Hi, I’m new and could use some advice. My cat Sophie is 14 and in pretty good health. About a year ago she needed steroids for an acute battle with asthma and the vet believes triggered her diabetes. We caught it right ways and began insulin and within 6 months we got her in remission. And for the last 6 months all has been good. She injured her hip jumping off the kitchen countertop and we are giving her pain meds (tramadol) while she’s healing and now she’s not eating. We’ve been in and out of the vet the last few days trying anti nausea medication and fluids and we got an appetite stimulant today but I’m worried she not eating. I’m also monitoring her blood sugar but I’m at a loss to get her to eat. We feed fancy feast pates and Tiki Cat tuna or chicken. I’ve got another vet appointment on Wednesday but I’m desperate to get her to eat so her blood sugars stay good. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’ve tried canned tuna, roasted chicken, and Parmesan cheese. She takes a bite or two but that’s it.

Her appetite slowed about 4 days ago and it’s been 2days since she’s only eaten a few bits of food. Mostly Parmesan cheese and canned tuna fish(water only no salt), not enough to sustain her. The vet gave us mirtazapine (not sure the dosing it was a lengthy on the tube) today and we applied it but she didn’t really eat much. She injured her hip 2 weeks ago and has been on Tramadol for the pain while it heals. She has had to go to the vet a bunch in the last two weeks but she’s a friendly easy going cat who isn’t stressed by this but she’s definitely still healing, we had more X-rays on Friday. Our vet ran a bunch of test and everything is fine and her teeth look good. So nothing stands out as the cause. She seems happy and fine still drinking, peeing and pooping normally. Wants to be petted and greets us at the door.
Thanks for the links. I’ll check them out.

I would try syringe feeding. I would also stop the tramadol and try gabapentin instead or better yet buperphonal but that is relatively expensive.

I agree with Larry, buprenorphine was my go to for pain. Tramadol was my vet's third choice after gabapentin, which I also gave Neko. You might also want to see if you can get a prescription for odansetron for nausea. It's a human med, you get it at a regular pharmacy with the prescription. I find it's the best thing for nausea. Eating a few bites then walking way is a classic sign of nausea. You don't want to give an appetite stimulant (mirtazapine) if nausea is not addressed.
