My cat Scratface went in for a glucose curve on Monday (16th) and I also asked the vet to look at his ears as they were bothering him. He cleaned them out as they were dirty and prescribed Canaural ear drops, 3-4 drops twice a day. The curve showed his BG was ok apart from a dip about 4 hours after his shot but he was given some more food and it returned to normal.

I did as i was told and administered the ear drops and his ears aren't bothering him now. On Thursday evening i noticed his eyes were dilated and not reacting to light so he went back to the vets on Friday. His blood pressure was checked and was normal as was his eyes to make sure they weren't showing signs of retinal detatchment and they weren't. I asked him about the ear drops and he said it wouldn't be them that was causing this problem and to carry on with them. He put it down to he maybe having had a hypo that was not seen. I'm not convinced of this as he always has food down and I have been keeping a closer check on him to make sure he's not showing hypo signs.

He seems fine, not exhibiting any unusual behaviours but his eyes still aren't normal. I gave him the ear drops friday night but have now stopped them as this is the only thing that has changed.

Has anybody had any similar problems? he's going to have to go back to the vets if there's no change by tomorrow but the vet was pretty stumped as to what caused it.

I need to clean the left ear of my cat Oliver as it's got a wax buildup within days. I had used a solution from the vet, Otoclean, but have decided to just use a tiny drop of baby oil or nothing/just wet Qtip, and it's worked just fine.

If you are worried about the drops, it's good that you stopped them.
Try changing the Subject on your first post in this thread to ask for suggestions on cleaning a cat's ears from wax/dirt buildup.I am sure you will get lots of suggestions on safer alternatives.

sounds to me like he might have been low on bg.... Could you start home testing so that you could rule out low bg? some kitties will actually go up when they are at the vets office for their bg test.

I'm new at this, but I'm getting a lot of experience with asymptomatic hypos. So if you are monitoring your cat for hypos by eyeballing him/her, you could miss it? Akbah has hypoed every day for the last four days, and I only know because I tested him. The most I could notice in terms of symptoms is he gets a bit sleepy when he is REAALLY low, and he gets hungry when he's just very low. And you know, a hungry, sleepy cat? Is a bit normal.
But I don't know if your puss is hypoing. Eyeballs glazing... well. I don't know. It does sound like a symptom.

Without testing you could def miss a hypo - not all cats show symptoms. On Dec 31 I went to a friends house to teach her how to test her cat who was on a really high dose of insulin and was going to swithc to lo carb canned the next day. When I tested him at +3 he was at 36 and showing NO signs at all. After many hours and lots of high carb canned and honey he finally made it up to the 50's. If we hadn't have tested him and he got his evening dose I have no doubt that he wouldn't be here anymore. I tell you this story so you can see that even a cat that is very low can show no signs so you can't really go by looks alone..

Btw - that am shot on 12/31 was the last shot he got...he is now OTJ!!

Good Luck!!!

It could be something called "iris atrophy" - its a condition seen in older cats. The pupils stop dialating and stay stuck open. Cats can still see but they might avoid sunlight or bright conditions. If it seems like the drops caused the condition - stopping them might cause the pupils to start contracting again or may not. My cat has had Iris Atrophy along with age related cataracts for a long time (she is 19 now). She doesn't see well but she still does see enough to get around. Jan

Thanks for the tips I'm going to speak to the vet tomorrow about his dose and about home testing.

Are there any particular glucometers that people prefer or are they all about the same?

the Relion you get from walmart is very good and quite cheap to the meter is around 9.00 and the strips are 20.00 for 50 strips or 36.00 for 100 .
