I'm thinking we are through the bounce. I didn't know how low he would go so only gave 0.5 units after reading "what to do with low preshot numbers".

His sugar is down, but his physical ability is down too. Yesterday he spent much of the day in the litter box and fell off the high bed (not on his feet). When I went to bed last night he was lying in the doorway. He could barely move, but I noticed pee in the box. At 1 am he woke me up at the side of my bed. He could not get on the bed so I picked him up. He was hungry so I fed him through the tube. He purred. I noticed poop in the box. However, his posture alarmed me. He could not keep himself in a sitting position. I gave him his Bupo and we fell asleep together.

It is six hours later, he is resting comfortably on the bed and purrs when I go into the room. (I have pillows all around to catch him if he falls and I keep checking him).

I am concerned about his weakness. He is anemic (Tuesday his red blood cell count was 15%... very low).

On Tuesday when his sugar was in the 60s he was alert and mobile.
Thursday his sugar shot up and he became lethargic (as he usually does). He was able to get on the bed.
Friday was worse and now it is Saturday.....

He has bounced back so many times, I don't know what to think. I guess I should just be happy he is comfortable and where he wants to be.

hi wendy
i'm glad he is comfortable. what does the vet say about this weakness and not being able to sit right? i hope he gets better.

When we were at the vet Tuesday he was pretty good. He was fine until he bounced up to 317 on Wednesday night.

He has arthritis and his anemia makes him weak. We have gone through several episodes like this. I'm afraid he doesn't have much more left in him. I just gave him some mertazipine to stimulate his appetite. It usually perks him up a little.

He is having a couple of Temptations now.

Morning Wendy,

I'm sorry that Melba isn't doing better but looking over the other things that you already know are wrong with him I'm kind of out of my league to give you a lot of advice. But I'm going to see if I can round up a wonderful member of this board that did some pretty amazing things with her kitty Tucker when he had some of the same issues that your dealing with in dear sweat Melba. Specially the low potasium. Part or most of his weakness your seeing in him I suspect is related to that issue.

He has early stage renal failure. It hasn't gotten any worse in almost two years.

He was tested for erythropoietin. He is producing those hormones. He was also tested for autoimmune disease (coombs and ana tests). I wouldn't put him through a bone marrow biopsy, but there is no reason to suspect bone marrow disease. He most likely has anemia due to chronic inflammatory disease. (In his case, pancreatitis). That's why I think I if I can get his glucose under control, his chronic pancreatitis will subside.

I give him two cans of fancy feast a day. Sometimes he nibbles a little kibble, or Temptations.

For potassium he gets 1/2 tsp tumil K twice a day. His potassium levels have risen from three to four (normal) in the last month. He was low on potassium for at least six months and lost a lot of muscle, especially in his back legs.

I also give him omega 3, glucosamine, zobaline and 1/4 tsp Metamucil twice a day. (He is pooping well now.)

For pain he gets Buprenorphine. I have recently been giving him his full daily dose because he has been quite uncomfortable.

He has arthritis, too.

Maybe once a week I will give him Mertazipine for appetite.

My vet knows and approves of everything I am doing.

He's perked up a little today. He is purring and stretching.

oh that's great. keep feeling good beautiful Melba cat_pet_icon cat_pet_icon cat_pet_icon

Checking in to see how Melba's doing today. So good to hear he's feeling a bit better. I hope you're feeling a bit better too, Wendy, seeing him more comfy.

Starting to see some blues in mid cycle again. Maybe things are looking up.

Melba is still having difficulty walking, although today is better than yesterday. He didn't make it to the litter box this afternoon.

Mostly he is very tired. He walks a few steps and lies down. His gums were very pale yesterday and his foot pads were white. Today they look pink again.

He is twitching in his sleep.

I will miss him dearly.

i know you'll miss him wendy but don't you worry. when time comes for him he'll have about 8 of my babies to play with & he'll feel wonderful. it's hard on us when they move on but they have a great time at the bridge and we'll be here for you. i always said after my Cory went to the bridge that i would never have any more. well........
now i have "ELEVEN"!!!!! We can only borrow them for a little while . lucky for us that they give us the time that they can but they have so many more lives to live and they are always around, even if we can't see them.
hugs to you and your baby

hmmmm. He was in the kitchen this morning eating kibble with my other cat, Ollie. He was moving around a lot better and made it to the litter box last night. He was sitting up and watching me get ready for work. Things are looking better.

I was told the bounce would last about three days. Today is day four.

Just got to celebrate the good days especially with our babies that are getting up there in years and have a lot of health problems. I wish I could be more help with the other things you are dealing with in him but sadly I have very little experience first hand with most of it.
