Started a new page on same day per someone's suggestion (told previously that usually only start 1/day) for dosage q's..

Hi... Switched my kitty to all wet low carb diet. Was advised to go down to 1U on the Humulin I have while waiting for Lantus to come on Sat. I gave 2U last night with the wet food change and got a # in the 80's at the 2 hour mark and got scared, so this morn gave 1U but #'s have been kinda high all day. I feel like I should do 1 1/2U tonight. I know that 2 is too much but 1 looks like not enough, and someone suggested I do a new topic to get some advise on what to do til the Lantus comes in and I can start that...Some have said stick with 1 but just tested her again and she is already up to 324 and it's only 6 hours, 6 more til next dose. She has not had a single blue or green # all day and this kind of worries me too. Of course I'm also still very new at all this too...

personally i'd stick with the 1 unit. you could end up with another late night if you don't and these numbers aren't abnormal for early in the disease. switches aren't instant so the wet food can still make for a drop in numbers.

post your evening number and see if others are around by then k

Okay now I am REALLY in love with ur website! I can read and post from my phone!!! Anyway, I will definitely post the pm BG # before I give the shot and hopefully I'll get some input...

I'll keep checking in on you tonight I should be around for awhile this evening.

Hi Stephanie,
Cindy is giving great advice, I would agree with her. Your numbers are going to be up and down for awhile, then when you start Lantus they will probably be different then to. So just hang in there, your doing great!!!!

She was really relaxed because my Hubby pet her for a good 10 minutes before I checked her BG, so I got probably a pretty accurate non stressed read of 305. Not bad for this time of night at the +10 hour. Also fed her dinner about an hour and a half ago (low card wet 9 lives)... Feeling okay with this #. will give 1U tonight. You all know best too, so I now feel comfortable. I am so grateful for you guys walking me through all this and I hope I am not too much of a worry wart for u all!

Actually that is a very good number for +10 on Humulin N since you figure that it is basically like she has no insulin at al in her system right now. So I would think 1u is a great plan for tonight.

And no hun, you are not too much of a worry wart at all. Your just a very good momma bean, and BooBoo is a lucky kitty to have such a caring human looking after her. Your love for her is very apparent in your posts. I'm looking so forward to seeing how she does once you get her on Lantus..I've got my fingers crossed that very shortly she will be joining a lot of us at the Falls ( our phrase for going into remission ).

Your doing a fantastic job. Hugs to you and scritches to BooBoo.

Just wondering when you saw that +2 drop did you whip out any high carb or anything to make her numbers high? I'll be here for a couple of hours too.

I did! I got out the Karo, rubbed a little on her gums and tried to get her to eat some or any I should say of the dry food that we have 3 bags of since I have stopped feeding the dry to all the cats now. I also tested her every half hour, and I was in tears when i saw that low #. I totally freaked! She eventually ate some of the dry and I just sat and pet her, brought the food to her and her #'s started going up. THEN, I was able to finally go to sleep. It was a long night. That's why 1U sounds perfect tonight cause at least I know she'll be safe and we can all get some good sleep...

Thanx for the kind words!!! cat_pet_icon

and now we know why she had those high numbers today. i know it's hard but you have to try not to over-react to numbers. the +2 80 was a surprise yes, but not quite time to break out the karo. perhaps just a meal? i know you are new and need time to learn. this was a lesson. i was the same way. you have all the stuff you need to gently 'steer' the numbers...medium carb, high carb, karo in that order. and your good at testing. take it easy when you see anything above 40 and calmly (ha ha) write a post and see if you can get some advice. panic is your enemy.
your doing great tho' with the order in for lantus and all the testing. good for you.

I got worried cause I was afraid if she was already at 87 at +2, then I was thinking she might go way down at +4 and THEN i was going to have a problem on my hands. I wanted to avoid that and I did send out a post and someone walked me through it. Just saw a pattern from my SS and thought that by the looks of it, something might have happened had I not done something. That's all, just trying to be preventative... :)

P.S. I cried to my Hubby in another room and tried to be calm with her... :) Oh, and Tom is quite a handsome kitty!

awww ((((steph))) it will get easier i promise. after a while you'll know just how much to do and when to do it. ahhhh, but by then you'll be on lantus... a whole nother animal. you'll learn about low #'s---oh boy you'll learn. but your kitty has such a good chance of great regulation and who knows...alot of kitties go off the juice (insulin)

Just gave BooBoo her shot. She actually came out of our bedroom where she always is, into the livingroom, as if to say, "I'm ready for my shot!". And now I could swear she's smiling. She must be feeling better!!!
:RAHCAT

steph it's crazy but it happens here all the time..the kitties come to almost enjoy the test/shoot ritual. and we bond with them and they with us in a way unlike it was before they were our sugar kitties. welcome to the sugar dance.

It's like they know that we are their key to a happy healthy life and they appreciate us for it, which in turn makes for a most fabulous loving bond to know you have such a precious life in your hands to care for and they in turn really truly get to know how much we love them and care about their well being!!!

oh, and BooBoo's fur is looking so much better than it was. It was really kind of greasy feeling and she hand ALOT of dander and is now starting to feel so soft again. She also had neuropathy setting in because we did not know anything was wrong with her for awhile, but now she is starting to walk tall again in her hind legs! What an inprovement just since Jan. 3rd!

it's the most wonderful thing is'nt it? they get better and better and we just get closer and closer with them. tomtom will let me do anything i want to him now. pill him, take his temp. i just shake the strips vial and he comes a runnin. it's adorable!

just took a look at your ss and i think you might be ok just giving 1u until the lantus arrives. did you change diet during this time since you began shooting?

Nothing but wet food since yesterday mid morning. Gave her a little dry when I thought she was low last night but all she would eat was the low carb Hills anyway (smart girl) so yeah. Wet food diet change all the way around for all 4 kitties now per the benefits I have read since joining this forum! Thanx!!!

Low carb wet food that is found on Jan and Binky's list!

BTW... I am just amazed at how spry she is tonight! She is all over the house walking around, and now she just jumped on the bed, like, "come on mama, come to bed now!" She must be feeling better!!! Makes me really happy...

well steph, i'm afraid you are going to have to get used to seeing lower healthier #'s girl. that food switch and the days you've been on insulin have now helped booboo to be better, so don't freak out when you see green...green is good. i saw no evidence to carb up any or your tests...at most just a low carb meal.
he's going green hon, and that's where you want him!
