We haven't started this yet. Tomorrow is our tutorial at the vets office.

I understand during the initial weeks of treatment and for doing a curve you have to prick the ears often. Then most of you test twice a day before shots (or some of you do).

How do the ears hold up. I have this vision of them becoming sore and bruised and almost tattered.

This is the part that makes me the most nervous about the whole diabetes journey (well except for a hypo).

Welcome Karrie and Maverick,

Yes, we test our kitties just like we would our diabetic children. And they learn to anticipate a test by coming to their spot because they know a treat follows. At first the ears may bruise a little, before they toughen up. You can use neosporin (with or without pain relief) to help.

We all test before shooting no matter the years on insulin. Mishka, as an example, has been getting her right ear only tested for 7 years this month. Minimum of twice a day and no vet would be able to tell which ear I test on. They do not become tattered or damaged.
 
Next week will be five years for Tucker, right ear only being pricked and his ears are just as handsome now as they ever have been :)

You'll find after a very short time it gets pretty easy to do this, and it's so much safer for your kitty to hometest.

Yep we all test our kitties before shots, and even my Max who is at the moment diet controlled I still check him at least every other day if not everyday to make sure he is still going OTJ. Now Max has very light ears, so at first he looked pretty bruised but never once acted like they hurt him. Now two weeks into being tested on an almost daily basis you wouldn't be able to see what ear I have tested even seconds afterwards unless there was still a little dried blood on it.

Otherwise his ears don't look any different than any of my other non-diabetic kitties.

Welcome to FD. :smile: Also if you take a kleenex and hold pressure on the site that you just got the blood from it will bruise less. You can't tell on my Sara that I test her ears, and I sometimes do it more than 2x a day.

I was nervous too when I first started this journey, but practice makes perfect. Soon you will be a pro at it.

Joey's ear looks pristine. I blot off the blood with a gauze pad, and ten minutes later, no sign of any assault.
 
Thank you for everyones replies. I feel a whole lot better!

Tomorrow is the big day. I'm sure I'll be posting often in the upcoming two weeks. I'm really nervous about what to expect. Doing my best to be prepared.

Jack and I are newbies at this but we have been doing it for a month..so far so good .\he doesn't seem to mind. he had bruising from the testing down at the clinic but so far I havn't noticed any that I have done.Good luck
