Greetings, everybody,

It's been quite a while since I've posted here. My cat Eukanubo is now almost 14 years of age, was diagnosed in late 2009 and was on insulin until around March 2010, when he went into a beautiful remission. I would check his glucose readings once a month and they were always in the 80s, he did fine until last year, when he started losing a lot of weight and being very lethargic, only laying on a bench all day, to the point that I had to spoon feed him He had all kinds of tests, including X rays and an abdominal ultrasound which only revealed a tiny enlarged lymph node, too small to biopsy. His glucose was fine at the time. I switched him from Friskies Mixed Grill to Fancy Feast and slowly spoon fed him back to health, this was last March. So he had another stretch of good health, he put on his weight back, then in October, there was an issue of possible thyroid enlargement and slightly high kidney numbers, but he was ravenously hungry and eating, and I noticed his glucose readings have been creeping up. So a couple of weeks ago took him to the vet, and his glucose was even higher (like in the 400s) than what my meter said (mid 200s). So, my meter has been inaccurate for I don't know how long. I tried to switch him back to the Mixed Grill but he just ignores it, so it's back to Fancy Feast, and now he is back on insulin. It's a good thing that it's not as difficult as the first time, but neither me nor him are happy about it. His glucose readings are hovering in the 200s-300s (still with the inaccurate meter), he seems to be OK for the most part, although sometimes he looks like death warmed over, sometimes he is all perky and seems comfortable and content. After all, he is not a young cat and I know he can only live so long. As long as he is comfortable, I will keep treating him, although this insulin, strips and vet visits are getting expensive. I'm currently using the Free Style Lite meter and strips, anybody has any recommendations for something reliable, cheaper, or a way of getting these strips in bulk to bring down the price? I appreciate any input or feedback

Thanks!

Please read the info in this link on the Free Style Lite meter

Also, my Vinnie used to love the Mixed Grill and started getting sick on it and refusing to eat it. I have stopped used the Mixed Grill.......no idea what they've done to it.

I believe in the above link they mention using the ReliOn meter, many here do. Walmart carries it. Stress can raise bg quite a bit but I would suggest buying a different meter and starting again.

The Walmart ReliOn is a branded version of the Arkray USA Glucocard 01 which is available online at American Diabetes Wholesale, among others.
Purchases of $100 or more get free shipping there. (Stock up on test strips and syringes!)

The vet can be stressful MANY cats have higher BG readings at the vet than at home. Like +200 pts some times.
I use the Relion meter at home, it was cheap and it works well and is reliable.

Thanks, all,

My vet was at a conference but she had told me that I would be getting a new glucometer as there's a new model coming out, but I didn't realize it wasn't a new Free Style meter, but an Alpha Track. today I got a call that I would get a "loaner" which I just picked up, along with 50 strips, the Free Style read 370 and the Alpha Track read 509. I'm concerned about the cost of the meter as I didn't realize there would be a charge when I get the new one, I believe it costs around $100 and the strips are either $1 or $2 apiece, which can add up. I'm thinking that since his glucose readings are high anyway, I will continue giving him insulin and using the Free Style until he "normalizes", then I can switch to whatever else may be more accurate and affordable (I had just bought a new set of Free Style strips and would rather use them if I can). By using the Free Style, at least I'm sure he won't get hypoglycemia although he may be somewhat under-treated. The good news is that other than drinking lots of water, he seems comfortable and was even playing this morning, he has some good moments and sometimes he just looks tired, but not in distress, so I think he'll be OK.

Update on the update:

I got a Reli-On Confirm Meter at the local Wal-Mart, and the readings are reasonably close to the loaner Alpha-Trak meter, the difference can be 6-30 point difference, but that's much better than 100 point difference with the Free-Style. It was not easy to see that his real numbers were in the high 400s and low 500s, after 2 weeks of re-starting the insulin, it didn't seem to budge much, but for the 1-2 days, I'm starting to see a response, this morning his glucose was the best so far at 250, so I only gave 1/2 unit of his PZI. I've been trying different cat foods (low carbohydrate, of course) but he doesn't seem to be liking them too much, but at least he will eat it with some encouragement. Is it OK to try different foods in different days, or having so much variety a problem?
Thanks!

YES I've got EMPHATIC feedback. Throw that Freestyle lite thing out the window, go outside and stomp on it, go to the chemist or wherever it is that one buys diabetes meters in your hometown, and get a new meter.

See this thread: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=61090

I changed from a bleepedy bleep bleep Freestyle lite to an AccuChek Precision. But I'm in Australia. You'll find recommendations for good meters at that thread, and I have no doubt others will chime in.

Please don't give up on your cat just because you have a useless meter!!

Oh i just found all these other replies, but i'm going to post this anyway to demonstrate my feelings.
Big love to your cat.

How about a curve this weekend to give you a good picture of the "real" numbers you are getting now? It should give you some direction in terms of dose change if needed.

Thanks, I think we'll be fine. His glucose this morning was the best so far, at 250, but it's gone up towards the day, I'm OK with that. Still, I need some guidance as to how often can (or should) rotate the different foods? Reason I'm asking is that last year, he went from Friskies Mixed Grill to Fancy Feast Elegant Medley Shredded White Meat Chicken Fare, and besides the cost, I'm looking for something that he'll eat that has lower carbohydrates. I've tried a few cans of Friskies Special Diet (beef and chicken, beef and liver, today it's been 9-lives chicken supper) but I don't know whether or not it's OK to change a food so frequently. He seems to eat OK but sometimes has to be encouraged as he doesn't seem to like some of the food, so I would try a different one to make sure he eats and doesn't drop his sugar after an insulin injection. Advice?
Thanks!

The Medleys are not a complete meal but are intended to be a snack. You can feed any of the FF classics. I think it varies with the cat. Some seem to like variety; some like the same stuff day after day. We feed mostly the chicken classics. Some cats seem to have digestive problems with the beef.

Lots of people sprinkle Bonito flakes or FortiFlora or catnip on the wet food. Some cats like it best a little soupy, mixed with warm water.

The Medleys are complete. From FF wesite:
"Fancy Feast Elegant Medleys Tender Turkey Tuscany With Long Grain Rice And Garden Greens In A Savory Sauce is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for growth of kittens and maintenance of adult cats."

The FF Appetizers are not. Complete from the website:
"Feast Appetizers are intended for supplemental feeding only. This product may be fed daily along with a complete and balanced cat food diet."
