Well, it appears it has been determined that I need more experience with pet diabetes! The family dog, Sally, crashed Thursday and had to be rushed to the local Emergency Vet. Upon arrival to the ER, Sally's heart rate was 285 (120 normal) and I was directed to take her to the Vet School immediately for more advanced treatment. It was later determined, that the elevated HR was due to severe dehydration. She was admitted into the ICU (debit or credit!!!) and the saga began..............GUESS WHAT??!!!! You've got it....She is Diabetic and has severe pancreatitis. She remained in ICU for 4 days before coming home today. She still feels bad and is not eating good, but hopefully she will start feeling better soon.

Sally now has her own meter, lancets and strips!!! She is on NPH---My biggest fear is giving Prozinc to her and the N to Kitty!

I am almost scared to drink the water at my house.........who would imagine I would be "Blessed" with two diabetic pets?!

I just wanted to check in and share my news! I am sorry I have been MIA, but I do read daily!

I am looking forward to trying to post more frequently---maybe I can join the Breakfast Club!!!

Ugh! You're not getting any breaks, are you? At least you have a clue what to expect. Keep their insulin separate so they're.hard to mix up. I gave Cass.my levemir one day; thank goodness I didn't give myself prozinc!

I think I saw somewhere that Rebecca also has a canine diabetes site; may want to check it out.

Hang in there & keep us posted.

Wow, Kim!

diabetes AND p-titis? Is the treatment the same? Sub-q fluids and pain meds?

DON'T DRINK THE WATER!!!

um, I suppose this means you'll have to suspend work on updating Kitty's SS?

Hugs,
Carl and Bob (and Mullet, who, if he ever decides to get the "sugars", I will make sure and point him towards NC)

Yikes, you are going to be dancing really fast. At least you already know the basics. Rebecca does have a site for diabetic dogs too.

Maybe Sally was just jealous of all the special treats and attention that Ms. Kitty was getting and wanted some of those for herself.

Kim,
Kitty knows the routine as well as you do....
I'm thinking you could let her treat Sally. Once Sally gets the routine down, she can treat Kitty... That'll give you some free time... if only they had opposable thumbs!

Kim,
I'm really sorry to hear about Sally, but if anybody can handle this, I'm sure you can.

I do have an extra calming collar if you need one.

Sorry Kim but at least you know what to do. What is NPH?

Oh wow. I can feel your pain. Not funny at all, but that line about debit or credit had me laughing! It's like when you go to the hospital here...before you give your name and state your ailment the 1st question is, "Do you have insurance??"

In all seriousness, I'm sorry that your other pet has diabetes but on the brighter side, at least you know what to do.

In all silliness, you now have membership in the Breakfast Club. ;-)

Oh Robin...do you really think Kim will make a SS for SAlly!

but seriuosly Kim, I am so sorry about Sally,
but like everyone said, at least you know what you are doing so you are ahead of the dance there

Sorry to hear the news, but how grateful your fuzzy babies must be...having you to take care of them! :-D

Now when you're off at work, they can regale each other with their tales of woe and hardship, their BG ups and downs, and argue over whose treats are better!

Play it safe & give 'em the same treats. I buy my freeze dried chicken in the dog food aisle. :-D

Yes, NPH is Humulin N.

The treatment has been very rigid for Sally. The University vet hospital said, that this was the worse case of inflamation in a pancreas they had seen in years (I wouldn't have expected anything less!) She is actually on fluids, 3 antibiotics, anti nausea meds., pain meds and Heparin. I guess there is something to be learned from all things, so I will pass this along concerning Ptitis...the Doctors said that with severe inflamation of the pancreas, that clotting of the blood is often accelerated and blood clots are a BIG danger of the condition. I would think the same would hold true for cats, but I am not sure. Since Kitty has chronic ptitis, I thought I would ask the Dr. in the event that I would need to monitor that when she has flare ups. The Heparin is giving sub q. We go back on Thursday for bloodwork and an ultrasound (debit or credit!!!)

Whew....I hadn't thought about the SS, but I have been logging her readings in a journal!

Thanks for the concern. I will keep you updated.......does anyone know the webpage for Rebecca's site for dogs?

I looked it up and was going to link it for you but the site was down. I typed in "Canine diabetes" it's the link that talks about both dogs and cats.

I'm so sorry that Sally is so sick. It must feel pretty overwhelming right now.

((((Kim & Sally))))

((HUGS)) Sorry to hear Sally is so sick but with your experience it sounds like you're the perfect one to get her on track quickly. GL to you & your gang!

Kim, I am so sorry, poor Sally but she has a wonderful Mama Bean to help her ..... thankfully you know the drill, well except the SS part :) my fingers are crossed and prayers are sent for you in this time.

Nancy and Payne .....

I just couldn't believe this when I read it Kim! So sorry Sally is sick :(
And so sorry you have more on your plate. But if anyone can do it, you can. We have no doubt!
Sending hugs and prayers. And dreams of a human calming collar. And a case of virtual wine.
((((((Kim))))))

Kim, I'm so sorry that Sally also has diabetes and is so sick.
I was afraid one of my civvies was developing FD too, but he checked out ok, his thyroid levels were slightly elevated and that was causing the weight loss and excessive appetite. I am still going to keep an eye on him though.
I hope Sally will feel better and be able to get home soon.
I used to pet sit for someone that had a diabetic chocolate lab and she was on NPH. I thought it was easier to give her a shot than it is to give kitties a shot. One thing with diabetic dogs is they tend to develop vision problems/loss and cataracts with uncontrolled diabetes which cats usually don't.

Kim, sorry to read about your dog, just saw your post. One of the top diabetic dog sites is......
http://k9diabetes.com/ I do know dogs need much tighter control and I had just read a vet article that 75% of diabetic dogs will go blind in one year. Not encouraging but tight control may help.
