Dosing question with food change

Glad he’s on track to come home soon! 4 units is generally a big starting dose but the DKA situation changes things. Assuming you’ve got the stuff to test BG at home? If they upped his dose of Lantus fast you could be in for a few days of action with the depot building and food transition. See what the others think.

Me too! I was worried last night!

It’s is Prozinc and not Lantus so if I read right that’s not a depot one! I also thought that I read that it can sometimes go into the next cycle! I do have everything to test but with just the insulin and food change and only doing three tests ever/before he was on insulin I am just a little apprehensive! I also feel like it’s high but did read about it and how DKA does make it different like you said! Still trying take things in!

Hello and welcome! That is a large dose of Pro zinc to be giving, I do understand about the DKA. Can you get some of the blood glucose information from your vet, the numbers that they have been seeing, with the four unit dose. I can’t comment very much on the dose since you don’t have a spreadsheet yet since everything is so new, but it will be very important for you to be able to monitor the BG when you bring him home. Perhaps as a temporary measure, you could get the vet to install a Libre sensor on him that you could use just temporarily while you learn how to test blood from his ear more proficiently, but I would ask the vet for the numbers that they have been getting — the pre-shot numbers and any other numbers that they get in between the two shots, how low is he going on the four unit dose?

I am usually over on the ProZinc forum helping people with their ProZinc kitties over there.

Tonight will only be his second dose! I will get the numbers since I have to go at 7 anyway! I am just nervous with the diet change and them giving 4 units! I’ve expressed my concern but they don’t seemed concerned since his numbers where in range today!

You are right to be concerned. Do you have a way to test for ketones at home (urine test strips or a blood ketone meter?) wait…. I see you have the keto mojo. That’s good!

To FF and I also left some Tiki cat! They are letting him stay another night!

They had been feeding hills w/d wet with some dry kibbles so a lot more carbs!

@Suzanne & Darcy
Yes. The transition to low carb food will result in lower numbers and less insulin requirement. I am glad he’s staying another night. At least they will watch him closely. Have they given you information on how his electrolytes are doing?

His CBC today were all within range and I can’t remember if I asked specifically about his electrolytes but will tomorrow!

His ketones were 1.3 this morning but 1.6 tonight!
