reduced to 1.1U.

Tonight at +9.5 he was 113, so I thought that was good. I let him eat some food, although there was still food left over from the day I opened another can because Tigget was demanding a fresh can, so by +11.75 he was 297. I stayed with 1.1U because I can't continue with such extreme lows at preshot time. That's one of the lowest he's been that late in cycle. So it may warrant a dose decrease, although I still wonder what food intake had to do with the low, as all bowls were empty this AM.

Well, I would be thinking decrease as well... but you know his "trends" better than any of us. When is his nadir? Could he have been even lower earlier? Is that why you think all the food was gone (because he was eating to bring up his BG)?

No I think rather his BG was low because all the food was gone. He is a grazer or snacker. He eats periodically through the night. If peak was around 9 as it usually is, he could have been in the 50s or not then, and with little food afterwards, it just never came back up. It's odd for him to be so low at nearly +12.

We concentrate an awful lot on dose when there can be other factors other than too much insulin which make them go lower than usual.

But for now I will run with a lower dose. Have to do splits on Wednesday AM anyway.

Yes, I totally agree.

Especially in multiple cat households. There could be numerous reasons for this - not getting their share of food would probably be the number one culprit. Getting a lot of exercise during the night with the other kitties could be another. Absorption could be different each time. Or maybe they threw up a hairball + food somewhere. I have often wondered why a dose decrease is 'automatically earned' when other things could have come into play to cause a low number (especially in seasoned diabetics like Gandalf).
