Had a chat with the vet yesterday. Aside from the *probable* pancreatis (vet says not 100% sure as the blood test was not done fasting. Tom is eating, gaining weight and does not show any obvious symptoms of pancretitis. Will rerun fasting to be sure),Tom's kidney values are continuing to worsen.

She mentionned switching him to low protein food. Now, I have been reading a lot on the different resources available here on the debate regarding CRF and low protein foods. My concern is to manage his kidney issues along with his currently OTJ status.

We are (were) feeding only Wellness chicken and turkey, which - according the Janet & Binky's list - have 30% /31% protein respectively and phosphorus of 219/200. Carbs are well below 10 on both. We intentionally moved away from anything fishy / higher in phosporus last summer and continue to add lots of water to food.

On Janet & Binky's list, there is 2 renal foods from Royal Canin that appear to have lower protein and phosphorus that the Wellness, with only slightly higher carbs (8 and 11). Does anyone have any experience / comments about this brand?

You may have already seen these sites for CRF, Sonia: CRF sites

I have. Thank you. I have also just joined the CRF group on Yahoo.
There is just so much information and I am so very scared about doing something wrong or not enough. I already feel guilty enough that Tom was fed dry food for 15 years...

Sonia, I had a lot of difficulty finding low phos/low carb foods for Bear Man.

I could only get one type of RC wet food here. I can't remember the name, but it came in a small can and was a chunk in gravy type food. The chunks were big, and I mashed them. My cats wouldn't touch it.

I aimed for phosph under 250. I tried these foods (numbers are from my old written notes, and not recently checked against J&B list).
Wellness kitten (216)
Wellness turkey (200)
Wellness chicken (219) - Bear wouldn't eat wellness

Evo 95% venison (146) - Bear liked it but seemed to flare his pancreatitis
Evo 95% beef ( 171) - Bear didn't like it.

Walmart Special Kitty Chicken and Liver (239) - not sure if the Canadian product is the same one as on the list

Friskies Chef Dinner and Seafood Supreme - in the 260's, also changed packaging, and I don't think product is the same. Bear liked these.

Cowboy Cookout (203) - Bear didn't like.

FF Wild Salmon Florentine (241) - Bear liked it but flared his IBD.

Bear did eat dry food, which he needed to keep his calorie intake up. I had very little luck with the foods I could find here, so he ate a combo of high carb/low phos renal k/d dry, and low carb/higher phos Friskies or FF (some old beef varieties no longer available here). I tried Medi Cal and Hills renal canned foods with no luck.

It is so difficult to find suitable CRF foods here.

Wellness chicken and turkey are all they were eating until the recall. Now on Fancy Feast but it is higher in phos and is like crack to them. I don't think they breathe while inhaling it. Will go back to Wellness and continue my search.

They all just got a nice serving of freshly cooked chicken breast, just for them. Tom loves it, especially when still just a little warm. He is eating really well and I'm thankful for that.

hi Sonia,
I fed Cosmo the wellness chicken and turkey almost exclusively and he remained OTJ and his CRF was not what took him at the end. They use human grade meat, so very high quality, very little organ meat.

I think the alternative would be raw diet that has been formulated for lower phosphorus content. You might consider a phone consult with Dr Lisa to talk about it?

Has your vet suggested a phosphorus binder with his food?

No. I got the results yesterday (Sunday) and she was off. I talked to another vet but at the time I was mainly focusing on the pancreatitis test results.
The phos levels fall within what the lab calls normal but reading here and on Tanya's CRF and now understand that it should be lower. She is back Wednesday and I will talk to her about it.

As for the food, I think I will stick to Wellness at least for now.

Witn was a CRF and diabetic kitty. For several years, I fed her Friskies Special Diet canned foods. The only flavor I did not feed her was the Chicken & Gravy because of the carbs. During the time she was on this diet, her kidney values remained stable and I was able to keep her BG levels regulated with a low dose of insulin.
