Diarrhea... again.

Katie had really runny diarrhea this morning. This is before glucose test, before feeding, and before insulin. When I took her to the vet a couple weeks ago for the diarrhea, they did a fecal and didn't find anything. They did give me Forti-flora, but every time I try to take Katie off it, the diarrhea comes back. Any ideas what could be causing it?? confused_cat

I'm so sorry about Katie having diarrhea again.
What tests have they run on her?
Smokie had it real bad once and i finally found out she had eaten plastic.
Hope you find the problem and she gets ok real soon!

Could be many things. My civi Stuarthad it bad last weekend and would not even eat Monday morning. Bloodwork and urine analysis did not show anything, Started on metronitazole and subq fluids and he is fine now.

What color was it?

And can you tell us exactly what and how much katie eats?

Kind of a dark (really dark) chocolate brown, and really, really runny. But no blood, luckily. Also stinks to high Heaven. I just got home, and my grandmother said Katie had another bout of diarrhea, with some slightly formed fecal matter... in the living room! She has never gone anywhere except the litter box (with the exception of when she was first being box trained).

Katie eats Merrick Cowboy Cookout. I put down one can (5.5 oz) in the morning and one can (5.5 oz) at night, of which she and Sassy share. Sometimes they polish it off within a couple hours, and sometimes they don't eat much of it. Also, if Katie asks, I put a 3.3 oz can out about 4 AM. Aside from the treats I give her at test time, this is the only food she eats. I even stopped giving her table scraps when she was diagnosed.

I have some Metronidozol that I didn't give Katie. Should I start giving it to her again? I stopped because she hates liquid meds, but if it's necessary, I'll start again.

They ran parasitology tests, to see if she had any parasites, but she didn't. I don't know if they did any other tests on her fecal. I don't think they did, because they didn't say they had.

Katie has never shown interest in eating plastic, so I doubt that's the reason.

But I AM worried. It's not healthy for her to have frequent diarrhea, is it? I worry about her getting dehydrated. And I hesitate to take her back to the vet, because her BG numbers freaked out for several days and are just now getting better.

Help, please!!!

You can get flagyl/metronidazole in pill form. Have you tried that in a pill pocket?

Well, I've actually been reading all about kitty poo since I saw this earlier. What an "interesting" topic!
Here's what I've picked up. Keep in mind that this isn't a problem I've ever had with Bob or Mullet, and there's plenty of other people here who've had this problem with their cats. (hoping some of them can shed some light)
The "really smelly" thing would seem to indicate a possible infection in her intestines. If they checked her for parasites (worms?), they might not have also checked to see if there was an infection present.
The dark color is confusing. Really dark (almost black) can be due to blood high up in the digestive system, while seeing red (blood) can indicate bleeding further down the tract. But you don't see any blood, which is good. My book doesn't say anything about dark, but no presence of blood....
Sometimes diarrhea can be caused by overfeeding, but it doesn't sound like she's eating too much.

The big problem is that it causes dehydration, so it can't go on for too long before causing other problems.
I am not sure what metronidozal was prescribed for, or what it treats....

As far as her going in the living room..... I'd say she can't help it. It's one of those "when you gotta go, you gotta go" things. It probably freaked her out too.
I would at least call the vet tomorrow, and ask if there's a chance she's got an intestinal infection of some sort. Hopefully they can tell you something over the phone and save her the stress of a visit.

I am using the 250 mg tables cut into quarters and stuffing the quarters in a #3 gel cap. The 250 mg tablets are on the $4 human prescription list at Target and other places.
