Good afternoon!
I've been busy all day so I haven't had the time to post until now.
Last evening, after giving only 0.25, he went down a little but went back to above 400 but by the morning hadn't gone up all that much higher. Of course, he did get me at 3:00 AM so like an idiot I served the food, thinking that he would just eat it and it would be fine until the new testing/shot time of 6:00 AM. But I wasn't planning that he was just nibbling for at least an hour, so getting me back into the 2 hour no-feed zone. So, I gave the usual dose of 1 unit. Stopped briefly for lunch, did a +6 check and it was a nice 155. I am now home at 3:00 PM and he is quite hungry, so he's eating, and his +9 is down to 115!?!? Even though I left food out, it is obvious he hadn't eaten all day, and I'm sure it will definitely go up, but I feel I'm in a quandry. He is getting most of his insulin in the morning, gets beautiful numbers, but I fear that if I shoot the same amount in the evening he will plunge even lower. But not dosing is not an option, as he did get up to over 400. I keep having the feeling that he will wind up getting something like 0.75 units twice a day but I'm not sure what would be the best way to get there, or if that is something I should even try as opposed to keep doing what I'm doing. Thoughts?

You can give differing amounts am and pm, but if it's because his numbers are wildly different, not a good plan. It isn't good for him to swing from the 400s to 100 and maybe below as a regular cycle. One unit was too high because it looks like your duration is too long. And if it is too high for a 400, I think it is time to reduce. You also may have a pancreas helping out as he went down. Your numbers may also be confused by his not eating during the day.

If he is not back up by +12 (over 200) I would wait till he is (and sure not food induced)and give a small dose. (maybe in the .2-.4 range.). I agree skipping isn't good.

Then see what happens tomorrow. You either want a smaller dose twice day, or shoot as he needs it, when rising into a safe number and more likely than not, longer than the 12/12 schedule.

I realize his not eating when you aren't there makes this even more complicated.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I think I need to start thinking about switching to U100 needles, where do I find the explanation on the conversions? I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high, but it seems he might be able to achieve remission. Is this possible even after a relapse?

Thanks!

It is almost PMPS time, I've been withholding food since he last ate around 3:30 PM, and he is now reading 196. He's been desperately hungry so he is eating avidly now. I think I'll check again in 1 hour, and if its in the mid 200s or above, I'll shoot 0.25. Tomorrow morning, I'll shoot 0.5 even if his reading is above 400. I'm glad his numbers have been so great but it's making me awfully nervous...

It is scary, but the way to OTJ.

You know how to handle low numbers and how to manipulate the food. If you can tell yourself, you are just data gathering? I would try to be around at nadir if you can - the more numbers, of course, the better.

The more data I have the more information I have, and it is paying off that I've managed to avoid a severe hypo if I didn't test so frequently. Having said that, I do obsess about these things and kitty's ear (I seem to only be able to draw from the left one) is starting to deny me with samples, resulting in multiple pokes and an aggravated furbaby. The good thing is, he looks mighty good when he is at good numbers (upper 100s all through the 200s), so, it's not just the numbers, but how well he is doing overall that makes me feel better. I'm a bit concerned because I have to go out of town in April for a few days, and I don't know if he'll be OTJ, by then, whether boarding will derail his recovery (from the stress), if he is not OTJ by then I wouldn't have a sitter come in to give the shots and leave him unattended the rest of the day. So here's hoping that Mr. P makes up his mind and decides to stick around for good :YMSIGH:

OK, it's recheck time, the reading has gone to only 248. Contrary to my prior statement that I didnt want to skip, I think it is better to skip tonight because he seems to be getting more and more sensitive to insulin. Tomorrow, I plan to shoot only 0.5 units even if he is 400-500 and sort of re-set the whole thing. I would rather have him have high numbers for a day or so than to risk a hypo overnight when I'm sleeping. I'll keep reporting. Thanks for your support!
