Hi
I've just done my first ketone test this morning using Ket-Diastix strips. I managed to get the strip directly under the flow of urine as Crystal was in the garden at the time, have been waiting 5 days to catch her mid flow but she is very elusive. Waited the required time for both glucose test and ketone test. Glucose was at the very highest mark (very dark brown), nearly gave me heart failure until I calmed down and realised the the one to worry about was the Ketone test, which was neutral, thank goodness. As the test was done within about 10 minutes of her PSAM reading of 22. I supose this would be a normal glucose reading?

Thanks to everyone who takes time to answer us newbie's numerous questions and guide us in the right direction, it's much appreciated.

I'm glad the ketone test was negative.

Now come on down in BGs, nice and easy, Suki.

Good for you on getting that ketone test. It sure does sound like Crystal is not very cooperative with that so kudos to you on getting that done.

Yes, that 22 mmoL reading would go along with the high reading on the ketodiastik as far as glucose levels go. Hopefully, you will find a better dose for Crystal and get here numbers back into the normal range.

Thanks Dyana and Deb & Wink for taking the time to give me some encouragement, your kind comments have certainly raised my confidence a bit. I must admit to be a bit stressed out with trying to absorb all the info and do the best thing for Crystal, she is so dearly loved. Next hurdle is Monday's visit to the vet for a lab blood test to compare with the ones I have been taking and to discuss my spreadsheet and options.

Time for another test ....

Way to go to get that ever so important ketone test. The way you did it, is the way I do it too. I always keep the bottle close to the litter box but found that when I catch Merlin peeing, I am fumbling around to get the bottle open. By the time it is open, he is usually all done, so I leave one test strip out (faced down) on the table so all I have to do is grab it and go.

Human glucometers generally read 30-40% lower than lab equipment or pet meters, +/- 20% variability the FDA allows meters to read.
Unless you're using a pet meter, the numbers you get may be very different.
This is OK if you are using pet reference ranges for the human meter.
